  • Publication number: 20050249181
Abstract: To allow a receiving entity to derive a longer channel estimate while limiting overhead, a transmitting entity transmits a pilot on different groups of subbands in different time intervals. N subbands in the system are arranged into M non-overlapping groups. Each group includes P=N/M subbands that are uniformly distributed across the N subbands. The transmitting entity transmits the pilot on a different subband group in each time interval, and selects all M subband groups in M time intervals based on a pilot staggering pattern. The receiving entity derives (1) an initial impulse response estimate with P channel taps based on the pilot received on one subband group and (2) two longer impulse response estimates with different lengths used for data detection and time tracking. Each longer impulse response estimate may be derived by filtering initial impulse response estimates for a sufficient number of subband groups using a time-domain filter.

  • Publication number: 20050248878
Abstract: Systems and apparatus are described for modifying fluid flow in a hard disk drive system to reduce cross-track motion. The systems and methods provide advantages because they include at least one flow modification element. In some embodiments, the flow modification system comprises a set of approximately parallel combs occupying a portion of the space present in between the disks in the hard disk drive system. The combs change the flow pattern of the fluid and act as a momentum channeling mechanism relative to the actuator assembly and suspension assemblies resulting in a considerable reduction in track misregistration error. Various embodiments of the invention include baffle-integrated combs, fixture-integrated combs, contoured enclosure surfaces, and enclosure attached combs.

  • Publication number: 20050250538
Abstract: The present invention provides a system, a method and a computer program product for provisioning Virtual PIN pads on mobile devices, and for enabling customers to make payments using the provisioned Virtual PIN pads for the purchased goods and services. The system comprises a Virtual PIN pad and a transaction backend module. The Virtual PIN pad is a software emulation of a PIN Entry Device (PED) and is provisioned on the mobile device securely with all requisite keys and certificates, while conforming to all security standards of the payment domain. The transaction backend connects the Virtual PIN pad to a payment institution. The customer can make a payment by entering an account identifier card's PIN into the Virtual PIN pad. The Virtual PIN pad encrypts the entered PIN using certified security mechanisms, and transmits it over a secure channel to the payment institution for verification and payment authorization, via the transaction backend.

  • Publication number: 20050250644
Abstract: A method for low-cost arsenic removal from drinking water using chemically prepared bottom ash pre-treated with ferrous sulfate and then sodium hydroxide. Deposits on the surface of particles of bottom ash form of activated iron adsorbent with a high affinity for arsenic. In laboratory tests, a miniscule 5 grams of pre-treated bottom ash was sufficient to remove the arsenic from 2 liters of 2400 ppb (parts per billion) arsenic-laden water to a level below 50 ppb (the present United States Environmental Protection Agency limit). By increasing the amount of pre-treated bottom ash, even lower levels of post-treatment arsenic are expected. It is further expected that this invention supplies a very low-cost solution to arsenic poisoning for large population segments.

  • Patent number: 6962849
Abstract: A technique for forming at least part of an array of a dual bit memory core is disclosed. Spacers are utilized in the formation process to reduce the size of buried bitlines in the memory, which is suitable for use in storing data for computers and the like. The smaller (e.g., narrower) bitlines facilitate increased packing densities while maintaining an effective channel length between the bitlines. The separation between the bitlines allows dual bits that are stored above the channel within a charge trapping layer to remain sufficiently separated so as to not interfere with one another. In this manner, one bit can be operated on (e.g., for read, write or erase operations) without substantially or adversely affecting the other bit. Additionally, bit separation is preserved and leakage currents, cross talk, as well as other adverse effects that can result from narrow channels are mitigated, and the memory device is allowed to operate as desired.

  • Publication number: 20050243855
Abstract: At a base station receiver in a CDMA wireless communications system, in order to reduce reliance on the parameter values transmitted on a packet data control channel (PDCCH) to properly detect the high speed packet data transmitted on a packet data channel (PDCH) with which the PDCCH is code-division-multiplexed, data detection is performed using different possible values for at least one of the parameters and determining if a data packet derived from the PDCH detected under the different values produces a detected data packet that passes a CRC check. If a data packet derived from the received PDCH using a possible parameter value passes the CRC check, then the data packet is delivered to the output and an ACK is transmitted back to the transmitting mobile terminal.

  • Publication number: 20050243936
Abstract: In a wireless communication network, the location of an addressable receiver relative to the locations of a plurality of addressable sources of electromagnetic radiation is found using probabilistic models of the signal strength measured at the addressable receiver. The inventive method provides location determination on a finer spatial scale than was heretofore available. A region of interest is calibrated via a discrete-space radio map storing probability distributions of received signal strength at the measurement locations. The stored probability distributions are compensated for temporal variability and biases, such as through temporal correlations of the sampled received signal strength.

  • Patent number: 6961304
Abstract: The code space associated with the communication system is divided into at least two subspaces where each subspace is assigned to a different mode of operation. In one mode, such as a voice mode, each user is given full time access to a portion of the subspace associated with that mode of operation. In a second mode, such as a data mode, each user uses the entire subspace associated with that mode on a time shared basis. Additionally, in-sector handoffs from one Walsh code to another are used to more efficiently distribute the code space.

  • Publication number: 20050240349
Abstract: A method and apparatus are useful for decomposing a complex distribution of data by modeling the complex distribution as a sum of discrete simple distributions, and processing the simple distributions independently. The independent processing enables the complex distribution to be reconstructed without the simple distributions that are concluded to be spurious. The simple distributions preferably include one or more statistical distributions that are subject to being characterized by a reduced data set for efficient communication and reconstruction of the complex distribution. The modeling and processing steps preferably employ one or more evolutionary algorithms.

  • Patent number: 6956718
Abstract: A slider is formed of an air bearing surface coated with a wear limiting coating that substantially limits surface wear of the air bearing surface encountered in proximity recording. The wear limiting coating is comprised of a wear inhibiting layer formed on the air bearing surface and a sacrificial layer formed on the wear inhibiting layer. The two coatings of the wear limiting coating have different mechanical properties so that the sacrificial layer is burnished, exposing the wear inhibiting layer. This design substantially limits the surface wear of the air bearing surface typically encountered in proximity recording, resulting in less debris accumulation, which could otherwise adversely affect the performance of the proximity recording head. This self-limiting burnishing action overcomes the flying height variation due to manufacturing tolerances and provides extremely small and uniform magnetic spacing, which greatly enhances the proximity recording.
