  • Publication number: 20110069576
Abstract: A barrel alignment structure for a pair of barrel sections each defining an end surface configured to abut each other is disclosed. The barrel alignment structure comprises of a plurality of alignment pins distributed on the end surface of the first barrel section. The barrel alignment structure further comprises of a corresponding number of slots defined on the end surface of the second barrel section, each slot configured to receive one alignment pin, wherein the slot has a width substantially equal to that of the alignment pin and a length larger than the width of the alignment pin permitting relative thermal expansion between the pair of barrel sections. An extruder barrel section is also disclosed. The extruder barrel section defining an end surface configured to abut the end surface of another extruder barrel section. The extruder barrel section comprises of a plurality of alignment pins distributed on its end surface.

  • Publication number: 20110070324
Abstract: A system for clamping together a pair of extruder barrel sections of an extruder is disclosed. The system comprises of a clamp that includes an upper arm, and a lower arm connected to the upper arm at one edge of the upper arm. The upper and lower arms cooperating to define a recess configured to receive a pair of extruder barrel sections. The clamp further includes a locking structure configured to lock the upper arm to the lower arm with the pair of extruder barrel sections therebetween. The system further comprises of a support structure for the clamp that includes a bracket connected to the clamp and a column connected to a base of the extruder. The bracket and column are connected to each other such that relative movement between the bracket and the column is permitted axially along the extruder barrels sections. An extruder is also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20110063939
Abstract: An extruder barrel section is disclosed. The extruder barrel section comprises of a first barrel pad and a second barrel pad. The first and second barrel pad co-operating to define a recess configured to receive an extruder liner. The length of the first and second barrel pad is less than the length of the extruder liner such that the extruder liner defines an end surface that projects beyond the extruder barrel section on at least one side. The end surface is configured to abut the end surface of another extruder liner. The extruder barrel section further comprises of a locking structure configured to lock the first barrel pad to the second barrel pad with the extruder liner therebetween.

  • Publication number: 20110063940
Abstract: An extruder capable of improved mixing is disclosed. The extruder comprises of a housing having at least two cylindrical housing bores, each housing bore having an axis disposed parallel to the other axis. The extruder further comprises of at least a first screw shaft and a second screw shaft being disposed in the first and second housing bores. The first and second screw shaft being provided with extruder processing elements that defines a mixing zone. The first and second screw each having extruder D and a screw root diameter d. The first and second screw shaft each having a volumetric ratio of at least 1.4 wherein the volumetric ratio is defined by the extruder diameter D divided by the screw inner diameter d.

  • Publication number: 20080056058
Abstract: An embodiment of the invention is a twin-screw device for an extruder system that includes a first shaft, a second shaft, a first intake element coupled to the first shaft and including a first flight, and a second intake element coupled to the second shaft adjacent the first intake element and including a second flight. The first flight and the second flight are adapted to cooperatively act as a positive displacement pump to convey material when the first intake element and the second intake element are rotated in the same direction. This action, which is a function of the rotational speed of the intake elements, transforms the use of the extruder system from “feed limited” to “torque limited”.
