  • Publication number: 20060098266
Abstract: In one embodiment, a capacitive micro electromechanical systems (MEMS) device includes a dielectric spacer between a bottom electrode and a movable member. The movable member may serve as a top electrode. A gap separates the top electrode from the dielectric spacer. The movable member may be actuated to deflect towards the bottom electrode by electrostatic force. The dielectric spacer reduces the height of the gap that would otherwise be formed between a top surface of the bottom electrode and a bottom surface of the movable member, thereby improving squeeze-film damping. The movable member may be a ribbon of a ribbon-type diffractive spatial light modulator, for example.

  • Publication number: 20050237743
Abstract: A spatial light modulator is provided having a two-dimensional (2D), close-packed MEMS (Micro-Electromechanical System) array of diffractive pixels. Each pixel includes a number of diffractive elements or diffractors. Each diffractor includes a tent member disposed above and spaced apart from an upper surface of a substrate, a movable actuator disposed between the substrate and the tent member, and a driver moving the actuator. The tent member has a first planar light reflective surface facing away from the substrate, the first planar light reflective surface having an aperture formed therein. The actuator has a second planar light reflective surface parallel to and potentially coplanar with the first planar light reflective surface and positioned relative to the aperture to receive light passing therethrough.

  • Patent number: 6958818
Abstract: An interferometer comprises a membrane, a substrate, and a support structure. The membrane comprises a first reflector. The substrate comprises a second reflector. The support structure circumferentially couples the membrane to the substrate and orients the first reflector parallel to and facing the second reflector.

  • Publication number: 20050212004
Abstract: A light modulator and a method of manufacturing the same are provided having a substrate with reflectivity enhancing layers formed thereon. The layers include at least a top surface for receiving incident light, a first layer overlying the substrate, and a second layer between the top surface and the first layer, the second layer overlying and abutting the first layer. The second layer has a predetermined thickness selected in relation to an index of refraction of the second layer and to a wavelength of the incident light such that the light reflecting off an interface between the first and second layers constructively interferes with light reflected from the top surface. Preferably, the first layer also has a predetermined thickness selected such that the light reflecting off an interface between the first layer and the substrate constructively interferes with light reflected from the top surface.

  • Publication number: 20050094315
Abstract: An information storage system includes a transducer having a loop of ferromagnetic material with pole tips separated by an nonferromagnetic gap located adjacent to a medium such as a rigid disk. During writing the separation between the pole tips and the media layer of the disk is a small fraction of the gap separation. Due to the small separation between the pole tips and the media layer, the magnetic field generated by the transducer and felt by the media has a larger perpendicular than longitudinal component, favoring perpendicular recording over longitudinal recording. The media may have an easy axis of magnetization oriented substantially along the perpendicular direction, so that perpendicular data storage is energetically favored. The transducer may also include a magnetoresistive sensor for reading magnetic information from the disk.

  • Patent number: 6801354
Abstract: A 2D diffraction grating light valve modulates an incident beam of light. A plurality of elements each have a reflective surface with their respective reflective surfaces substantially coplanar. Alternatively, the reflective surfaces of the plurality of elements lie within one or more parallel planes. The elements are supported in relation to one another. Preferably, a planar member includes a plurality of holes arranged in a symmetrical two-dimensional array and configured such that the holes substantially optically extend the elements. Alternatively, one or more elements substantially optically extends the plurality of holes. The planar member includes a light reflective planar surface that is parallel to the plane of the elements within a functional area of the device. The planar member is supported in relation to the elements. By applying an appropriate biasing voltage to the planar member, the planar member can be moved in a direction normal to the plane of the elements.

  • Patent number: 6660552
Abstract: A grating light valve with reduced surface charging is disclosed. Surface charging is measured by the propensity an insulating surface to accept and transport a charge. The grating light valve of the instant invention has a plurality of spaced and movable ribbons formed from Si3N4 coupled to a substrate structure formed of SiO2. A portion of the ribbons are moved to alternate between conditions for constructive and destructive interference with an incident light source having a wavelength &lgr; by applying the appropriate switching voltages across the portion of ribbons and the substrate structure. When charging occurs on surfaces of the grating light valve, the switching voltages required to operate the grating light valve are shifted and diminishing the performance of the grating light valve.

  • Patent number: 6387723
Abstract: A method of treating silicon-based surfaces for reducing charge migration is disclosed. In accordance with the method, a silicon-based surface is treated with Nitrogen-rich pacifying gas environment, after the surface is actuated. The surface is actuated in a drying step, wherein residual water or moisture is removed from the surfaces at an elevated temperature and a reduced pressure. The method of the instant invention is particularly useful for the treatment of ribbon surfaces in grating light valve device, wherein after the ribbon surfaces are treated according to the current invention, surface charging remains low for several days, even in open air conditions.
