  • Patent number: 4708223
Abstract: An elevator cab in which emergency lighting is concealed until it is required to be utilized. When the normal electrical power supply to the cab fails, the emergency lighting is automatically pivoted from a concealed position behind an inconspicuous wall plate to an exposed position which projects the lens of the emergency lighting fixture into the cab through the opening previously closed by the inconspicuous wall plate. In the exposed position, the emergency lighting is energized by an emergency power supply, with the emergency power supply also automatically becoming available when the normal power supply fails. In a preferred embodiment, the emergency lighting is located in the return, directly above the car station, and below the transom.

  • Patent number: 4702899
Abstract: A process for reducing the sulfur oxide content of flue gases produced by combustion of sulfur-containing coal containing cations of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals or both, in ion exchangeable form. Flue gases containing sulfur oxides are recycled to contact coal awaiting combustion. Sulfur oxides are absorbed on the coal during the contact step, which is conducted in the presence of water. Sulfur oxides react with alkali and alkaline earth metal cations, and are oxidized to form sulfate reaction products. When the treated coal is burned, these sulfate reaction products are retained in the coal ash.

  • Patent number: 4699379
Abstract: An athletic monitoring device for attachment to a portion of an athlete'body or to athletic equipment. The device measures a predetermined parameter of the motion of the device while in use and compares the measured parameter to a predetermined range. Intensity of acceleration is measured by taking the square root of the sum of the squares of acceleration data for each of the three axes of motion. This value is compared to a threshold value. If greater than the threshold value, the square root value is stored and added to a second measured intensity value. In this manner, a sum of intensity values throughout a stroke is calculated. If the sum of intensities is above or below a predetermined range, appropriate signalling will so indicate.

  • Patent number: 4689952
Abstract: A tuned exhaust manifold is provided for attachment to an engine having a plurality of exhaust ports. The manifold includes an inner and outer shell joined together to form an exhaust chamber and an inwardly-opening flange-receiving space at a split line defined by the union of the inner and outer shells. Captive tuning baffles are dropped in place and positioned in the exhaust chamber to isolate individual engine exhaust ports for engine performance tuning. Each baffle includes a flange trapped in the space between the inner and outer shells to retain the baffle in a predetermined position within the exhaust chamber. The baffles are arranged in a predetermined pattern within the exhaust manifold to define separate passgeways extending from exhaust inlet openings formed in the inner shell toward one or more exhaust openings of the manifold. Tuning is accomplished by configuring and placing the baffles to control the flow of exhaust from each engine exhaust port through the exhaust manifold.
