  • Patent number: 6663672
Abstract: A dynamic prosthetic foot having variable cross section density. An ankle part diverges upwardly from a sole along a transverse parting line and includes a vertical part. A longitudinally extending slot divides the vertical part into a lateral pylon support and a medial pylon support. A lateral pylon connector is secured to the lateral pylon support and a medial pylon connector is secured to the medial pylon support. A second embodiment eliminates the pylon connectors and the lateral and medial pylon supports are elongated to provide lateral and medial pylons. High rigidity areas of the foot are formed of a high strength outer layer made with carbon reinforced composite and an inner layer made of a matrix within which is dispersed a plurality of low density hollow spheres. High stress areas of the foot are formed of carbon-reinforced composite throughout.

  • Patent number: 6596027
Abstract: A prosthetic lock assembly of the ratchet type for connecting a liner for a prosthetic socket to a prosthesis. The lock assembly includes a two part locking mechanism held together by suitable fasteners. Removal or loosening of the fasteners enables a user to separate the two parts from one another in the event a sock gets into and jams the locking mechanism. In a first set of four embodiments, a latch is formed in a first part of the locking mechanism and in a second set of four embodiments, the latch is formed in a second part of the locking mechanism. The lock assembly may be mounted internally or externally of the prosthetic socket. The first part of the locking mechanism may be a laminating ring or a thermoforming plate and the second part may be a mounting block with or without a pyramid for controlling a prosthetic pylon.

  • Patent number: 6544292
Abstract: A prosthetic liner having a soft gel interior and a fabric-covered exterior includes an air passageway formed in the gel near the distal end of the liner. A one-way valve is positioned between the gel and the fabric with its intake side being disposed in fluid communication with the air passageway. Air passing through the air passageway is expelled through the output side of the valve through the fabric exterior. Ambulation of a user wearing the liner on a residual limb causes expulsion of air entrapped within the liner through the one-way valve.

  • Patent number: 6511513
Abstract: A prosthetic lock assembly of the ratchet type for connecting a liner for a prosthetic socket to a prosthesis. The lock assembly includes a two part locking mechanism held together by suitable fasteners. Removal or loosening of the fasteners enables a user to separate the two parts from one another in the event a sock gets into and jams the locking mechanism. In a first set of four embodiments, a latch is formed in a first part of the locking mechanism and in a second set of four embodiments, the latch is formed in a second part of the locking mechanism. In all embodiments, an elongate latching pin that depends from a prosthetic socket liner has annular ratchets formed in it along its length and the latch selectively engages the latching pin between the ratchets.

  • Patent number: 6454812
Abstract: A prosthetic liner made of gel has an externally mounted fabric reinforcement at its distal end to limit pistoning of the residual limb. The fabric is substantially inextensible in a longitudinal direction but is extensible in a radial direction relative to the longitudinal axis of the residual limb. The fabric is provided in a single layer in one embodiment and in a double layer in a second embodiment, but in all embodiments a distal umbrella is secured to a distal end of the liner. A distal umbrella has a base embedded in the gel in a first embodiment. The base is disposed in overlying relation to the gel and in underlying relation to the fabric in a second embodiment. The gel is thickened at the distal end of the liner so that the durability and comfort level of the liner compares favorably with the durability and comfort of silicone liners. The liner is as easy to put on and take off as a sock, there being no need to roll the its liner onto the residual limb.

  • Patent number: 5897517
Abstract: A fabric reinforced elastomer material which is useful in the medical art is disclosed. The fabric reinforced elastomer material includes a first base material and a second base material. The present invention is useful for fashioning suspension sleeves, brace supports, cushion pads for orthosis devices and compression garments.

  • Patent number: 5728168
Abstract: Elastomeric interface for prosthesis having two integral and inseparable sections separated by a line of demarcation where the hardness of the two sections is shown. The interface has a first soft section and a second hard section. The soft section makes contact with the skin. The hard section is located at the connection points to the prosthesis. The interface is made by injecting a first batch of soft elastomer into a mold, followed by the injection of a second batch of hard elastomer into the mold, onto the first-formed part, so that the materials of different hardness bond naturally to one another.

  • Patent number: 5507837
Abstract: A light-in-weight locking device laminated within a hard prosthesis socket includes a plastic base molded in gripping relation to a metallic pyramid so that the locking device is a one piece, integrally formed unit. A flange of the pyramid is embedded within the base to prevent separation of the base and pyramid. One or more recesses are formed in a central part of the pyramid and plastic positioned in those recesses prevents relative rotation between the base and the pyramid. Circumferentially extending cavities formed in the base receive parts of the prosthesis socket to prevent relative rotation between the base and the socket. The unit has a truncate longitudinal extent so that it easily fits within the socket.

  • Patent number: 5507834
Abstract: A clear liquid silicone rubber is modified by the addition of an elongation enhancer. The resulting silicone compound is molded into a form that overlies the residual limb of an amputee and provides an interface member between the residual limb and a prosthesis. A nonsilicone substrate is partially embedded in the bottom of the interface member and a nonembedded part of the substrate provides a connection to the prosthesis. Electrons are stripped from the surface of the substrate, an adhesion promoter is applied, and the clear silicone polymer is vulcanized onto the substrate so that it bonds to the silicone portion of the adhesion promoter.
