  • Patent number: 4882855
Abstract: An apparatus in the dryer section of a paper or board making machine, wherein the section has a plurality of dryers. There is an initial region of dryers, each of which heats the web somewhat more, but not to the level of the maximum evaporation rate of the moisture contained in the web. It is not until the web is passing the end of said initial region that the web is heated to such a high temperature that it reaches the maximum evaporation rate of moisture in the web. The dryers of the initial region have smaller diameters, which may gradually increase up to the region of maximum evaporation rate, or they may all be of one smaller size. Following the initial region the dryer section has a region of dryers in which each dryer heats the web to the maximum evaporation rate of the moisture contained in the web. The dryer at the beginning of that regions has the largest diameter.

  • Patent number: 4880671
Abstract: A coating apparatus, for applying a coating substance to a paper web, has a chamber from which the coating substance is supplied via a slit type mouth communicating with an applicator space which is defined by the paper web and a doctor blade element. At the web, on the side of the applicator space from where the paper web enters, a throttling passage is formed by a back-pressure element in such a manner that a stream of excess coating substance issues from the applicator space via the throttling passage and abruptly separates from the web and in so doing flows away from the web predominantly as a film thereby preventing completely or almost completely the admission of air into the applicator space by the air boundary layer adjacent the moving web.

  • Patent number: 4783241
Abstract: A head box has a preferably fixed flow-carrying wall (11) and a movable flow-carrying wall (13) defining a nozzle-like stock conduit (14) and an outlet slot (15). The movable wall is provided with an adjustable profile bar (35) at the stock outlet slot. For coarse adjustment of the slot width, two lifting devices (21) act on the movable flow-carrying wall. Fine adjustment of the slot width is performed by adjustment spindles (36) acting on the profile bar.To improve adjustment of the stock outlet slot by the movable wall and to use the profile bar adjustment to perform very small corrections to the slot width, a front end section (24) of the movable wall located in the region of the stock outlet slot is flexibly constructed with respect to the remaining part of the wall, and a plurality of adjustment units (33) are spaced across the machine width and act on the flexible end section directly in front of the stock outlet slot.

  • Patent number: 4684444
Abstract: A sorter for paper pulp suspension including a rotationally symmetrical wire cage and a rotor supporting a plurality of vanes for rotating about the interior of the cage for moving suspension through the wire cage, the vanes being non-uniformly spaced. An annular pulp chamber surrounds the screen for collecting the pulp. A suspension outlet at the bottom of the pulp chamber receives the pulp from the pulp chamber. The pulp chamber extends axially beyond the lower end of the wire cage. An annular damping chamber surrounds the lower end of the pulp chamber and flow from the pulp chamber to the pulp outlet is past the damping chamber. The damping chamber develops a pool of the suspension in it. A pressurized gas cushion above the pool of suspension in the damping chamber controls the level thereof and damps the motion of the pulp in the pulp chamber.

  • Patent number: 4556453
Abstract: An apparatus especially suited for cleaning impurities from plastic screen belts of paper making machines is shown as having a first drum type brush operatively engaging, through its bristles, the screen belt. The bristles are made of material having a high affinity to such impurities. A second drum type brush, of which its bristles are made of material having a low affinity for such impurities, spaced from the screen belt, is in operative engagement with the first drum type brush as to remove the impurities, which the first drum type brush carries because of removal thereof from the screen belt, from the first drum type brush and deposit such impurities into a receiving area.

  • Patent number: 4555305
Abstract: In a belt pressing unit, which preferably serves as wet press of a paper machine, an elastic tubular press belt travels around a supporting body and, together with a back roll, forms an extended press zone. Beyond the press zone along the path of the press belt, liquid is fed to the inner side of the press belt in order to cool the press belt. This liquid is permitted to travel, together with the press belt, around the supporting body. Most of the liquid is then removed from the press belt, preferably at a position in front of the press zone. The liquid may then be cooled and fed back to the press belt. In addition, liquid may also be fed to the inner side of the press belt where the press belt enters the press zone, for cooling and lubricating a pressing surface of a press shoe which presses the press belt toward the back roll.

  • Patent number: 4356085
Abstract: The disclosure concerns a rotary screening machine for moving pulp suspension through a screening slot and for separating impurities from the pulp suspension. An annular rotatable drum is surrounded by an annular porous screen basket that is spaced away to define a screening slot. Pulp suspension is delivered to one axial end of the slot and is discharged from the other axial end of the slot. Generally wedged shaped vanes, widening in the axial direction between the leading and trailing ends of the vane, are provided around the drum. The wedge defining surfaces may also be inclined with respect to a respective plane perpendicular to the axis. The space between the wedge surfaces is an open volume. A wall in that space is oriented to help create appropriate vacuum and eddy conditions behind the vane. The drum may have different zones, with the lower zone being provided with vanes and the upper zone being generally smooth. Other types of vanes or projections may be provided in the intermediate zone.
