Patent number: 8720275Abstract: An approach for detecting rotor anomalies is disclosed. An on-site monitoring unit monitors vibration measurements obtained from a rotor during a transient speed operation. In one aspect, the on-site monitoring unit classifies the vibration measurements into predetermined ranges of rotor speed during the transient speed operation, determines maximum vibration data for each of the predetermined ranges of rotor speed during the transient speed operation and compiles the maximum vibration data into a snapshot of the vibration measurements obtained during the transient speed operation. A remote monitoring unit detects a rotor anomaly from the snapshot of vibration measurements generated by the on-site monitoring unit.Type: GrantFiled: January 4, 2012Date of Patent: May 13, 2014Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Sanjeev Shyam Heda, Robert Joseph Iasillo, Eric Thomas Pool, Nirmal Sahadevan, Scott Alan Wood

Patent number: 8665104Abstract: Systems and methods for protecting rotating machines are provided. Measurements data collected by a plurality of sensors may be received by a controller that includes one or more computers. The plurality of sensors may be configured to monitor vibrations associated with the rotating machine. Based at least in part upon the measurements data, the controller may determine that a respective amplitude change for at least two of the plurality of sensors exceeds a threshold condition. The controller may also determine that the threshold condition is exceeded for a predetermined period of time. Based at least in part upon determining that the threshold condition is exceeded for a predetermined period of time, the controller may identify an alarm event.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 2011Date of Patent: March 4, 2014Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Sanjeev Shyam Heda, Scott Alan Wood, Robert Joseph Iasillo

Patent number: 8572051Abstract: Parallel execution of SQL statements is made fault-tolerant. Specifically, during parallel query processing, a new row source is created that allows checkpoints to be stored at certain points in the query processing. If a failure occurs, then the query can be restarted from the most recent checkpoint (rather than from the very beginning of the query). The checkpoints are implemented at operation boundaries where rows need to be redistributed among processes. These are natural checkpoint locations because (1) each subsequent operation can proceed from the output of the previous operation, which is stored as a checkpoint, and (2) these operation completions tend to be points in the computation where the query state is minimized, thus minimizing checkpoint storage requirements.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 2012Date of Patent: October 29, 2013Assignee: Oracle International CorporationInventors: Mengmeng Chen, Yali Zhu, Thierry Cruanes, Alan Wood

Publication number: 20130173866Abstract: Reducing contentions between processes or tasks that are trying to access shared resources is described herein. According to embodiments of the invention, a method of writing a set of data associated with a task to a memory resource is provided. The method includes calculating the amount of memory required to write said data to the memory resource and updating an expected end marker to reflect the amount of memory required to write the data to the memory resource. A flag is then set to an incomplete state, and the data is written to the memory resource. The flag can be set to a complete state and an end marker is updated. The end marker indicates the end of the data stored in the memory resource.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 30, 2011Publication date: July 4, 2013Applicant: Sybase, Inc.Inventors: Ameya Sakhalkar, Anunay Tiwari, Daniel Alan Wood, Kantikiran Krishna Pasupuleti

Publication number: 20130056108Abstract: A composite pipe comprises a polyetheretherketone innermost pipe around which a reinforcing overwrap is arranged. A protective sheath surrounds the overwrap. Such a composite pipe may be made by selecting a polyetheretherketone pipe having an outer region having a crystallinity of less than 25%; overlaying the selected pipe with overwrap; and subjecting the combination to heat, thereby causing the crystallinity of the outer region of the polyetheretherketone pipe to increase. The method reduces the risk of pipe failure.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 17, 2011Publication date: March 7, 2013Applicant: VICTREX MANUFACTURING LIMITEDInventors: Alan Wood, Horst Sandner

Patent number: 7905460Abstract: Improvements are provided for hubs for wall mounting systems for screens, and in particular to a hub for a wall mounting system for a flat panel screen, such as a plasma display or television screen, which enables the screen to be tilted. The hub comprises a casing, means for attaching the hub to a screen bracket, means for attaching the hub to an arm of a wall mount, and a tilt member. The tilt member has a sliding member which is located within an arcuate cavity in the casing such that the sliding member and casing are slidable relative to each other to enable a screen attached to the mounting system to be tilted about a horizontal pivot axis. The arc is defined by the cavity having its centre, which forms the pivot axis; offset from the centre of gravity of the screen. The hub further comprises a compression spring located within the casing and biased to provide a counterbalancing force so that the screen remains stationery in any position.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2008Date of Patent: March 15, 2011Assignee: Path Products LimitedInventors: Alan Woods, David Lees

Publication number: 20110003163Abstract: A polyetheretherketone film is used in the consolidation of a prepreg so that the film becomes incorporated into the consolidated prepreg, defines an outer layer of the consolidated prepreg and therefore provides the consolidated prepreg with advantageous properties. In one embodiment, a film may be used as a bagging material. In this embodiment, prepreg is positioned in a mould to define a precursor of a composite material. A bagging film is positioned next to the prepreg and a vacuum is applied via port to evacuate the space between the prepreg and film and induction heating is used to cause the resin in the prepreg to melt. In addition, the film yields and draws and this stretched film will cover the prepreg and act as a bagging material. Another embodiment addresses the problem of insertion and/or removal of an inflatable bladder in the manufacture of hollow articles and utilizes a gas filled thermoplastic bag.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 11, 2009Publication date: January 6, 2011Applicant: VICTREX MANUFACTURING LIMITEDInventor: Alan Wood
