    Abstract: The axle of a chuck for a spooling machine is mounted in a damped manner within a fixed casing. The axle is rotatably supported in bearings which, in turn, are mounted in annular carriers which are spaced from the casing by a small annular gap. The carriers are supported by resilient pins in elements which serve to mount the bearings in place. In addition, a damping liquid, such as oil, is introduced in to the gap between each carrier and the casing to damp oscillations transmitted from the axle. In one embodiment, a hollow ring filled with damping liquid may be used to center the bearing and to damp the oscillations.

Each package is inspected for deviations from a cylindrical shape. The generation of slippage is promoted at an interface between the contact roller and package. The amount of promoted slippage is changed between the forming of successive packages to change the rate at which the deformations are formed.

In order to maintain plug formation constant, the orifice area is monitored in a sensory manner and the measured signals are used for monitoring purposes as a measured quantity in a control loop, in which the supply of damming back medium, the conveying away speed of the plug, the position of the stuffer box walls, or the supply of delivery medium are used as manipulated variables. The measuring signals produced by monitoring can be compared with thresholds to produce control signals corresponding to the comparison result for activating alarm, warning or stopping elements.

The gas introduced can leave the unit only through a narrow gap. The pressure of the gas is consequently above atmosphere pressure and prevents the entrance of air.
