Publication number: 20120243412Abstract: A network device implements automatic configuration of Quality of Service (QoS) parameters in response to operator specification of a relatively few and easily understandable “high level” parameters such as, for example, latency requirements or an acceptable rate of packet drops. In one implementation, a network device may receive user preference information that relates to a Quality of Service (QoS) for network traffic passing through the network device and may measure traffic patterns through the network device. The device further generates a configuration template based on the measured traffic patterns and on the user preference information transmit the data in an order of transmission that is prioritized according to a bandwidth allocation policy defined by the configuration template.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 31, 2012Publication date: September 27, 2012Applicant: Juniper Networks, Inc.Inventors: Sreenivas Voruganti, Ashish Pal, Balaji Murali, Shankar Ramanathan, Rahul Jain

Publication number: 20120242840Abstract: Disclosed are methods for using face-recognition software to enable a communicative act. For example, a user points the camera on his device at a friend. Software analyzes the image produced by the camera, detects the friend's face, and recognizes the friend. The recognized face is then associated with a profile, and an address for the friend is retrieved from the profile. The address can be used in communicating with the friend. The image containing the face may be retrieved by the user's device from a remote source. Aspects of the present invention are directed toward any type of communicative act. The communicative act need not be directed toward the friend whose face was recognized. For example, when that friend's profile is retrieved, it can be searched for a reference to another person, and the communicative act is then directed to that other person.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 24, 2011Publication date: September 27, 2012Applicant: MOTOROLA MOBILITY, INC.Inventors: Juana E. Patent number: 8272392Abstract: A method of controlling a main fluid in a conduit using a microvalve is described. The microvalve includes a corresponding actuation aperture in an actuation aperture layer. A control fluid flows through the actuation aperture in response to an electric field applied via a charge distribution near an actuation aperture layer. In one embodiment, the electric field may adjust the opening and closing of the actuation aperture thereby controlling the flow of the control fluid. In a second embodiment, the control fluid is an electrorheological fluid where the electric field controls the viscosity of the ER fluid, thereby controlling fluid flow through the actuation aperture. In both embodiments the flow of the control fluid controls stretching of a flexible membrane into and out of the conduit, thereby controlling the flow of the main fluid by opening or closing the conduit.Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 2010Date of Patent: September 25, 2012Assignee: Palo Alto Research Center IncorporatedInventors: Ashish Pattekar, Eugene M. Patent number: 8270411Abstract: Embodiments disclosed herein provide systems and methods that allocate bandwidth to a mobile device based on the quantity of dormancy transitions performed by the mobile device. In a particular embodiment, an access node exchanges communications with a mobile device over a wireless link during an initial period of time. A control system determines the quantity of dormancy transitions by the mobile device during the initial period of time. After the initial period of time, the control system receives an access request from the mobile device to access the wireless link. The control system determines a bandwidth allocation on the wireless link for the mobile device based on the quantity of transitions that occurred during the initial period of time. The access node can then exchange data communications with the mobile device over the wireless link based on the bandwidth allocation.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 2009Date of Patent: September 18, 2012Assignee: Sprint Communications Company L.P.Inventors: Anthony Kit-yui Leung, Ashish Bhan, Jasinder Pal Singh, Maulik K. Patent number: 8266407Abstract: A memory controller writes to a virtual address associated with data residing within an asymmetric memory component of main memory that is within a computer system and that has a symmetric memory component, while preserving proximate other data residing within the asymmetric memory component. The symmetric memory component within the main memory of the computer system is configured to enable random access write operations in which an address within a block of the symmetric memory component is written without affecting the availability of other addresses within the block of the symmetric memory component during the writing of that address. The asymmetric memory component is configured to enable block write operations in which writing to an address within a region of the asymmetric memory component affects the availability of other addresses within the region of the asymmetric memory component during the block write operations involving the address.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 2011Date of Patent: September 11, 2012Assignee: Virident Systems Inc.Inventors: Vijay Karamcheti, Kenneth A. Publication number: 20120226963Abstract: Bad block management for flash memory including a method for storing data. The method includes receiving a write request that includes write data. A block of memory is identified for storing the write data. The block of memory includes a plurality of pages. A bit error rate (BER) of the block of memory is determined and expanded write data is created from the write data in response to the BER exceeding a BER threshold. The expanded write data is characterized by an expected BER that is lower than the BER threshold. The expanded write data is encoded using an error correction code (ECC). The encoded expanded write data is written to the block of memory.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 4, 2011Publication date: September 6, 2012Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: John A.
