  • Publication number: 20130250851
Abstract: A mobile device transmits to a server a request for information regarding access points in a wireless network. In response to the request, the mobile device receives encoded access point identifiers for a plurality of access points. The encoded access point identifiers include a reference identifier that has a number of groups of bits. The encoded access point identifiers also include encoding masks for respective access point identifiers, wherein a respective encoding mask identifies groups of bits for the respective access point identifier that are identical to corresponding groups of bits for the reference identifier. The encoded access point identifiers further include, for the respective access point identifiers, groups of bits that are not identical to the corresponding groups of bits for the reference identifier. The mobile device decodes at least some of the encoded access point identifiers.

  • Publication number: 20130188626
Abstract: A WLAN positioning system for calculating the geographic location of a mobile device minimizes the amount of data retrieved from a remote access point location server by dynamically switching between public fetching operations and private fetching operations in response to one or more parameters including, for example, whether the mobile device is in motion, the data retrieval history of the mobile device, and/or the capacity and utilization of local memory provided within the mobile device.

  • Publication number: 20130054181
Abstract: A method and apparatus are described for sensor based detection of pedestrian motion. Based on a 3-axis accelerometer, the apparatus may differentiate between walking, running, standing still, or any random movement that the user may perform. The method may comprise the steps of performing a time domain analysis and a frequency domain analysis. The time domain analysis may be based on a Teager-Kaiser Energy Operator. The frequency domain analysis may be based on a fast Fourier transform. A apparatus for detecting pedestrian motion may comprises an accelerometer, an operator, a Teager-Kaiser Energy Operator, a first peak detection, a second peak detection, a buffer, a fast Fourier transform, a memory and a look-up table. The apparatus may be a hand held device.

  • Patent number: 7944395
Abstract: A method and apparatus for qualifying a Satellite Positioning System (SPS) location determination. A method in accordance with the present invention comprises determining a constellation of satellites used in the location determination, making a measurement set based on signals received from the constellation of satellites, comparing the measurement set and the constellation of satellites used in the location determination to a predetermined threshold, and reporting the location determination only when the threshold is not exceeded. Such a method further optionally includes the threshold being user-selectable, the threshold being adjusted or disabled based on a pre-defined scheme, the threshold being adjusted in a sequential form based on a pre-defined scheme, and the measurement set being made in a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver.
