  • Patent number: 8446265
Abstract: The present invention provides a system which integrates motor vehicle component operation into actuators located in the rim of a motor vehicle steering wheel. The two actuators of the system of the present invention are located in an arc segment of the steering wheel defined by the three o'clock and 12 o'clock positions for the right-hand actuator and the nine o'clock and 12 o'clock positions for the left-hand actuator. The actuators may operate in parallel with a conventional stalk switch or controls associated with an on board computer and only operate a motor vehicle component when activated and subsequently depressed. The integrated vehicle control system and apparatus of the present invention further provides for vehicle component operation which does not require a driver to remove his or her hands from the steering wheel.

  • Patent number: 8321218
Abstract: A computerized method of detecting a target word in a speech signal. A speech recognition engine and a previously constructed phoneme model is provided. The speech signal is input into the speech recognition engine. Based on the phoneme model, the input speech signal is indexed. A time-ordered list is stored representing n-best phoneme candidates of the input speech signal and phonemes of the input speech signal in multiple phoneme frames. The target word is transcribed into a transcription of target phonemes. The time-ordered list of n-best phoneme candidates is searched for a locus of said target phonemes. While searching, scoring is based on the ranking of the phoneme candidates among the n-best phoneme candidates and based on the number of the target phonemes found. A composite score of the probability of an occurrence of the target word is produced. When the composite score is higher than a threshold, start and finish times are output which bound the locus.

  • Patent number: 8198996
Abstract: The present provides a system which integrates motor vehicle turn signal operation into actuators located in the rim of a motor vehicle steering wheel. The actuators of the system of the present invention, one for controlling the right-hand turn signal and one for controlling the left-hand turn signal, are located in an arc segment of the steering wheel defined by the three o'clock and 12 o'clock positions for the right-hand actuator and the nine o'clock and 12 o'clock positions for the left-hand actuator. The actuators may operate in parallel with a conventional stalk switch and only turn on the respective turn signal lights when activated and subsequently depressed. The turn signal lights turn off when the actuators are released. The integrated turn signal system of the present invention further provides for turn signal operation which does not require a driver to remove his or her hands from the steering wheel.

  • Publication number: 20120016339
Abstract: The apparatus provides for injecting therapeutic agents at precise locations into the bodily tissue. The apparatus comprises an end effector that is guided to a precise location by motion controllers on a handle. At a precise location, the end effector attaches via a vacuum to the cardiac tissue. A flexible needle is advanced through a deflecting tunnel in the end effector to a desired depth. A therapeutic agent is then introduced via the flexible needle into the cardiac tissue. All these manipulations can be controlled by one hand and can be viewed via imaging methods.

  • Publication number: 20100305948
Abstract: A sub-phoneme model given acoustic data which corresponds to a phoneme. The acoustic data is generated by sampling an analog speech signal producing a sampled speech signal. The sampled speech signal is windowed and transformed into the frequency domain producing Mel frequency cepstral coefficients of the phoneme. The sub-phoneme model is used in a speech recognition system. The acoustic data of the phoneme is divided into either two or three sub-phonemes. A parameterized model of the sub-phonemes is built, where the model includes Gaussian parameters based on Gaussian mixtures and a length dependency according to a Poisson distribution. A probability score is calculated while adjusting the length dependency of the Poisson distribution. The probability score is a likelihood that the parameterized model represents the phoneme. The phoneme is subsequently recognized using the parameterized model.

  • Publication number: 20090216535
Abstract: A computerized method for speech recognition in a computer system. Reference word segments are stored in memory. The reference word segments when concatenated form spoken words in a language. Each of the reference word segments is a combination of at least two phonemes, including a vowel sound in the language. A temporal speech signal is input and digitized to produced a digitized temporal speech signal The digitized temporal speech signal is transformed piecewise into the frequency domain to produce a time and frequency dependent transform function. The energy spectral density of the temporal speech signal is proportional to the absolute value squared of the transform function. The energy spectral density is cut into input time segments of the energy spectral density. Each of the input time segments includes at least two phonemes including at least one vowel sound of the temporal speech signal.

  • Publication number: 20070219354
Abstract: Provided are methods of identifying inhibitors of ?-secretase that employ modified ?-secretase substrates. The modified ?-secretase substrates have ?-secretase cleavage sites that are altered from wild type. The amino acid sequences of the altered ?-secretase cleavage sites contain different amino acids in at least one of the positions P2-P1-P1?-P2? of the ?-secretase cleavage site. Many of the modified ?-secretase substrates are more efficient substrates for ?-secretase than are corresponding substrates having wild-type sequences, that is, these modified substrates are more susceptible to enzymatic breakdown by ?-secretase. Recombinant polynucleotide molecules encoding the modified ?-secretase substrates are provided. Antibodies that recognize cleavage products of the modified ?-secretase substrates are provided. Stable cell lines expressing the modified ?-secretase substrates are provided. Transgenic animals expressing the modified ?-secretase substrates are provided.

  • Publication number: 20060270841
Abstract: The present invention provides DNA constructs, genetically engineered host cells, and methods for identifying inhibitors of amyloid precursor protein (APP) processing. The methods provide for the convenient identification, in a single assay, of inhibitors of ?-secretase and ?-secretase as well as other forms of APP processing. The methods rely on fusion proteins of APP and transcription factors in which APP processing releases the transcription factors, allowing the transcription factors to activate transcription of a reporter gene. Inhibitors are identified as substances that block or diminish transcription factor release from the fusion protein, thereby causing a diminution of reporter gene readout.

  • Publication number: 20050154434
Abstract: A treatment device is provided for applying electrical energy to biological tissue in conjunction with injecting a composition that advantageously diffuses through the tissue. An injector such as a syringe has a reservoir for the treatment composition and injection cannula. The cannula can function as an electrode, and one or more additional electrodes are provided as opposed electrodes. The electrodes can each have tissue penetrating needles, or one or more of the electrodes can have a surface bearing conductive contact part. The syringe or other injector and a drive unit that applies electrical power to the electrodes are operable simultaneously or in a sequence, and can be triggered by switches or automatically upon detection of the injection proceeding to a predetermined state. The treatment device preferably uses a disposable syringe received in a carrier and generally is provided with a non-threatening appearance by minimizing tissue penetration and potential high voltage aspects.
