Abstract: A storage device including: a local storage for storing items on the storage device; a display for displaying prioritized menus of item entries, wherein the item entries represent high-use items and low-use items; a memory in which is stored: program code for setting criteria related to parameters external to the prioritized menus, the criteria being based on a usage likelihood of each item represented by each associated item entry; and program code for applying the criteria to modify a priority order of the item entries in the prioritized menus; and a CPU for executing the program code. Preferably, the memory has program code for conserving storage space in the local storage. Preferably, the memory has program code for conserving storage space in the local storage by moving the high-use items into, and the low-use items out of, the local storage according to the priority order.

Abstract: A method and system for enhanced electronic delivery and sale of a content item. In order to speed delivery and avoid congestion of a delivery channel, a potential customer is identified and the item delivered prior to solicitation by the customer. Delivery is at a time when communication resources available prior to a critical time of peak demand. Delivery of the item may be enhanced via multicasting. Sale of the item is encouraged through one click context sensitive buying.

Abstract: A peripheral device of a host computer includes a microcontroller and two virtual devices. The first virtual device passes, to the microcontroller, commands of a first command set from any user of the host computer and preferably also commands of a second command set from only privileged users of the host computer. The second virtual device passes, to the microcontroller, commands of the second set from any user of the host computer. In one physical implementation of the invention, the two virtual devices are implemented as separate physical devices, and the second device is connected to an interface to the host computer only if the user is not privileged. In another physical implementation of the invention, the two virtual devices are implemented in a common physical device, and a sector of a memory of the peripheral device is reserved for handling commands of the second set from non-privileged users.

Abstract: A memory device includes a nonvolatile memory, a medium having instructions for operating the memory device and a processor for executing the instructions. The minimal instructions are instructions for storing, in the nonvolatile memory, original pictures corresponding to source pictures received from a camera, and instructions for producing degraded pictures corresponding to the original pictures. The original pictures are stored either encrypted or clear. The memory device is locked after access of the original pictures by an authorized printer but may be unlocked by the camera from which the original pictures were received. The scope of the invention also includes a corresponding method of digital photography.

Abstract: To authorize a transaction between a host and a server, a token is operationally connected to the host. The host receives an identification credential of a user. The identification credential is verified by the token and/or by the server. If the token detects a prescribed human action, the token generates token authentication data and the host sends the token authentication data to the server. Upon receiving the authentication data, the server authenticates the transaction. A device for authenticating a transaction includes a device interface for interacting with a host, a connector for reversibly operationally connecting the device to the host, and a controller that authenticates the transaction only once, contingent on detecting a prescribed anonymous human action. One such human action is providing one or more inputs at the host's user interface synchronously with outputs at the device's user interface.

Abstract: A data storage device that can be reversibly associated with one or more of a plurality of hosts. A “trusted” host on which the device is mounted is allowed access to a secure data area of the device automatically, without the user having to enter a password. Ways in which a host is designated as “trusted” include storing the host's ID in a trusted host list of the device, storing a representation of the host's ID that was encrypted using a trust key of the device in a cookie in the host, or storing a storage password of the device in a password list of the host. Alternatively, an untrusted host is allowed access to the secure data area if a user enters a correct user password.
