Preferably, the inorganic catalyst used in step (a) comprises tectosilicates, phyilosilicates or hydrotalcites and more preferably zeolites or bentonites. The carbohydrate-containing material further comprises preferably LCB and the defined monomeric or oligomeric building blocks are preferably glucoses, xyloses, arabinoses and oligomers thereof.
