  • Patent number: 7080311
Abstract: A method of transmitting convolutionally encoded data with separate, independent and looped encoding over at least one data portion. The data is distributed over one or more cycles, and a plurality of cycles can be grouped into packets for discontinuous transmission if necessary. Weighted decoding is effected independently and cycle by cycle: it starts at a robust location, with a relatively high likelihood, and terminates at a weak location, with a weak likelihood, ignoring the concept of time. This limits the size of the packets of errors and prevents the propagation of packets of errors due to scrambling. Independent encoding and decoding of data can be effected without exchanging parameters between cycles and the parameters of each cycle (size, redundancy, constraint length) can be separate. Different degrees of protection and time-delay are permitted as a function of the nature of the data to be transmitted (voice, digital data, signaling, etc.).

  • Patent number: 7077951
Abstract: A vessel or kettle for holding water has a first chamber from which water can be pumped though a filter into a second chamber. The pump can be gravity, manual or power operated. Cold water from the first chamber can be pumped though an annular filter of ion exchange resins into the second chamber where it can be heated. The contents of filter can be held in a replaceable porous bag. A meter can indicate the amount transferred, eg in multiples of a volume such as a cupful. The vessel can have a spout valve that selectively allows the first chamber to be filled or water to be poured from the second chamber. The first chamber and/or the pump can be external to the vessel. The pump can include non-return valves and a siphon system.

  • Patent number: 7080173
Abstract: A technique for reducing information reception delays is provided. The technique reduces delays that may be caused by protocols that guarantee order and delivery, such as TCP/IP. The technique creates multiple connections between a sender and recipient computing devices and sends messages from the sender to the recipient on the multiple corrections redundantly. The recipient can then use the first arriving message and ignore the subsequently arriving redundant messages. The recipient can also wait for a period of time before determining which of the arrived messages to use. The technique may dynamically add connections if messages are not consistently received in a timely manner on multiple connections. Conversely, the technique may remove connections if messages are consistently received in a timely manner on multiple connections. The technique can accordingly be used with applications that are intolerant of data reception delays such as Voice over IP, real-time streaming audio, or real-time streaming video.

  • Patent number: 7079045
Abstract: A device for controlling a controlled device includes a remote control unit having a transmitter, a processor, a clock connected to the processor, and a control keypad. The remote control unit is removably engageable in a support, and when the remote control unit is in a first position relative to the support, manipulation of the keypad results in sending programming commands to the processor such that the processor can transmit control signals to the controlled device at user-defined times. On the other hand, when the remote control unit is not in the first position relative to the support, manipulation of the keypad causes the transmitter to send commands to the controlled device. Alternatively, when the remote control unit is in the first position relative to the support, the keypad is disabled, such that commands may be sent to the controlled device from the device only automatically at preprogrammed times.

  • Publication number: 20060152871
Abstract: A method of stabilizing an arc between electrode tips in a high pressure arc discharge lamp is provided comprising initially creating an arc between the pair of electrodes during a start-up phase of the lamp by supplying power to the lamp for a first period. The method then transitions the arc to attach itself between the tips of the electrodes by removing the power supplied to the lamp for a second period and then resupplying power to the lamp after completion of the second period. The first and second periods for respectively initially supplying and removing power are preferably selected based on either an elapsed period of time, the measured operating lamp voltage, or the measured lamp pressure. Once the arc becomes attached to the tips of the electrodes in this manner, the arc will remain stabilized between the electrode tips during operation of the discharge lamp.

  • Publication number: 20060152957
Abstract: An inventive circuit arrangement for setting selected operating parameters in a RAM module contains, for each element in a set of M different operating parameters, a respective value register which is individually assigned, can be set using an individual control signal and is intended to store an item of value information that has been input for the relevant parameter. A first group of external terminals is dedicated to inputting destination information which indicates the respective parameter to be set, and a second group of external terminals is dedicated to inputting value information for the parameters. Provision is also made of a selection device which can be controlled using the destination information which has been input at the first group of terminals in order to transmit the value information which has been input at the second group of terminals only to that value register which is assigned to the indicated parameter.

  • Publication number: 20060150744
Abstract: In this device for indicating (10) pretensioning forces in a tensioning element (7), such as tie-sown straps or tie-down ropes, the spring surrounds the tie bolt (3) which is located on the loop of the tie-down strap, and in response to weak forces describes a path (6) which is easily visible. The combination of two components which differ in shape allows the spring (1) to maintain its shape and spring constant. As a result, the pretensioning force is indicated directly, yet the spring is not subject to an additional load under high tensions but is protected by positive engagement.
