  • Publication number: 20170171176
Abstract: A set of maintenance-related actions for a computing device is determined. The actions are performed to diagnose, repair, and/or maintain the computing device. The actions can be determined by automatically determining the actions based on diagnostic and/or predictive data regarding the computing device, and/or by permitting an administrator to specify the actions. A maintenance credential for the computing device, such as a digital key, is created, and the set of actions is associated with the maintenance credential. Access to the computing device via the maintenance credential results in just the set of actions being performable at the computing device. The maintenance action can be securely provided to maintenance personnel when the computing device requires repair and/or maintenance, so that the device can be diagnosed, repaired and/or maintained without compromising security of the computing device.

  • Publication number: 20170168540
Abstract: A method includes obtaining component utilization data for multiple components of a compute node during at least one previous execution of a workload. The method further includes using the component utilization data to identify a first component having a utilization level that is less than a threshold utilization level during the at least one previous execution of the workload, wherein the first component is one of the multiple components of the compute node. The method still further includes, during a subsequent execution of the workload on the compute node, throttling the first component to prevent the first component from exceeding the threshold utilization level.

  • Publication number: 20170171021
Abstract: A method includes detecting that a new server has connected to an existing peer-to-peer network including a plurality of servers, forming a multicast group of servers that includes the new server and at least a first server from among the plurality of servers, downloading an operating system kernel to the new server from one or more of the plurality of servers, obtaining a hardware configuration of the new server, assigning a role to the new server based on the hardware configuration of the new server, and identifying an operating system image to be installed on the new server based on the assigned role. Preferably, the new server will then download and install the identified operating system image and joint the peer-to-peer network in the assigned role. One of the servers is able assign the role to the new server using predetermined deployment policies that are accessible to the servers.

  • Publication number: 20170109175
Abstract: A method includes identifying a subset of components of a node that should be loaded during the next boot of the node, storing a list of the identified subset of components in a file outside of a basic input output system, and initiating boot of the node. The method further comprises the basic input output system accessing the file and controlling boot of the node to load only the identified subset of components of the node. Another method stores a plurality of such files, wherein each file is associated with maintenance of a target component of the node. After selecting one of the files, the basic input output system may access the selected file and control boot of the node to load only the subset of components that the selected file indicates should be loaded for purposes of a maintaining or testing the target component.

  • Patent number: 8612793
Abstract: A method for dynamic power and performance calibration of a data processing system is provided in the illustrative embodiments. A synthesized program loaded in the data processing system is executed responsive to detecting an event in the data processing system. The synthesized program is configured to generate a set of data that is indicative of the data processing system's power-performance characteristics under varying conditions of operation. Using the set of data, a determination is made of a performance limit on an operation of the data processing system under present operating conditions of the data processing system. A parameter of the data processing system is calibrated to operate the data processing system within the performance limit.

  • Patent number: 8458499
Abstract: One embodiment provides a method of managing power in a computer system. A device of the computer system is operated at a selected power-state. The power consumption of the computer system is monitored. If the power consumption of the computer system is approaching or has exceeded a power cap selected for the computer system, then a request to reduce the power-state for the device is generated in response. The operating system is used to service the request to reduce the power-state according to the priority of the request. The reduced power state is forced out-of-band following the request to reduce the power-state if the request is not immediately serviceable by the operating system. Different approaches can be taken to force the reduced power state, using, for example, system management mode or a platform environment control interface.

  • Patent number: 8276038
Abstract: A data storage system includes an encoder subsystem comprising an error correction code encoder, a modulation encoder, and a precoder, and a decoder subsystem similarly comprising a detector, an inverse precoder, a channel decoder, and an error correction code decoder. The error correction encoder applies an error correction code to the incoming user bit stream, and the modulation encoder applies so-called modulation or constrained coding to the error correction coded bit stream. The precoder applies so-called preceding to the modulation encoded bit stream. However, this preceding is applied to selected portions of the bit stream only. There can also be a permutation step where the bit sequence is permuted after the modulation encoder before preceding is applied by the precoder. The decoder subsystem operates in the inverse manner.

  • Patent number: 8032814
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for controlling writing and reading of data in an array of A storage fields of a probe-based data storage device in which data is written to and read from the array of storage fields by a corresponding array of probes. One method provides error-tolerance by exploiting the inherent parallelism of the probe storage array. A user data block to be written to the A-field array is first coded to produce a plurality of C-byte codewords, such that r·C=k1A where r is the number of codewords and k1 is an integer greater than or equal to 1. A sub-blocks of k1 bytes are produced from the codewords by selecting successive bytes of each sub-block cyclically from the r codewords. The A sub-blocks are then written via respective probes to the corresponding storage fields of the storage field array.

  • Patent number: 8028183
Abstract: Disclosed is a computer implemented method, computer program product, and apparatus for determining a safe lower bound for a commonly powered data processing system. A power management module operates the data processing system using at least one nominal operating parameter during an exploration periodicity, with the at least one nominal operating parameter being clock speed. The power management module determines whether a calibration period is occurring. The power management module calibrates the data processing system up to a measurement interval duration expiration. The power management module may repeat operating the data processing system using the at least one nominal operating parameter.
