  • Patent number: 5510965
Abstract: Fluorescent tube lights have improved reflectors and light directors or dimming devices characterized by elongated light element protection tubes sleeved over the light elements and having a reflective and/or variable opacity surface formed thereon whereby the direction and intensity of light may be varied by rotating the protection tubes with respect to the light fixture. The light element protection tubes have a variable light blocking surface formed thereon or on a flexible plastic film insert which may be sleeved within the tubes to provide for improved projection of light direction and intensity. The light blocking surface is formed by an opaque portion and opposed variable opacity portions having a dot matrix pattern. The modified light reflecting and light blocking protection tubes may be otherwise conventional protection tubes which are usable in many applications including fluorescent light fixtures at office workstations.

  • Patent number: 5510968
Abstract: A back light assembly for an automotive vehicle comprising a housing having separable housing parts forming a chamber for a light bulb. The housing parts are releasably secured together by at least one and preferably two elongated, flexible, compressible, stretchable fasteners. Each fastener extends through aligned passages in the respective housing parts. Each fastener has two enlargements, one engageable with an abutment in the passage of one housing part and the other engageable with an abutment in the passage of the other housing part to hold the housing parts together. The distance between the enlargements in the unstretched, free state condition of the fasteners, before installation, is less than the distance between the abutments, so that when installed, the fasteners are stretched and in tension. One of the enlargements of each fastener is adapted to engage the rear window of the vehicle when the back light assembly is properly mounted.

  • Patent number: 5504666
Abstract: A light bulb cooling jacket is adapted to confine a light bulb in a space through which cooling liquid, such as water, may be circulated. The light bulb cooling jacket includes an shell having a rim, the rim defining an opening in the shell. A stopper fits in the opening in the shell and seals against the rim of the shell. The stopper has an aperture in it. The aperture is adapted to receive a portion of a light bulb, which is held and sealed in place in the aperture. The means employed to hold the bulb in place is adapted to engage a generally cylindrical portion of the light bulb, such as the neck of a standard 1000 W bulb. An important characteristic of the present invention that follows from this construction is that the light bulb cooling jacket may be used with a variety of standard high intensity light bulbs. Ports are provided in the stopper for introducing and withdrawing cooling liquid from the space enclosed by the shell and the stopper.

  • Patent number: 5502626
Abstract: Fluorescent lamp energy efficiency is improved by providing geometric formations on the surface to which the phosphor coating is applied. By such geometric formations, a greater oblique surface area is available for receiving a desirably thin phosphor coating such that greater and more uniform visible light output is obtained from the device for a given energy input, i.e., greater relative to that possible with smooth surfaces receiving the phosphor coating. In the illustrated embodiment, the interior surfaces of an enclosure include V-shaped groove formations for increasing the interior surface area and establishing oblique orientation relative to approaching UV light rays. A UV light source is placed within the enclosure for excitation of a phosphor coating applied to the interior surfaces of the enclosure. The invention is particularly well adapted for use as a backlighting system in an active matrix liquid crystal display device.

  • Patent number: 5499173
Abstract: First adjustment screws for adjusting the optical axis are disposed near vent pipes of a head lamp device for a motor vehicle, and guard ribs which separate the first adjustment screws and the vent pipes from each other project from a housing. While the head lamp is being aimed, the vent pipes are prevented from being damaged or dismounted in error by a screwdriver. As a result, adjustment screws may be very short even though they are close to the vent pipes, allowing the space behind the head lamp device to be utilized effectively.
