  • Publication number: 20100178953
Abstract: A mobile communication terminal comprising: a memory for storing user data that is definable when the terminal is in use; a communication transceiver; and a communication controller arranged to identify that a communication link having the terminal as one endpoint and having another communication terminal as the other endpoint is available to the communication transceiver and in response to that determination automatically: requesting data from the other communication terminal; comparing data received in response to that request with corresponding data, if any, contained in the user data; and determining in dependence on that comparison whether to update the user data; and if that determination is positive updating the user data.

  • Patent number: 7748462
Abstract: An actuating mechanism for use in a tool such as a plug used in oil and gas wells. The mechanism being operable under pressure in the well bore to set the plug in a first natural closed state for a pressure under a predetermined pressure range; a second closed state wherein the plug is locked closed regardless of the pressure; and a third open state by increasing the pressure to the predetermined pressure range and holding the pressure in the range for a predetermined time. Electronic and mechanical, dual piston, actuating mechanisms are described as is a method of controlling fluid flow in a well bore using the plug and performing a pressure test against the plug.

  • Publication number: 20100161833
Abstract: An apparatus comprising at least one processor and at least one memory including computer program code. The at least one memory and the computer program code configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus at least to detect a first user input corresponding to a first command, begin a first process corresponding to a second command in response to said first user input, detect a second user input corresponding to the second command and complete said first process in response to said second user input.

  • Publication number: 20100071896
Abstract: A downhole apparatus adapted to be run on a workstring in a well bore. The apparatus has a body including ports and a valve which is rotatable to open and close the ports to selectively allow fluid flow through the body between regions of a well bore above and below the apparatus. The valve is rotated via a gearbox and motor in the apparatus. A sealing arrangement between the valve and body is also described. A method of running the apparatus in a well bore and monitoring pressure above the apparatus in order to control opening and closing of the valve under predetermined conditions is presented.

  • Publication number: 20060067604
Abstract: A method and apparatus for optimizing a non-ideal, real mode converter to substantially achieve the performance of an ideal mode converter. The method consists of optimizing the input linear polarization to the mode converter to balance the power in the principal modes of the mode converter at the output of the mode converter. This has the effect of maximizing the orthogonality of the output polarization states of the mode converter. The present invention also provides an electro-optical mode converter with means to adjust the orientation of the input polarization state to substantially balance the power in the principal modes at the output of the converter. In the case of an intensity modulator, the output polarization state can also be adjusted to maximize mode conversion and extinction ratio.
