    Abstract: An electric vehicle drive system includes an electric motor, first and second planetary gear sets, including sun gear, carrier and ring gear members, first and second output shafts, and a housing. The members of the first planetary gear set are connected with the electric motor, the first output shaft, and a member of the second planetary gear set. The members of the second planetary gear set are connected with the first planetary gear set, the housing, and the second output shaft. The first planetary gear set provides differential reduction and the second planetary gear set provides reversal and reduction. Optional clutches can provide the function of a limited slip differential and distribute torque preferentially to one output shaft or the other.

    Abstract: An electric machine produces motor torque having continuously variable magnetic and reluctance torque components. The electric machine includes stator and rotor assemblies. Different ends of the rotor hub have different average magnetic field strengths, with the second field strength at one end being weaker than the other. The rotor hub translates along the rotor shaft to vary the magnetic and reluctance torque components at different speed and torque operating points of the electric machine. A vehicle includes the machine, a transmission, a load, and a controller executing a method for controlling the axial position of the rotor hub. The method may include determining the speed and a torque of the electric machine, determining a corresponding desired axial position of a rotor hub, and translating the rotor hub to the desired axial position.

Presented is a multi-speed power transmission for a motor vehicle with an engine, two electric motors, and a final drive. The transmission includes an input member connectable to the engine, an output member connectable to the final drive, and a stationary member connectable to a gear train. First and second torque-transmitting devices (TTD) respectively connect to the first and second motors. The transmission also includes a compound planetary gear arrangement with four junction points defined by two interconnected planetary gear sets. The first TTD selectively connects the first motor to the first junction point, while the second TTD selectively connects the second motor to the fourth junction point via the gear train. The input member connects at the second junction point, whereas the output member connects at the third junction point.

A continuously variable unit is connected directly to the second member and the third member. The output from the fixed gear unit may be connected to drive wheels separate from the continuously variable unit.

Current from at least one of the first and second energy storage devices is delivered to the motor-generator when at least one of the first switching device is in a first closed state and the second switching device is in a second closed state such that the motor-generator transfers torque to the starter mechanism and the starter mechanism uses the torque to start the engine.

The first assembly configuration is when the starter mechanism is coupleable to the adapter to selectively transfer torque from the motor-generator through the adapter and the starter mechanism to start the engine. The second assembly configuration is when the starter mechanism is spaced from the adapter to operate independently of the motor-generator such that the starter mechanism selectively transfers torque to start the engine.
