  • Publication number: 20190181619
Abstract: A vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) array may comprise a plurality of VCSELs, a plurality of structures extending from a surface of the VCSEL array, and one or more metallization layers electrically connecting to one or more VCSELs of the plurality of VCSELs. The one or more metallization layers may include portions over the plurality of structures. The portions over the plurality of structures may extend to a height that is greater than other features on the surface of the VCSEL array. When the VCSEL array is on a submount, the plurality of structures may mechanically support the VCSEL array and to prevent the other features on the surface of the VCSEL array from contacting the submount.

  • Publication number: 20190097397
Abstract: In some implementations, a VCSEL array may include a plurality of VCSELs that each operates concurrently and emits light at a same wavelength. A first distance between a first pair of adjacent VCSELs, of the plurality of VCSELs, may be different from a second distance between a second pair of adjacent VCSELs of the plurality of VCSELs. The first pair of adjacent VCSELs may be located closer to a center of the VCSEL array than the second pair of adjacent VCSELs. At least one of temperature non-uniformity or optical power non-uniformity among the plurality of VCSELs may be reduced as compared to another VCSEL array, with a same physical footprint as the VCSEL array, comprising uniformly spaced VCSELs.

  • Patent number: 5761229
Abstract: An integrated laser-based light source that generates an output light beam having a controlled intensity. The light source comprises a package in which are mounted a laser, a light sensor and a coupler. The laser has one and only one light-emitting face from which a light beam is radiated as a radiated light beam. The light sensor generates an electrical signal representing the intensity of light energy falling it. The coupler couples a fraction of the radiated light beam to the light sensor, and provides the remainder of the radiated light beam as the output light beam. Since the light coupled to the light sensor by the coupler is a fraction of the radiated light beam, the electrical signal generated by the light sensor also represents the intensities of the radiated light beam and of the output light beam.
