  • Patent number: 8928250
Abstract: A light fixture includes a driver circuit that fully defines operational characteristics for operation outside of “Nominal Operation” of the driver circuit. The driver circuit increases a target current or set point when the current of the light source (i.e., output current of the driver circuit) or the voltage of the light source (i.e., output voltage of the driver circuit) is below a minimum operating current or minimum operating voltage of the driver circuit regardless of a command current level of the driver circuit. The driver circuit implements a soft start ramp up scheme having a default rate of increase for a set point or target current. After a shutdown, the driver circuit periodically attempts to restart operation by increasing the set point or target current from zero (i.e., shutdown) at a reduced rate as compared to the default rate.

  • Patent number: 8810146
Abstract: A lighting device such as an electronic ballast or LED driver includes circuitry to detect power converter activity and act accordingly. A power factor correction (PFC) circuit includes an inductor, a power converter switch, and a PFC controller effective to provide driving signals the power converter switch to turn on and off. A power converter activity detection circuit includes a first capacitor coupled between the PFC controller and the power converter switch, a zener diode, and a second capacitor coupled between the first capacitor and ground. An output voltage for the power converter activity detection circuit as referenced from a node between the first capacitor and the second capacitor is representative of activity by the power converter switch, and is provided to a lighting device controller which may accordingly maintain operation of the lighting device where a mains power interruption is only temporary but would otherwise disable the device.

  • Patent number: 8716937
Abstract: A lighting ballast includes a filament drive reduction circuit with a first inductor coupled across a filament drive source, and a second inductor and a capacitor coupled in parallel to define an LC tank between a first end of the first inductor and the filament drive source. The inductance value of the second inductor and the capacitance value of the capacitor are selected such that the natural resonance of the LC tank is substantially equal to the normal operating frequency of the filament drive source, wherein the LC tank acts as an open circuit during normal operation and the first inductor acts to balance the pin currents of series connected lamp filaments. The first and second inductors are further substantially equal in value, wherein excess filament drive current is shunted away in accordance with a normal operating frequency.

  • Patent number: 8140270
Abstract: Disclosed are methods of identifying elements associated with a trait, such as a disease. The methods can comprise, for example, identifying the association of a relevant element (such as a genetic variant) with a relevant component phenotype (such as a disease symptom) of the trait, wherein the association of the relevant element with the relevant component phenotype identifies the relevant element as an element associated with the trait, wherein the relevant component phenotype is a component phenotype having a threshold value of severity, age of onset, specificity to the trait or disease, or a combination, wherein the relevant element is an element having a threshold value of importance of the element to homeostasis relevant to the trait, intensity of the perturbation of the element, duration of the effect of the element, or a combination. The disclosed methods are based on a model of how elements affect complex diseases.

  • Patent number: 8087309
Abstract: A hermetic sample holder for use in performing microanalysis of a sample under a controlled atmosphere environment. The sample holder comprises a sample holder body with a sample cavity to receive the sample and a cover movably mounted to the holder body between an open position to allow access to the cavity and a closed position to seal the cavity. The cover is secured in and released from the closed position at least in part by a pressure differential between the cavity and the ambient atmosphere. The cover may be biased toward the open position. The cover may be pivotally mounted about an axis that is perpendicular to a sealing surface of the cover and/or movable in a direction along the pivot axis. A valve may be provided to allow direct evacuation of the cavity to create a pressure differential. An adjustable clamp may be located in the cavity to secure the sample.
