  • Patent number: 6701026
Abstract: A lighting normalisation method, apparatus and computer program product are disclosed. First, lighting parameters are estimated (110) optimally based on a shading model. After applying segmentation (120), each generated region is assigned are liability based on the stochastic model of that object. This reliability is used to distinguish (130) shadow from object detail. Regions are then further split and merged (140) according to these reliabilities. Finally, the lighting parameters of these regions are calculated and the object is reconstructed (150) to a normalised lighting condition. This technique can be used for an object recognition system, i.e., face recognition applications, as well as for image enhancement, image retrieval, machine vision and related regions.

  • Publication number: 20040038542
Abstract: A first method of reducing semiconductor device substrate effects comprising the following steps. O+ or O2+ are selectively implanted into a silicon substrate to form a silicon-damaged silicon oxide region. One or more devices are formed over the silicon substrate proximate the silicon-damaged silicon oxide region within at least one upper dielectric layer. A passivation layer is formed over the at least one upper dielectric layer. The passivation layer and the at least one upper dielectric layer are patterned to form a trench exposing a portion of the silicon substrate over the silicon-damaged silicon oxide region. The silicon-damaged silicon oxide region is selectively etched to form a channel continuous and contiguous with the trench whereby the channel reduces the substrate effects of the one or more semiconductor devices.

  • Patent number: 6696715
Abstract: A method of forming a capacitor with reduced leakage current on a substrate in a semiconductor device is set forth. A first layer of a conductive material is formed over the substrate, and a second layer of a dielectric is formed over the first layer. The second layer is contacted with hydrogen, oxygen and nitrous oxide gases to form an oxidation layer over the second layer. A third layer of a conductive material is formed over the second layer to thereby form the capacitor. While the capacitor exhibits an improved leakage current reduction, overall capacitance is substantially unaffected, as compared to a similar capacitor having an oxidation layer built from a combination of oxygen and hydrogen gases only.

  • Publication number: 20040034291
Abstract: A method of determining the analyte concentration of a test sample is described. A temperature gradient is introduced in the test sample and infrared radiation detectors measure radiation at selected analyte absorbance peak and reference wavelengths. Reference and analytical signals are detected. In the presence of the selected analyte, parameter differences between reference and analytical signals are detectable. These parameter differences, having a relationship to analyte concentration, are measured, correlated, and processed to determine analyte concentration in the test sample. Accuracy is enhanced by inducing a periodically modulated temperature gradient in the test sample. The analytical and reference signals may be measured continuously and the parameter difference integrated over the measurement period to determine analyte concentration.

  • Publication number: 20040032854
Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus and method for synchronizing sampling frequencies of a receiver and a transmitter of a multi-carrier communication system. The receiver includes an estimator for estimating a frequency offset by employing an additional angle rotation of a received signal in frequency domain. The apparatus includes a compensation loop filter for generating a first output in response to a frequency offset compensation, an adder for adding the estimated frequency offset and the first output to generate a second output, and a loop filter for generating the frequency offset compensation according to the second output. The method repeatedly applies the apparatus to generate the frequency offset compensation, and then feeds it back to an oscillator to compensate the sampling frequency of the receiver. The apparatus and method can also be applied to a communication system with a carrier frequency offset.
