    Abstract: Method and devices for freeing stuck pipes in wells in the absence of circulation or intensifying of inflow of fluids from a productive rock, for cleaning plugged well screens, and for improving quality of cementing of casing pipes in wells. Transverse vibrations are excited in a column of tubes in the well by axial motion of a hammer or hammers suspended inside the column of tubes on a flexible suspension support. The hammers have a maximum cross-section which is 0.90-0.98 times the inner diameter of the tubes. The hammers oscillate in a radial direction and hit the wall of tubes when the flexible suspension is pulled, thus exciting transverse vibrations in the column of tubes. The strength and repetition rate of hits can be varied depending on the speed of axial motion of the hammers, weight of a load placed under the hammers, number or shape of the hammers, spacing between the hammers, and the density or viscosity of a liquid filling the well.

    Abstract: A tool containing a solid combustible material is used to provide a pipe-cutting flame and to direct a pipe-cutting flame against a casing or tubular. The nozzles can be configured in any desired array and intensity. In the preferred embodiment, a rectangular window is burned away completely if the nozzles are sufficiently intense or the window is formed in segments if other distributions are used. The device can be anchored by a packer or anchor and can be run in the wellbore on tubing, wireline or electric line. The window can be produced in a single trip. The tool can be removed and a kick-off diverter installed adjacent the window for drilling the lateral.

    Abstract: The apparatus is a whipstock assembly for use in a wellbore to form a lateral wellbore therefrom. In one aspect, a whipstock is attached to a cutting tool by a shearable connection whereby the whipstock and cutting tool assembly may be run into the wellbore simultaneously. The shearable connection is designed to fail in compression while being able to withstand forces in tension brought about by the whipstock, accessories and extensions required to properly place the whipstock above a preset packer in the wellbore. The shearable connection means consists of two sets of shearable members, one set provides equal shear resistance in tension and in compression, another set provides shear resistance in tension, but not in compression. The resulting connection is stronger in tension than in compression and failure of the connection due to the weight of the whipstock assembly is less likely.

    Abstract: Compositions comprising a base fluid and a monoester copolymer of styrene and maleic anhydride are disclosed. The compositions can further comprise an alkyl orthophosphate ester. The base fluid can be an aqueous or organic base fluid. The monoester copolymer is at least partially soluble or dispersible in the base fluid. Preferably, the composition may further include a cross-linking agent capable of increasing the viscosity of the composition, such as aluminum isopropoxide or other metal source compounds. The composition can form a gel which is stable at a temperature of about 250° F. (121° C.) or higher. Some gels of the present invention exhibit stability up to about 300° F. (149° C.) to 350° F. (177° C.) or higher. The compositions have many applications, such as pipeline treatment, conformance, hydraulic fracturing, well completion, gravel packing, drilling fluids, process facility treatment fluids, and other well treatment applications.

    Abstract: A drive mechanism for a subterranean boring machine includes a drive motor, primary and secondary drive wheels, a drive sprocket and an idler sprocket attached to the primary and secondary drive wheels, respectively, and a chain operatively extending between the drive sprocket and the idler sprocket. The drive mechanism is movably mounted on the sled of a subterranean boring machine that rolls along a track, the drive mechanism being biased against the track by a set of springs to cause the primary and secondary drive wheels to frictionally engage the track. The drive mechanism translates the sled along the track under conditions when the sled is not driving a pipe into a subterranean location. The drive mechanism is configured to be largely self-contained to permit existing sleds to be retrofitted with the drive mechanism.

Because the reverberation characteristics of an acoustic wave depend in part on the acoustic wave shape, the first reflection from the metal disk may be used to calibrate the measurement. A method for determining a borehole fluid property is disclosed that includes (i) generating an acoustic signal within a borehole fluid, (ii) receiving reflections of the acoustic signal from the fluid, and (iii) analyzing a reverberation portion of the acoustic signal to determine the property. The analyzing of the reverberation portion may include obtaining a theoretical reverberation signal and relating the measured reverberation signal with the theoretical reverberation signal to determine the borehole fluid property.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for transferring tubular stands between a substantially horizontal position on the catwalk and a substantially vertical position at the rig floor entry. In one embodiment of the invention, this is accomplished by moving bundles of individual tubulars to the process area, where a stand make-up/break-out machine, also called a bucking machine, makes up the tubular stands. The bucking machine aligns and stabs the connections and makes up the connection to the correct torque. The tubular stand is then transferred from the bucking machine to a stand storage area or to a trolley pick-up area. When additional stands are needed by the drilling operation, a trolley is moved into position over the trolley pick-up area to retrieve the stands previously placed in the trolley pick-up area. The stands are clamped to the trolley and the trolley is moved from a substantially horizontal position to a substantially vertical position at the rig floor entry.

    Abstract: A system is provided for unloading accumulated liquids and enhancing the recovery of gas from a reservoir having diminished pressure. An annulus between a tubing string and casing is isolated by a packer and continually pressurized with a slipstream of compressed gas while the well continues to produce. A unique valve positioned in the tubing string is shuttled between a production position in which production fluids are permitted to bypass the valve to the surface and a lift position in which the bypass is blocked and an unloading port is opened to vent high pressure annulus gas to the tubing string above the valve, lifting accumulated liquids with it. Preferably, the valve is actuated to the lift position by the impact of a plunger dropped from a lubricator at the wellhead, when the pressure in the annulus has reached a predetermined threshold.

The flange can move axially along the tubing.

    Abstract: A downhole pump assembly is suspended by tubing in a well. The pump assembly has a separator attached below a progressing cavity pump with a flexible shaft to accommodate the concentric path of the shaft of the separator and the eccentric path of the rotor of the pump. Vanes on the shaft of the separator use centrifugal force to separate the heavier liquids from the lighter gases in the well fluids. The separator discharges the gas into the casing and the liquid to the pump. A motor drives both the separator and the pump. A gear reduction unit is located between the motor and the pump in order to reduce the rotational speed from the motor to the desired rotational speed of the rotor for the pump.
