  • Patent number: 10774725
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for reducing temperature of an engine or single cylinder(s) of the engine at start/stop events where the engine is stopped from combusting air and fuel, and in response to an overheating engine condition. In one example, a method comprises activating an electric air compressor to direct cooling air flow through a first single cylinder of the engine, to reduce a temperature of the first single cylinder to a desired temperature prior to a request to restart the engine. In this way, a single cylinder indicated to be overheating may be effectively cooled, without employing methodology that would otherwise cool the engine as a whole, which may thus prevent engine degradation and which may conserve power of an onboard energy storage device.

  • Publication number: 20200276969
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for diagnostics of an exhaust tuning valve during vehicle-off conditions. In one example, the engine may be reverse rotated, unfueled while the position of the exhaust is varied and an intake air flow is estimated at each position of the exhaust tuning valve. The exhaust tuning valve may be diagnosed based on a change in air flow with the variation in the position of the exhaust tuning valve.

  • Publication number: 20200273262
Abstract: A first controller receives a diagnostic recommendation from a cloud server. A second controller, in communication with the first controller over a vehicle bus, responsive to occurrence of a vehicle condition triggering execution of an on-board diagnostic (OBD) monitor, suspends the execution of the OBD monitor while the vehicle is within a region specified by the diagnostic recommendation. Locations in diagnostic result data are correlated to identify clusters of locations that include at least a predetermined number of executions of an on-board diagnostic (OBD) monitor. Responsive to a predicted probability of success of execution of the OBD monitor for one of the clusters of locations computed using the diagnostic result data being below an enablement threshold, a message is sent to a vehicle suspending further executions of the OBD monitor at the location.

  • Patent number: 10753294
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for reducing carbon buildup in an exhaust gas recirculation system of an engine of a vehicle. In one example, a method comprises injecting a diesel exhaust fluid into an intake manifold of the engine, routing the diesel exhaust fluid into the exhaust gas recirculation system, and vaporizing the diesel exhaust fluid in the exhaust gas recirculation system. In this way, any carbon deposits associated with an exhaust gas recirculation valve and/or exhaust gas recirculation passage may be reduced, which may increase fuel economy and may reduce undesired emissions.

  • Publication number: 20200262556
Abstract: A drone control method is provided. The method may be responsive to drone recharge energy cost being greater than a predefined threshold and include commanding a processor of the drone to execute actions that preclude the drone from recharging. The method may also be responsive to drone charge level falling below a charge threshold selected only while the drone recharge energy cost exceeds the predefined threshold and include commanding the processor to execute actions to recharge the drone.

  • Patent number: 10746135
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for taking mitigating action where a canister purge valve configured to control an amount of fuel vapors inducted into the engine during purging operations of a fuel vapor storage canister, is indicated as being degraded. In one example, a method comprises controlling an amount of pressure directed to a fuel tank and the fuel vapor storage canister via a pump positioned downstream of the fuel tank and canister to actively route fuel vapors to the canister during a refueling event. In this way, fuel vapors may be prevented from being routed to engine intake under conditions of a degraded canister purge valve, which may reduce opportunity for vehicle stall, improve driveability, and which may reduce release of undesired evaporative emissions to atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 10746093
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for indicating whether a wastegate positioned in a vehicle exhaust system is stuck in a closed or open configuration. In one example, a method comprises activating an electric air compressor positioned in an intake of the engine and obtaining a first baseline air flow and a second baseline air flow in the exhaust system, and in response to an indication that the wastegate is potentially stuck open or closed, obtaining a test air flow measurement via activating the electric air compressor and comparing the test air flow in the exhaust system to the first and/or the second baseline air flow. In this way, the wastegate may be diagnosed under conditions of limited engine operation, such as that which may occur in hybrid electric vehicles.

  • Publication number: 20200232870
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for expediting the generation of positive pressure and vacuum during corresponding phases of a fuel system leak test. Adjustments to the settings of active grille shutters and air dams enables heat to be trapped in the vehicle for the pressure phase and a cooling air flow to be provided during a vacuum phase. The adjustments enable the response time and completion frequency of an EONV test to be improved.

  • Patent number: 10718282
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for cleaning a fuel vapor storage canister positioned in an evaporative emissions control system of a vehicle. In one example, a method comprises sealing a fuel system of the vehicle for descending an altitude change that is predicted in advance, and subsequent to the vehicle descending the altitude change, unsealing the fuel system to passively purge fuel vapors stored in the fuel vapor storage canister to a fuel tank of the vehicle. In this way, bleed through emissions from the fuel vapor storage canister may be reduced, and engine operation may be improved.

  • Patent number: 10704433
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for preemptively heating engine oil prior to an engine start using an inductive heating mat. In one example, a method may include coupling a magnetic field between a primary coil housed in the inductive heating mat and a ferrous oil pan to inductively heat engine oil contained in the oil pan. While maintaining engine oil temperature above a threshold temperature, heated engine oil may then be circulated through engine components to warm up the engine prior to engine start.
