    Abstract: A communication system is disclosed having a base station and a cordless mobile station for communicating with the base station. The base station includes a data interface for connection to a data line in a normal mode of operation. The base station has a detector and a transmitter. The detector detects whether the data interface is connected to the data line. In response to the detector detecting that the data interface is not connected to the data line, the transmitter transmits a test signal to the cordless mobile station for measuring the field strength of the test signal received thereby.
