Patent number: 11487322Abstract: An electronic device is disclosed. The electronic device may include an enclosure and a transparent cover. The electronic device may include a display assembly. The electronic device may further include an inductive charging unit designed to inductively charge a stylus, or other object suitable for use with the display assembly. The electronic device may further include audio modules, at least some of which are designed to cause resonation of the enclosure to produce acoustical energy in the form of audible sound. Some audio modules produce acoustical energy in relatively low frequencies, while other audio modules produce acoustical energy in relatively high frequencies. The electronic device may further include a vision system designed for facial recognition. The display assembly may include a metal chassis as well as antennae for wireless communication. In order to prevent antennae interference, the metal chassis can be electrically grounded to the enclosure.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 2020Date of Patent: November 1, 2022Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Melody L. Kuna, Ryan J. Mihelich, Taylor Harrison Gilbert, Joel N. Ruscher, Carli E. Oster, Alex Chun Lap Yeung

Publication number: 20210298212Abstract: An electronic device that includes a circuit board and a shield designed to cover the circuit board is disclosed. The shield can provide radio frequency shielding, thermal energy dissipation, and desense mitigation. The shield provides added structural benefits. For example, the thermal assembly can be made with a non-metal material, such as graphite. Further, the thermally assembly may include multiple graphite layers secured by adhesive layers. Additionally, the shield can rely upon adhesives/tapes to adhere to a metal wall located on a perimeter of the circuit board. In this manner, the shield can provide a compliant body that conforms to the position and location of the metal wall, account for tolerance variations in the metal wall, and thus prevent bending of the metal wall, as opposed to using rigid metal bodies. Based on the adhesive properties, the shield requires no holes for fasteners.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 25, 2020Publication date: September 23, 2021Inventors: Kevin K. MAYER, Alex Chun Lap YEUNG, Chunwei YU, Judith C. SEGURA, Lee B. HAMSTRA, John V. ABRAM

Patent number: 8809708Abstract: A process is provided for characterizing a tactile response of a first mechanical actuator (e.g., button) based on a back off distance. The first mechanical actuator may include a plunger, a dome-shaped flexible membrane, and an electrical contact, all aligned with each other so that a contact signal is generated when the flexible membrane touches the contact. The plunger can be moved a first distance towards the contact until the contact signal is generated at a contact point. Then the plunger can be backed off a second distance from the contact point. This second distance may be called the “back off distance”. The particular feel of the first mechanical actuator can then be correlated to a particular back off distance. This process can be repeated a number of times to classify a number of different “feels” for the first mechanical actuator based on a number of different back off distances.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 2013Date of Patent: August 19, 2014Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Benjamin M. Rappoport, Kevin Gibbs, Patrick Kessler, Derek W. Wright, Alex Chun Lap Yeung

Patent number: 8570736Abstract: A portable computing device is disclosed. The portable computing device can take many forms, such as a laptop computer, a tablet computer, and so on. The portable computing device can include at least a single piece housing with a cavity having a substantially flat bottom wall. A battery assembly and main logic board can be mounted directly to the substantially flat bottom wall with a plurality of additional components arranged around a peripheral edge of the battery assembly and main logic board.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 2011Date of Patent: October 29, 2013Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Stephen Robert McClure, Sean S. Patent number: 8493740Abstract: A component retention mechanism facilitates improved installation, retention and removal of hardware components (e.g., PCI cards) on a personal computer. The retention mechanism includes a locking component, support member, and release mechanism coupled to each other. The locking component can be a steel bar or other stiff item positioned proximate to multiple socket connectors on a circuit board. The locking component moves between unlocked and locked positions that mechanically and simultaneously unlock or lock in place multiple add-in cards inserted into the socket connectors. The support member moves and thereby facilitates movement of the locking component between locked and unlocked positions. The release mechanism facilitates movement of the support member and is actuated when a force is exerted by a user thereto. An associated slider housing coupled to the release mechanism and support member includes a fan, support shelves and a door that provides additional support to oversized PCI cards.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 2011Date of Patent: July 23, 2013Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Vinh H. Diep, Giles Matthew Lowe, Peter Russell-Clarke, Phillip Satterfield, Clark Everett Waterfall, Alex Chun lap Yeung
