  • Patent number: 8195099
Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate utilizing different power control algorithms as a function of access terminal speed. For instance, instantaneous Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) reports can be inverted for slow moving access terminals while long-term geometry inversion (e.g., average CQI report inversion) can be utilized for quick moving access terminals. Speed of the access terminal can be estimated based upon time correlation of CQI values. Further, selection of implementing instantaneous CQI inversion or long-term geometry inversion can be based upon the estimated speed of the access terminal.

  • Patent number: 8170572
Abstract: An access node, e.g., base station, determines a configuration of an end node, e.g., wireless terminal, intended to support a specific traffic flow and sends a configuration command to the wireless terminal. A base station may determine one or more parameters associated with classification, queue management, scheduling, and/or automatic repeat request, and then send a configuration command to the wireless terminal instructing it to implement a configuration operation. In some embodiments, a wireless terminal sets the value of an internal parameter to a value directly provided by the base station in a configuration command. In some embodiments, a wireless terminal determines and sets the value of an internal parameter as a function of information included in the configuration command from the base station.

  • Patent number: 8160007
Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate scheduling uplink transmissions. For instance, a time sharing scheme can be utilized such that differing mobile devices can be scheduled to transmit during differing time slots; however, it is also contemplated that a static scheme can be employed. Pursuant to an illustration, an interference budget can be combined with a time varying weighting factor associated with a base station; the weighting factor can be predefined and/or adaptively adjusted (e.g., based upon a load balancing mechanism). Moreover, the weighted interference budget can be leveraged for selecting mobile devices for uplink transmission (e.g., based at least in part upon path loss ratios of the mobile devices). Further, disparate interference budgets can be utilized by differing channels of a sector at a particular time. Also, for example, a base station can assign a loading factor to be utilized by wireless terminal(s) for generating channel quality report(s).

  • Patent number: 8111668
Abstract: In a wireless communication system, there is a method of generating and transmitting signaling information from a user, where user control information may be appended as a header to a data block, and the data block and header may be encoded and transmitted as a signaling message from the user. In a method of scheduling a user for transmitting information, a signaling message, which may include user control information, is received from a user. A scheduling grant message that may include an allocated data rate may be transmitted in response to the received signaling message. The user control information may include one or more of buffer status information of the user, reverse pilot channel transmit power information and data related to a soft handoff (SHO) status of the user.

  • Publication number: 20110312360
Abstract: An apparatus and method are disclosed for determining the optimal bandwidth fractions for all the users in each frequency band in a wireless communication system to maximize the net sum of user utilities. User utilities are functions of average rates of users, where different averaging rules can be used for different users. The standard approach of computing an optimal scheduler strategy involves the solution of a convex optimization problem that has a complexity on the order of O(N3) for N flows. This approach is not feasible for online implementation having a large number of flows. The method of the present work employs an efficient computational algorithm that obtains the optimal bandwidth fractions in O(N) time. This feature makes the method suitable for implementation in wideband cellular systems like LTE (Long Term Evolution) and UMB (Ultra Mobile Broadband).

  • Patent number: 8036151
Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate utilizing power-based rate signaling for uplink scheduling in a wireless communications system. A maximum nominal power (e.g., relative maximum transmit power that may be employed on an uplink) may be known to both a base station and a mobile device. For example, the base station and the mobile device may agree upon a maximum nominal power. According to another example, signaling related to a maximum nominal power for utilization on the uplink may be provided over a downlink. Further, selection of a code rate, modulation scheme, and the like for the uplink may be effectuated by a mobile device as a function of the maximum nominal power. Moreover, such selection may be based at least in part upon an interference cost, which may be evaluated by the mobile device.

  • Patent number: 7990840
Abstract: First and second transmitters transmit signals communicating the same information, e.g., program segment, but at different times. Different carriers may, but need not be, used by the different transmitters. If a wireless terminal can not recover broadcast segment information from one carrier, the wireless terminal can switch to another transmitter and recover the information, e.g., on another carrier, since the broadcasts are intentionally offset in time. In some embodiments, the timing is offset such that a single channel receiver is able to recover signals corresponding to the same program segment from two sources, and perform a decoding and information recovery using input from both sources, where recovery using input from a single source is not possible. Symbol level timing synchronization of base stations is not required thereby allowing for simpler implementations and/or lower overhead, as compared to systems which require base stations to be synchronized to the symbol timing level.

  • Publication number: 20110116358
Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate generating and/or analyzing downlink transmission units in OFDM TDD environments. Beacon signals may be selectively inserted within downlink transmission units; for example, the position of Beacon signals may vary from cell to cell. Further, the position may be a function of a characteristic of a cell (e.g., cell identifier) and/or an expected drift. Moreover, a Beacon signal may be interjected at a location in a downlink transmission unit so as to mitigate alignment with disparate Beacon signals in downlink transmission units associated with differing cells. Additionally, an identity of a cell providing downlink transmission units may be determined by analyzing a position of the Beacon signal within the downlink transmission units.

  • Publication number: 20110085611
Abstract: A multi-mode base station includes a transmit standby mode and an active mode. Transmit standby mode of base station operation is a low power/low interference level of operation as compared to active mode. In transmit standby mode at least some of the synchronization signaling such as pilot tone signaling is reduced in power level and/or rate with respect to the active mode. In transmit standby mode, the base station has no active state registered wireless terminals being serviced but may have some sleep state registered wireless terminals being serviced. Mode transitions from active to transmit standby may be in response to: a detected period of inactivity, scheduling information, base station mode change signals, and/or detected wireless terminal state transition. Mode transitions from transmit standby to active may be in response to: scheduling information, access signals, wake-up signals, hand-off signals, wireless terminal state change signals, and/or base station mode change signals.

  • Patent number: 7894468
Abstract: Transmission methods for multicast messages and for signaling message responses thereto in communication systems supporting a multicast mode provide that a number of retransmissions of a multicast message may be changed based on a number of receivers of the message. Signaling messages to the multicast message may be transmitted in response to a fixed number of multicast message transmissions, and receivers that have not received the multicast message after the fixed number of transmissions may request further retransmissions up to an additional given number of times. Further, signaling messages may be transmitted at different times or staggered based on a radio condition of the receivers. For example, a first multicast message may be transmitted, and responses from groups of receivers may be listened to for a given period, after which one of a next multicast message and a portion of the first multicast message may be transmitted to the groups.

  • Patent number: 7853281
Abstract: Power control reports are communicated less frequently than the power control commands. The base station tracks the commands sent to the wireless terminal and estimates the wireless terminal's control channel transmit power. Received power control channel reports are utilized to compare the base station's estimated wireless terminal control channel transmit power to the actual wireless terminal control channel transmit power. An estimate of the error rate of transmitted power control signals is generated based using the tracked power command information and received power report information. Adjustments are performed in the power control command signaling to compensate for estimated error rates.
