  • Patent number: 4397470
Abstract: An oil slinger is held in place on a shaft by an O-ring which serves as a detent when the shaft is at rest and as a static seal when the shaft is rotating. Because the slinger is held only by a detent action in the rest position, the slinger can be moved aside during assembly and disassembly of the companion bearing and seal structure and thereby provide greater access.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 3, 1981
Date of Patent: August 9, 1983
    Assignee: Elliott Turbomachinery Co., Inc.
Inventors: Alexander A. Carroll, William F. Hannan, III
  • Patent number: 4391349
Abstract: A turbomachine lubricating oil system comprising a casing having a relatively large diameter member rotatably mounted therein with a chamber defined thereby. A support for said casing includes a generally hollow structural member defining a quiescent plenum. Lubricating oil flows from said casing chamber to the quiescent plenum. Oil flows from the quiescent plenum to a lubricating oil reservoir.

    Assignee: Carrier Corporation
Inventors: Alexander A. Carroll, William F. Hannan, III
  • Patent number: 4032253
Abstract: A member interposed between the inner and outer casings of a rotary machine which is arranged to hold the casings in concentric alignment with the machine shaft as the two casings undergo transient thermal and pressure growth.

Inventors: Robert G. Ryncosky, Alexander A. Carroll
  • Patent number: 4007998
Abstract: An adjustable blade assembly for use in a rotary machine, such as a turbine or a compressor, wherein the airfoil is separable from the assembly at the blade platform. The airfoil is provided with a root which is seated within a complementary kerf formed within the platform. Each of the two sections is fabricated independently using standard machine tools, thereby eliminating the need of hand-forming, complex blade contours. In assembly, the airfoil is loosely supported within the platform whereby the stresses generated at resonant frequencies are highly damped.

  • Patent number: RE32042
Abstract: The stator blades of a stage of an axial flow turbo machine are assembled in an arcuate series, as by insertion of the journals at the outer ends of the blades in the stator housing. A one-piece arcuate inner shroud ring is formed with aperture spaced circumferentially comparable to the spacing of the inner ends of the blades in the series. The diameter of the apertures exceeds the diameter of the blade journals. Force is applied to the ends of the ring to control or bow the same sufficiently to permit insertion of the contracted ring into the series of blades. Upon insertion of the ring, the contracting force is relieved, permitting the ring to expand to normal contour whereby the inner journals of the blades become positioned in the apertures of the ring. Thereafter annular bearings are inserted in the space between the journals and the bores of the apertures.
