  • Patent number: 5942567
Abstract: A resin-molded product includes a phenol-based oxidation inhibitor, and a thiol-based compound. The thiol-based compound reacts chemically with a coloring substance (or a compound having a quinone-type structure) resulting from the phenol-based oxidation inhibitor to interrupt a long conjugated system arising in the coloring substance. As a result, the absorption due to the coloring substance is canceled in the visible light region. Thus, the resin-molded product is inhibited from yellowing.

  • Patent number: 5936023
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of manufacturing a composite material made of a rubber and a clay mineral dispersed uniformly therein. The method proceeds exchanging inorganic ions of the clay mineral with organic onium ions to organize the clay mineral; mixing the organized clay mineral and a process oil and/or a plasticizer; and mixing the rubber material with the mixture of the organized clay mineral and the process oil and/or the plasticizer. Process oil and/or plasticizer are intercalated into the organized clay mineral. As a result, the interlayer distance of the clay mineral is enlarged. The most favorable mode of the present invention is for a barrier material against water, gas and the like and for a rubber material required for an improved mechanical property.

  • Patent number: 5766508
Abstract: This invention provides liquid crystal compositions for light controlling materials of light scattering type having both memory and high speed response characteristics. The composition neither needs a temperature controlling device nor a device for imparting a shear stress as a memory erasing device, because the composition comprises a two-frequency addressing liquid crystal or such liquid crystal with an ionic component. The two-frequency addressing liquid crystal responds to an electric field and exhibits a positive dielectric anisotropy or a negative dielectric anisotropy depending on the frequency region of the electric field. Because the flat shaped particles of the present invention exhibit an affinity with the liquid crystal, the particles are dispersed in the liquid crystal and form liquid crystal domains effectively.

  • Patent number: 5710273
Abstract: A complex crystal is composed of anion of triiodine and cation of a fused compound consisting essentially of at least one nitrogen atom and at least 3 aromatic fused rings. Since the complex crystal has such a stable structure, it shows excellent heat resistance and excellent moisture resisting property. Furthermore, the complex crystal has light-polarizing performance because of an arrangement of the molecular chain of iodine. Moreover, the complex crystal exhibits excellent polarization because of an interaction between the fused compound and iodine. Therefore, the complex crystal is suitable for use as light-adjusting particles of a light valve or a light-adjusting glass.

  • Patent number: 5654368
Abstract: The invention is to provide elastomer-like or rubber-like, recyclable cross-linked polymers capable of being liquefied and re-molded repeatedly without detracting from the physical properties of the polymers. The polymer comprises meltable cross-linked oligomer units and linkage units via which the oligomer units are linked to construct the main chains of the polymer. Each linkage unit in the polymer comprises a chemical bond that can be cleaved and re-formed repeatedly by predetermined treatment by which the bond between monomers in the oligomer units are not cleaved. The method for producing the polymer comprises a step of forming oligomer units by polymerizing monomers, a step of forming linkage units by linking the oligomer units via linkage units and a step of forming cross-linked units between the oligomer units.

  • Patent number: 5643998
Abstract: A recyclable polymer is formed of a plurality of oligomer units obtained by polymerizing a fixed number of monomers, and linkage units for linking the oligomer units through a chemical bond which is different from a bond between monomers constituting the oligomer units, thereby allowing repetitive scission and re-bonding of the linkage units by a predetermined treatment not cleaving the bond between monomers. The recyclable polymer is decomposable into oligomers and the oligomers can be linked again into the original polymer without degrading the quality of the polymer. A process for producing the recyclable polymer, a method for recovering the recyclable polymer, and a method for regenerating the recyclable polymer are also provided.

Abstract: A herapathite has a capillary crystal form in which its iodine atoms are oriented in a major axis direction of the capillary crystal form. The herapathite obtained is expressed by a chemical formula, xC.sub.20 H.sub.24 N.sub.2 O.sub.2.yH.sub.2 SO.sub.4.zHI.sub.3, in which a ratio of a number of the sulfuric acid molecules (y) with respect to a number of the iodine atoms (3z), i.e., (y/3z), is less than 0.5. The production process includes a reaction step, a first separating step, a recrystallizing step and a second separating step. A solvent used in the recrystallizing step is at least one of water and alcohol. A mixing weight ratio of water with respect to alcohol of the solvent is more than 50/50 or less than 10/90. The herapathite does not degrade even after it is heated up to 130.degree. C., and it is applicable to an automobile light shielding glass which should show a high transparency when a voltage is applied thereto.

  • Patent number: 5346984
Abstract: Star-shaped nylons with low melt viscosities and excellent mechanical properties, methods for their preparation, a novel tetrasubstituted carboxylic acid for use as a polymerization core therefor and methods for its preparation are provided.A star-shaped nylon has polymer chains emanating from 3 or more polymerization initiation groups which are substituents bonded to every other or more separated carbon atoms on an aromatic ring of an aromatic compound. The star-shaped nylon is produced by homogeneously mixing the aromatic compound with molten nylon monomer and polymerizing the nylon monomer with the respective polymerization initiation groups as the starting points. A novel tetrasubstituted carboxylic acid having a structure of 3,5,3',5'-biphenyltetracarboxylic acid is useful as a polymerization core for star-shaped nylons.

  • Patent number: 5164460
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a polyimide composite material which comprises a polyimide-containing resin and a layered clay mineral which is intercalated with organic onium ions and dispersed in the polyimide. Owing to the intercalated clay mineral, the composite material has improved gas and water vapor barrier properties and a small thermal expansion coefficient. Disclosed also herein is a process for producing a polyimide composite material which comprises the steps of intercalating a layered clay mineral with organic onium ions, adding by mixing the intercalated clay mineral to a solution of a monomer or prepolymer for polyimide, removing the solvent, and forming a polyimide. This process makes the layered clay mineral miscible with and dispersible in polyimide.
