Patent number: 8219106Abstract: A reverse link load control strategy utilizes a total call load metric in place of a reverse signal strength indicator metric for managing reverse link resources. In a disclosed example, a load control module (40) measures the reverse signal strength indicator (62) and measures an active cell load (64) using known techniques. A relationship between the reverse signal strength indicator, the active cell load, an other cell load component and a jammer component provides the ability to determine the other cell load component and the jammer component. Once the other cell load component has been determined, a total call load based upon the active cell load component and the other cell load component provides a useful metric for allocating reverse link resources between existing users and for determining whether to allow a new user, for example.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 2005Date of Patent: July 10, 2012Assignee: Alcatel LucentInventors: Martin H. Patent number: 7610058Abstract: It is possible to operate a wireless system, such as a CDMA system, in a more efficient manner by employing a statistical approach for setting power targets for reverse loop transmission. Unlike present methods for setting such targets a figure-of-merit quantity such as the frame error rate need not be measured to set the reverse loop transmission power for a wireless unit. Instead the target is set on a statistical basis established by sampling. Real time measurement of a quantity-of-merit is not required. A statistical approach produces among other things a decreased sensitivity to rapid changes in transmission conditions.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2005Date of Patent: October 27, 2009Assignee: Alcatel-Lucent USA Inc.Inventors: John Allan Morrison, Alexandro Salvarani, Philip Alfred Whiting

Patent number: 7499433Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting discontinued transmission (DTX) frames in data frames received over a link or channel, is described, where a DTX frame is a frame that does not carry data and which is transmitted with zero power over the link or channel. The method and apparatus determines whether a received data frame is a DTX frame based on a plurality of metrics. Based on the metrics, the method and apparatus may effectively discriminate a case where a data frame is received as an erasure (e.g., data frame received with errors), and a case where a transmitted data frame is received as a DTX frame.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 2002Date of Patent: March 3, 2009Assignee: Alcatel-Lucent USA Inc.Inventors: Francis Dominique, Martin Howard Meyers, Leonard Piazzi, Alexandro Salvarani

Patent number: 7245919Abstract: A method of processing, in parallel fashion, messages from a User Equipment (UE) in soft handoff with a plurality of base stations of a wireless communication system. Measurement Messages from the User Equipment are received and stored in a message buffer for a defined period of time. Later arriving messages replace previous messages during the defined period of time. When the defined period of time elapses, the latest stored message is processed in parallel fashion in a processing pipeline with other messages for the UE and other UEs. The latest message is processed by first converting it to soft handoff actions and inserting such actions into a processing pipeline. A conflict table is generated during the parallel processing of the soft handoff actions to avoid the processing of messages that conflict with each other. Conflicting messages are put into a pending state and remain in such state until they are canceled by subsequent messages or the conflict no longer exists.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 2003Date of Patent: July 17, 2007Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Kin Nang Lau, Ali Masoomzadeh-Fard, Martin H. Patent number: 7181235Abstract: An algorithm calculates a correction value to be applied to a slot in an adjustment period for power correction. The adjustment period is divided into segments having a plurality of slots, and a target power value is determined for each segment. For each slot, the algorithm determines whether adding a correction value in a given slot would bring the actual accumulative adjustment value closer or farther from the target power value for the segment corresponding to the given slot. The correction value is added to consecutive slots in the segment. The algorithm also checks the total amount of adjustment applied to the slots over a sliding adjustment window to make sure that the total amount of adjustment applied to the slots in the window do not exceed a predetermined maximum threshold.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 2003Date of Patent: February 20, 2007Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Xiaohua Chen, Walid E. Patent number: 7123931Abstract: An algorithm calculates a correction value to be applied to a slot in an adjustment period for power correction. For each slot, the algorithm determines whether adding a correction value in a given slot would bring the actual accumulative adjustment value closer or farther from an accumulative adjustment target value. The accumulative adjustment target value has a linear relationship with the slot number and is calculated for each slot to ensure that any corrections are evenly distributed over the adjustment period for a smooth correction. In one embodiment, the algorithm also checks the total amount of adjustment applied to the slots over a sliding adjustment window to make sure that the total amount of adjustment applied to the slots in the adjustment window do not exceed a predetermined maximum threshold.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 2003Date of Patent: October 17, 2006Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Xiaohua Chen, Walid E. Publication number: 20060223447Abstract: A wireless communication network (20) utilizes a down bias to minimize or eliminate random walk when controlling a transmit power between a base station (38) and a mobile station (40). In a disclosed example, a link quality monitoring module (54) determines the quality of a link between the mobile station (40) and the base station (38). A power control module (52) applies a down bias, which is dependent on the determined link quality, to a transmit power correction for minimizing random walk. In a disclosed example, the down bias varies linearly and inversely proportionally to the quality of the link between the mobile station and the base station.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 31, 2005Publication date: October 5, 2006Inventors: Ali Masoomzadeh-Fard, Martin Meyers, Walid Nabhane, Richard Pauls, Alexandro Salvarani, Carl Weaver
