  • Publication number: 20120102481
Abstract: A distributed application may be updated by using information provided by the application to determine grouping, sequencing, and whether or not to advance an update sequence. The application may provide input to an update sequence, and may cause the update sequence to repair one or more replicas prior to updating. The update mechanism may be used to change the distributed application topology as well as make changes to the application executable code, application configuration, quest operating system, virtual machine, and host systems, among others. In some cases, the distributed application may use a quorum to determine which version is current, and the quorum may change during the update process.

  • Publication number: 20120102043
Abstract: A data processing system establishes a mapping between each of a plurality of plurality of internal data sources within a service organization and a respective one of multiple service quality factors. The data processing system determines a mathematical transformation of internal service quality data obtained from the plurality of internal data sources to obtain a customer satisfaction value. The data processing system estimates and reports a service quality delivered by the service organization by applying the mathematical transformation to at least some of the internal service quality data obtained from the plurality of internal data sources.

  • Patent number: 8165406
Abstract: An interactive concept learning image search technique that allows end-users to quickly create their own rules for re-ranking images based on the image characteristics of the images. The image characteristics can include visual characteristics as well as semantic features or characteristics, or may include a combination of both. End-users can then rank or re-rank any current or future image search results according to their rule or rules. End-users provide examples of images each rule should match and examples of images the rule should reject. The technique learns the common image characteristics of the examples, and any current or future image search results can then be ranked or re-ranked according to the learned rules.

  • Patent number: 8166101
Abstract: Several embodiments of the present invention comprise a storage platform that provides a synchronization service that (i) allows multiple instances of the storage platform (each with its own data store) to synchronize parts of their content according to a flexible set of rules, and (ii) provides an infrastructure for third parties to synchronize the data store of the storage platform of the present invention with with other data sources that implement proprietary protocols. In various embodiments, storage-platform-to-storage-platform synchronization occurs among a group of participating “replicas.” For example, it may be desirable to provide synchronization between the data store of the storage platform with another remote data store under the control of another instance of the storage platform, perhaps running on a different computer system.

  • Publication number: 20120096328
Abstract: Multi-write endurance and error control coding of non-volatile memories including a method for receiving write data and a write address of a memory page in a memory. The write data is partitioned into a plurality of sub-blocks, each sub-block including q bits of the write data. Error correction bits are generated at the computer in response to the sub-blocks and to an error correction code (ECC). At least one additional sub-block containing the error correction bits are appended to the partitioned write data and a write word is generated. The write word is generated by performing for each of the sub-blocks: selecting a codeword such that the codeword encodes the sub-block and is consistent with current electrical charge levels of the plurality of memory cells associated with the memory page; concatenating the selected codewords to form the write word; and writing the write word to the memory page.

  • Patent number: 8160130
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method, system and computer program product for the predictive encoding of digital video sequences. The objectives of the invention are accomplished by dynamically determining the resolution of a current frame being encoded and outputting the determination. The determination process is based on statistical and coding information of a plurality of frames, including at least one previous frame and the current frame. Further, general encoding parameters and the encoding parameters of a current frame at a chosen resolution are determined, wherein the encoding parameter selection step takes into account the determination of the dynamic resolution determination step in determining the encoding parameters.

  • Publication number: 20120089694
Abstract: A TCP/IP processor and data processing engines for use in the TCP/IP processor is disclosed. The TCP/IP processor can transport data payloads of Internet Protocol (IP) data packets using an architecture that provides capabilities to transport and process Internet Protocol (IP) packets from Layer 2 through transport protocol layer and may also provide packet inspection through Layer 7. The engines may perform pass-through packet classification, policy processing and/or security processing enabling packet streaming through the architecture at nearly the full line rate. An application running on an initiator or target can in certain instantiations register a region of memory, which is made available to its peer(s) for access directly without substantial host intervention through RDMA data transfer.

  • Publication number: 20120089681
Abstract: A system and a method are disclosed for recommending electronic messages in a message sharing system. Users can post messages to the message sharing system. These messages from posting users are received by the system and sent to receiving users that have subscribed to the posting users. The receiving users interact with the messages in various ways, such as by sharing the messages with other users. Interaction information is received for each of the electronic messages. The interaction information includes an indication of the number of interactions with the electronic message by receiving users. A score is determined for each electronic message based on the interaction information. Electronic messages are selected for being recommended to a user or a group of users based on the scores. The recommendations are then sent to the users, enabling users to better focus their attention on messages that are likely to be interesting.

  • Patent number: 8154275
Abstract: An apparatus and method for testing sense amplifier threshold voltages on an integrated circuit includes one or more sense amplifier modules each including a number of sense amplifier circuits, a voltage generator unit, and detection logic. The voltage generator unit may select a differential voltage to supply to at least some of the sense amplifier circuits, and each sense amplifier circuit may be configured to generate an output value that is dependent upon the applied differential voltage in response to receiving an enable signal. The detection logic may detect and capture an output value of each of the sense amplifier circuits. In one implementation, the voltage generator unit may iteratively select a different differential voltage in response to a control input. Accordingly, the detection logic may capture the output value of the sense amplifiers after each change in differential voltage.

  • Patent number: 8153304
Abstract: The traditional method of building a CFx/current collector/SVO assembly is by the application of a static pressing force. However, the density of the electrode and, particularly the CFx component, can be increase by using a cyclic pressing protocol. That is where the active materials are formed into a blank or contacted to a current collector by the use of at least two pressing events separated by a period when the pressure is removed. Not only does this cyclic pressing protocol increase the density of the CFx material, it also provides an electrode that is relatively flat, and not cupped. Conventional pressing techniques often result in badly cupped electrodes, especially when disparate active materials are contacting opposite sides of the current collector. Cupping consequently reduces the effective volumetric energy density of the electrode or necessitates the addition of a process step of flattening of the cathode, if at all possible.

  • Patent number: 8156288
Abstract: Main memory is managed by receiving a command from an application to read data associated with a virtual address that is mapped to the main memory. A memory controller determines that the virtual address is mapped to one of the symmetric memory components of the main memory, and accesses memory use characteristics indicating how the data associated with the virtual address has been accessed, The memory controller determines that the data associated with the virtual address has access characteristics suited to an asymmetric memory component of the main memory and loads the data associated with the virtual address to the asymmetric memory component of the main memory. After the loading and using the memory management unit, a command is received from the application to read the data associated with the virtual address, and the data associated with the virtual address is retrieved from the asymmetric memory component.

  • Patent number: 8156302
Abstract: Data stored within symmetric and asymmetric memory components of main memory is integrated by identifying a first data as having access characteristics suitable for storing in an asymmetric memory component. The first data is included among a collection of data to be written to the asymmetric memory component. An amount of data is identified within the collection of data to be written to the asymmetric memory component. The amount of data is compared within the collection of data to a volume threshold to determine whether a block write to the asymmetric memory component is justified by the amount of data. If justified, the collection of data is loaded to the asymmetric memory component.
