  • Patent number: 5072386
Abstract: Each sortable key within National Language Support (NLS) data processing system is assigned an alphabetic key value, a diacritic key value, a case key value and a special character key value. The various values assigned for the alphabetic key, the diacritic key, the case key and the special character key are ordered in a culturally predictable manner such that subsequent sorts of the keys within the data processing system based upon the alphabetic key value, the diacritic key value, the case key value, and the special character key value will result in a culturally predictable order. For example, if a particular national language implementation requires the character "" to follow "Z," an appropriate selection of alphabetic key values for these characters will result in this ordering. Special situations, such as ligatures or other idiosyncratic keys, are handled by locating each instance thereof and temporarily substituting a selected replacement key therefore.

  • Patent number: 5072387
Abstract: An improved method for deteriming the transit time of a radioactive tracer for steam injection profiles in steam injection wells is disclosed. Radiation decay data is collected at two detectors at different depths. The data is then transformed into a new data set, consisting of time intervals between successive decay events. Tracer radiation decay events are distinguished from background radiation decay events by using statistical methods to establish a high probability that background radiation decay events are excluded. The total set of time intervals are then divided into subgroups of a specified sample size. The arrival time of the tracer is determined as the first time at which a specified minimum number of identified tracer radiation decay events occur successively.

  • Patent number: 5072388
Abstract: A log analysis method can be used to determine a relative condition of a lined casing within a geothermal well from logged instrument data. Uncertain conditions, such as an unknown scale layer thickness, may perturb the indicators of a casing condition within the logged signals. The method can be used to detect the perturbed signals, discern a perturbed reference interfacial indicator in the data, searches for an adjacent interfacial indicator within a window, and axially aligns the adjacent indicator by shifting the data signal towards the reference indicator. The baseline indicator may be an arbitrarily selected signal indicator or a prior (non-scaled/non-eroded) condition indicator. A prior condition indicator can also be used to determine a second window for detecting an adjacent surface signal indicators.

  • Patent number: 5070456
Abstract: A method is disclosed for place value assignment for sortable keys in a National Language Support (NLS) data processing system. Each sortable key within the data processing system is assigned an alphabetic key value, a diacritic key value, a case key value and a special character key value. After building these key values for each key within the system, a place value may be assigned to each unique character which is based upon these four values. In one embodiment of the present invention, each character or key has a fixed length place value data frame associated therewith, with selected subsets of that data frame associated with each key value. This embodiment may require selected key values to be "padded" to fully occupy the designated subset within the fixed length place value data frame; however, the increased memory requirement which this approach requires will be offset by the ease of diagnosis and manipulation which this approach permits.

  • Patent number: 5070457
Abstract: A method for determining the geometry of a fracture in a subterranean formation is provided in which the geometry is determined using net fracturing pressure. The method can be used for both fracture design and on-site or post treatment fracture analysis. The method in accordance with the present invention takes into account net pressures throughout the fracturing treatment and compensates for friction pressure in the fracture.

  • Patent number: 5068789
Abstract: A computer method of parsing a sentence into sentence parts to be described with functional indications, by means of lexicalized word units. The method includes determining, for each word unit and for each constituent, the functional word category within the constituent or a new constituent and, for each constituent, describing a step relating to closure of the constituent, and allocating a functional label to that constituent. The current constituent is then tested against rules relating to the context of the words and/or subsidiary constituents, and probability factor allocated to the sentence representation is reevaluated. Each sentence representation having a probability factor above a certain threshold value is then selected. A grammatically incorrect sentence already parsed can be corrected by selecting the grammatically incorrect constituent within that sentence and changed by reference to rules stored in the computer.

  • Patent number: 5065318
Abstract: A method of translating a sentence including a compound word formed by hyphenation by using a translating apparatus which includes a dictionary look up and morpheme analyzer for looking up each word constituting an input sentence of a source language in a dictionary and providing a morpheme array of the input sentence from information obtained by looking up the dictionary, a syntax analyzer for analyzing a syntactic structure of the morpheme array provided by the dictionary look up and morpheme analyzer with dictionary and grammatical rules, a language converter for converting the syntactic structure analyzed by the syntax analyzer into a corresponding syntactic structure of a target language, and a language generator for generating a translation in accordance with the syntactic structure of the target language received from the language converter referring to the information obtained by looking up the dictionary.

  • Patent number: 5060155
Abstract: Method for unambiguously coding multiple parsing analyses of a natural language word sequence in dependency grammar in which dependencies are defined between pairs of words, each pair consisting of a superordinate word or governor and a thereto related word or dependent. For each word in the sequence a word index is determined, representing the rank of order of said word in the sequence. All possible dependents of each word are determined as well as the relation between the word and the dependents using a parsing algorithm in combination with a grammar and a dictionary in which all words of the language are stored together with their syntactic interpretation and an interpretation index, representing the rank order of the syntactic interpretation of the word in the dictionary in order to distinguish between multiple syntactic interpretations of said word.

  • Patent number: 5046005
Abstract: A test scoring machine apparatus is used for grading and scoring test papers and printing the scores directly on each test paper. The printer includes a printer driver and a print head for printing on single sheets of paper passing through the computer printer. A cut sheet feeder is attached to the computer printer for feeding single sheets of paper from a stack of paper to the printer. A light source is attached to the printer in a position for directing light onto the surface of one test sheet being fed from the sheet feeder into the computer printer. An optical reader is attached to the computer printer adjacent to the light source for reading the reflected light being reflected off the test sheet so that marks on each test sheet being fed into the printer are read by the optical reader.
