  • Publication number: 20140288395
Abstract: A monitoring device includes a housing configured to be attached to a body of a subject. An optical emitter, optical detector, and sensor for measuring motion noise are located within the housing. Light transmissive material is in optical communication with the optical emitter and detector and is configured to deliver light from the optical emitter to one or more locations of the body of the subject and to collect light external to the housing and deliver the collected light to the detector. A signal processor is configured to receive and process signals produced by the optical detector and the motion noise sensor, and to remove noise from the signals produced by the optical detector. The signal processor may generate physiological parameters for the subject such as heart rate, blood flow, blood pressure, VO2max, heart rate variability, respiration rate, and blood gas/analyte level.

A monitoring apparatus worn by a subject includes a physiological sensor that detects physiological information from the subject, an environmental exposure sensor that detects at least one airborne analyte in a vicinity of the subject, and a processor. The processor processes signals produced by the environmental exposure sensor and calculates a volumetric concentration of the least one airborne analyte. In addition, the processor process signals produced by the at least one physiological sensor to determine a physiological response of the subject to the at least one airborne analyte. The apparatus also includes a motion sensor and the processor calculates a distance traveled by the subject via signals produced by the motion sensor and calculates a volume of air to which the subject has been exposed using the distance traveled by the subject.

  • Patent number: 8841438
Abstract: Disclosed are RNA constructs which function to activate or inactivate a biological process, e.g., may be designed for attachment to a polypeptide coding region. Such RNA constructs modulate translation of a polypeptide from the coding region in response to the presence of a target polynucleotide in an expression environment. Such RNA constructs include a weakened stem-loop structure which, when bound to the target polynucleotide, assumes stem-loop secondary structure and associates with an RNA binding protein. Association with the RNA binding protein modulates translation of the polypeptide coding region. Such RNA constructs also have three-way junction joining regions 3? and 5? of the stem-loop structure.

  • Patent number: 8843740
Abstract: A first device with a changing identity establishes a secure connection with a second device in a network by acting as its own certificate authority. The first device issues itself a self-signed root certificate that binds an identity of the first device to a long-term public key of the first device. The root certificate is digitally signed using a long-term private key, where the long-term public key and the long-term private key form a public/private key pair. The first device provides its root certificate to the second device in any trusted manner. The first device can then create a certificate for one or more short-term identities acquired by the first device and sign the newly-created certificate using the long-term private key. The first device can authenticate itself to the second device by sending the newly-created certificate to the second device.

  • Patent number: 8839548
Abstract: An ice fishing device enclosed in a housing and configured for indicating that a fish has taken the bait is disclosed. The device provides a curved rod having a portion external to the housing and a portion internal to the housing. The portion inside the housing includes a curved end adapted for resting on a handle tip of the fishing spool. The curved end will release from the handle tip when a fish tugs on the fishing line, thereby moving the spool and the handle tip away from the curved end. Once the curved end is released, the curved rod containing a flag repositions to an upright position, alerting the fisherman that the fish is ready to be pulled out of the ice.
