  • Publication number: 20160249217
Abstract: Methods and apparatus that provide user access control within wireless networks such as those having both fixed and portable nodes. In one embodiment, the network comprises a 3G cellular network or Interworking WLAN (iWLAN), and the portable nodes comprise Home Node B (HNB) base stations. The HNB is configured to authenticate new users, and provide network access while still maintaining user privacy. The portable nodes also may operate in a number of different operating modes which provide different functional control over user access. In one variant, an easy-to-use owner-assigned ID based access control mechanism with a reliable unambiguous user ID is utilized. Methods for providing access control across differing network architectures and protocols, such the aforementioned iWLAN, and business methods, are also described.

  • Publication number: 20160234702
Abstract: Embodiments of a UE and methods for D2D communication are generally described herein. The UE may transmit, as part of an in-network communication session, a D2D discovery status message. The D2D discovery status message may indicate an initiation or termination of a D2D discovery operation at the UE and may indicate if the UE is announcing or monitoring part of the D2D discovery operation. The D2D discovery operation may be at least partly for configuring a D2D communication session between the UE and one or more other UEs. The UE may transmit, as part of the D2D discovery operation, a D2D discovery signal for reception at one or more other UEs. The UE may transmit and receive D2D packets over a direct link to a second UE as part of the D2D communication session.

  • Publication number: 20160157095
Abstract: Embodiments have a master eNB with a control plane and optional data plane to user equipment and a secondary eNB with a data plane to the user equipment. The user equipment thus uses both the master eNB and the secondary eNB for data communications while receiving control information from only the master eNB. The master eNB and secondary eNB are connected with an X2 interface. When the secondary eNB desires to refresh its security key, it informs the master eNB using the X2 interface. The master eNB then uses its control plane with the user equipment to initiate a security key refresh for the secondary eNB.

  • Patent number: 9326173
Abstract: Methods and apparatus enabling a wireless network to provide differentiated services to a machine-to-machine (M2M) client. In one embodiment, the wireless network comprises a UMTS network, and the Home Location Register (HLR) entity identifies subscriptions as machine-to-machine (M2M) enabled devices based on flags or other descriptors associated with each M2M device, and imposes one or more rule sets (e.g., service restrictions) based on this identification. The classification of M2M devices within the HLR may optionally include additional capability or profile data for the M2M device (e.g. static, low mobility, low data activity, etc.). Various other network entities may use the M2M identification to modify the delivered data service, so as to optimize network resources. Furthermore, monitoring of M2M client behavior can be used to detect and notify the network operator of abnormal, fraudulent, or malicious activity. Business methods utilizing the aforementioned methods and apparatus are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 9288756
Abstract: A method and system for establishing a secure device-to-device connection between two mobile devices involves the use of a WiFi Direct (LTE Direct or other similar protocols) link paired with an IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS) link. A device detects the presence of another device that it wishes to connect to. The devices negotiate a group owner, then authenticate each other using a variety of techniques, such as a centrally issued certificate. Thereafter, the devices derive keys to be used for communication, both over the WiFi Direct link and via the IMS link. A WiFi Direct Link may be paired with a Push to Talk over Cellular (PoC) link in order to couple together more than two devices. In such a connection, devices transmit to a group owner, which then sends multicast versions to the rest of the group devices.

  • Publication number: 20160057631
Abstract: Methods and apparatus that enable and optimize the simultaneous operation of several wireless femtocells having overlapping coverage areas. In one embodiment of the invention, a resource allocation (e.g., time-frequency grid for an OFDM or TDMA based wireless network) governs the simultaneous operation of several femtocells with overlapping coverage areas by specifying uses for resources. A resource allocation unit (RAU) entity is disclosed for managing and modifying resource allocations for femtocells. The community of femtocells can flexibly share resources according to the time-frequency grid, thereby maximizing spectral efficiency without requiring substantial network overhead.

  • Publication number: 20160044006
Abstract: In embodiments, apparatuses, methods, and storage media may be described for secure broadcast of discovery information of a discoverable user equipment (UE) in a device-to-device (D2D) network. Specifically, the discovery information may be encrypted with a first encryption key, and then the result of that encryption may be re-encrypted with a second encryption key. The dual-encrypted discovery information may then be broadcast in a cell. Upon reception of the dual-encrypted discovery information, a discovering UE with the appropriate decryption keys may decrypt the message to identify the discovery information. Based on the decrypted discovery information, the discovering UE may identify the presence of the discoverable UE.
