  • Publication number: 20020163691
Abstract: A wavelength division multiplexing/demultiplexing device is presented utilizing a polarization-based filter to separate odd and even wavelengths, or upper and lower channels of an input optical signal. The wavelength filter first converts the input signal to a predetermined polarization. A series of birefringent waveplates provide a polarization-dependent optical transmission function such that the polarized beam is decomposed into a first beam component carrying the first spectral band at a first polarization and a second beam component carrying the second spectral band at a second, orthogonal polarization. A beam displacer spatially separates the beam components into a pair of orthogonally-polarized beams. A quarter-wave plate converts these orthogonally-polarized beams into a pair of circularly-polarized beams, which are reflected by a mirror back along parallel optical paths through the quarter-wave plate, beam displacer, and waveplates.

  • Patent number: 6231406
Abstract: A contact strip includes a number of conductive contacts (4), a contact carrier (5) and a corresponding number of links (6) connecting corresponding contacts to the contact carrier. Each contact includes a contact portion (42) and a soldering portion (43) opposite the contact portion for attaching a solder ball for soldering to a printed circuit board. The contact portion is plated with gold using a molten gold plating liquid for enhancing electrical/mechanical characteristics of the contact portion. Each link defines a longitudinal slot (61) for obstructing a wicking path from the contact to the contact carrier. Furthermore, an elongate opening (52) is defined in the contact carrier above and perpendicular to a corresponding slot to further prevent the plating liquid from wicking up to the contact carrier, thereby preventing loss of the expensive plating liquid and reducing the cost of the contact.

  • Patent number: 5583077
Abstract: Integrated circuits may be passivated by means of two deposited layers--one of phosphosilicate glass and one of silicon nitride. It was observed that if significant time elapsed between the deposition of the phosphosilicate and the silicon nitride, appreciable degradation of the underlying metallurgy, in the form of voids, occurred. This was traced to a change, over time, in the stresses to which the metallurgy was being subjected--from tensile to compressive. This problem has been solved in the present invention by the provision of a dry environment in which to store the integrated circuits between the application of the two passivation layers.
