  • Publication number: 20080050531
Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for wetting a continuous web. An apparatus according to the present invention includes a dwell surface adapted to receive a traveling web and a fluid chamber in fluid communication with such traveling web. The fluid chamber is coupled to a fluid source. Fluid from the fluid chamber is applied to the web and the web is drawn across the dwell surface. The web may be drawn away from the dwell surface at an angle that may be adjustable. Alternatively, an embodiment of the apparatus includes a plurality of dwell surfaces, one of which may be selectively engaged with the traveling web. A method according to the present invention involves the steps of providing a continuous web, applying a fluid to the web and drawing the web across a dwell surface.

  • Publication number: 20080047658
Abstract: Provided is a method for bonding continuous traveling webs, which allows for significant increase in web processing speeds. A method according to the present invention includes providing a web including a bonding agent that may require activation prior to adhesion. Bonding agent activation may be, for example, by heat transfer or wetting. The primary activation of the bonding agent occurs separately from any applied force required for proper adhesion. Adhesion force may be applied by a noncatalytic pressure means including a crimp roller. The method may further include the insertion of a product between web layers to be brought into adhesive engagement with one another. A further web process step may include the cutting of bonded webs.

  • Publication number: 20070014776
Abstract: The present invention provides methods of identifying polypeptides that have enzymatic activity associated with nutrient and/or energy homeostasis, and thus, are involved in the development of one or more cardiovascular and metabolic disorders, e.g., cardiovascular disease, obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and metabolic syndrome. One such method comprises identifying a polypeptide as a member of the adiponutrin family of proteins. As such, the invention is related to the polynucleotides and polypeptides belonging to the adiponutrin family, and provides novel isolated and purified polynucleotides and polypeptides of a novel member of the adiponutrin family, patatin-like phospholipase domain 1 (PNPLA1). Also provided are methods of using the polynucleotides and polypeptides related to or provided by the invention for screening a test compound, e.g., a small molecule, antibody, etc.

  • Publication number: 20050172362
Abstract: The present invention relates to improved cultivars, varieties, lines or plants of annual medics (Medicago genus) wherein the majority of seed pods, upon reaching maturity, remain attached to their respective pedicels. In particular, the present invention relates to improved cultivars, varieties, lines or plants of annual medics (Medicago genus), having a mutant form of the gene for pod shedding, thereby resulting in a “pod holding” trait. The invention also extends to methods for isolating such plants. A yet further aspect of the invention relates to a method of transferring the “pod holding” trait from an annual medic having this trait to another annual medic of the genus Medicago by a process of controlled cross-breeding. A still further aspect of the invention relates to a method of obtaining plants having the “pod holding” trait from a population of annual medics of the genus Medicago.

  • Publication number: 20050064058
Abstract: An embossing method and apparatus (20) comprises a rotary embossing device (32) having a radial direction (28) and an outer peripheral surface (34). The embossing device (32) includes at least one embossing-component (48) which extends at least radially outward from the peripheral surface (34), and is configured to provide for a first embossing-pattern (38). The embossing device (32) also includes a rotary shaft member (46). A base embossing-segment (50) is operatively joined to the rotary shaft member (46) and configured to carry a first base-section (40) of the first embossing-component (48). In a particular aspect, a first, supplemental embossing-segment (52) is operatively joined and selectively positionable on the rotary shaft member (46), and is configured to carry a first supplemental-section (42) of the first embossing-component (48).

  • Publication number: 20050035492
Abstract: An apparatus and process (20) for forming an embossed web or other article can include moving a target, composite web (26) along an appointed machine-direction (22) at a selected web speed, and operatively contacting the target web (26) with a rotary embossing device (38) to thereby form a non-linear embossment region (82) in at least a selected embossment portion of the target web (26). For example, the web speed can be at least a minimum of about 1.9 m/sec. In a particular aspect, the embossing device (38) can include an outer peripheral surface (42) having a lateral cross-direction (24) and a circumferential-direction (40), and can include a non-linear embossing member (44) located on the outer surface (42). In another aspect, the embossing member (44) can be configured to include a selected traversing occurrence along the circumferential-direction (40) of the embossing device (38). In a further aspect, the embossing member (44) can be configured to include a selected lateral traversing distance (50).

  • Publication number: 20050025631
Abstract: A method for monitoring the mechanical condition of a reciprocating compressor having a packed-plunger cylinder is provided. An end assembly is attached to one end of the cylinder, and the strain of at least one component of the end assembly is measured as the plunger reciprocates within the cylinder. The measured strain is correlated with a crank angle to facilitate generation of a strain profile. Two pressure values related to the pressure in the cylinder are determined when the plunger is at two different locations. This facilitates generation of a cylinder pressure profile based on the correlated measured strain. The cylinder pressure profile is thus generated without the use of intrusive gauges or sensors, which may create a leak path, or create a stress concentration in the wall of the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 6106288
Abstract: A system for treating teeth and associated tooth structure using a pressurized air propellant mixed with abrasive material includes a manifold which defines air passages leading from the pressurized air source to dispensing chambers which hold the abrasive material. The manifold further provides a convenient structure for mounting a number of the system components. The manifold simplifies assembly of the system and improves the integrity of air passages within the system. The air abrasion system also has a mixing block and continuous purge feature which eliminate crosstalk and backflow problems when switching between abrasive materials. Evacuation apparatus incorporating a cyclone separator is integrally provided with the system which requires minimal regular maintenance and maximizes suction flow through the apparatus.
