  • Patent number: 9005076
Abstract: A method for operating a powertrain system includes executing a transmission shift between an initial electrically-variable transmission (EVT) range and a target EVT range. The transmission shift includes transitioning to operating with three speed degrees of freedom including controlling speed of a second torque machine to synchronize speed of an oncoming clutch associated with the target EVT range and coincidentally controlling speeds of a first torque machine and an engine to achieve a preferred speed of the output member of the transmission. The transmission shift further includes controlling torque output from the first torque machine in response to an output torque request, and activating the oncoming clutch upon synchronizing the speed of the oncoming clutch. Subsequent to the transmission shift, the powertrain system is operated in the target EVT range.

  • Publication number: 20150035470
Abstract: An electric power assembly for a vehicle is disclosed. An electric motor includes a stator and a rotor being rotatable about a pivot axis relative to the stator. An inverter is coupled to the electric motor and includes a power switching device that outputs an electrical signal from the inverter at a first frequency and having interference at a second frequency. The second frequency is a byproduct of the electrical signal creating the first frequency. The stator is electrically connected to the inverter to receive the first frequency such that the stator produces a first magnetic field. A frequency filter is attached to the rotor and directs the portion of the electrical signal having the second frequency to the rotor such that the rotor produces a second magnetic field that interacts with the first magnetic field to rotate the rotor about the pivot axis relative to the stator.

  • Patent number: 8944950
Abstract: An electric drive unit (EDU) is configured for driving a first and second wheel of a vehicle. The EDU includes a rotor, a stator, a first planetary gear set, a second planetary gear set, and a pair of engagement mechanisms. The first planetary gear set is operatively connected to the rotor and rotates about the drive axis in response to rotation of the rotor to transmit torque to the first wheel. The second planetary gear set is operatively connected to the rotor and rotates about the drive axis in response to rotation of the rotor to transmit torque to the second wheel. Rotation of the rotor causes each of the planetary gear sets to rotate about the drive axis. Each engagement mechanism is selectively engages a respective one of the planetary gear sets to vary the torque transmitted to the respective wheel.

  • Publication number: 20150014115
Abstract: A torque transmitting mechanism includes a drum attached to one of a first member and a second member, and a shell attached to another of the first member and the second member. The drum and the shell are concentrically disposed about a longitudinal axis, with the shell concentrically disposed about the drum. An electric motor includes a stator, and a first rotor rotatable about the longitudinal axis relative to the stator. A band is coupled to the shell, wrapped around the drum between four and twelve complete revolutions, and includes a first end attached to the first rotor for rotation with the first rotor. The band includes a second end attached to a reaction member. Rotation of the first rotor tightens the band against the drum to bias the drum against the shell, to transmit torque between the first member and the second member.

  • Patent number: 8914180
Abstract: A hybrid powertrain has an engine, a starter motor, and a gear train that connects the starter motor with the engine, and a motor/generator. A belt drive train connects the motor/generator with the engine. The powertrain has a first energy storage device with a first operating range of voltage and a second energy storage device with a second operating range of voltage at least partially in common with the first operating range of voltage. A controller places a switching device in an on-state so that the first energy storage device is connected with the second energy storage device or in an off-state in which the first energy storage device is disconnected from the second energy storage device. The controller causes the switching device to be in the off-state and the starter motor and the motor/generator to be powered with energy from the first energy storage device to restart the engine.

  • Patent number: 8854170
Abstract: An energy conversion system includes a first core section, a tank, a flexible structure, and an output coil. The tank contains a volume of fluid having a high magnetic permeability. The flexible structure is fluidly coupled to the tank and movable from a retracted to an extended position in response to the injection of the fluid from the tank. The output coil is in electrical communication with the first core section. A charging station includes a second core section and an input coil. The first and second core sections are in alignment to define an air gap therebetween. The air gap is reduced when the flexible structure is in the extended position within the air gap such that the flexible structure transmits magnetic flux between the second core section and the first core section. The magnetic flux in the first core section induces electrical current in the output coil.
