Publication number: 20250138316Abstract: In an example method for forming a variable optical viewing optics assembly (VOA) for a head mounted display, a prepolymer is deposited onto a substrate having a first optical element for the VOA. Further, a mold is applied to the prepolymer to conform the prepolymer to a curved surface of the mold on a first side of the prepolymer and to conform the prepolymer to a surface of the substrate on a second side of the prepolymer opposite the first side. Further, the prepolymer is exposed to actinic radiation sufficient to form a solid polymer from the prepolymer, such that the solid polymer forms an ophthalmic lens having a curved surface corresponding to the curved surface of the mold, and the substrate and the ophthalmic lens form an integrated optical component. The mold is released from the solid polymer, and the VOA is assembled using the integrated optical component.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 31, 2022Publication date: May 1, 2025Inventors: Bach Nguyen, Vikramjit Singh, Ravi Kumar Komanduri, Jason Allen Shultz, Ryan Jason Ong, Matthew Traub, Frank Y. Patent number: 12238446Abstract: The techniques described herein implement an automated frame skipping approach used to generate a reduced set of frames for processing. In one example, the automated frame skipping approach is used to more efficiently generate a stitched map of a geographical area being surveilled by an aerial vehicle, such as an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). A stitched map is an image mosaic that is created using the reduced set of frames such that the geographical area being surveilled by the aerial vehicle is accurately depicted.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 2022Date of Patent: February 25, 2025Assignee: MICROSOFT TECHNOLOGY LICENSING, LLCInventors: Vanshika Shyamala Reddy, Nicholas Patrick Skacel, Son Bach Nguyen

Publication number: 20240402512Abstract: An eyewear display includes a frame comprising two lens rims and a nose bridge, a first lens rim of the two lens rims holding a lens stack including a first lens (e.g., a world-side lens) and a waveguide. A detachable rim piece is attached to the first lens rim, and, upon being detached from the first lens rim, the detachable rim piece exposes a loading cavity housing a lens retention component. The lens retention component is removable from the loading cavity to insert a second lens with a vision correction prescription within the lens stack of the first lens rim. The lens retention component is then re-inserted into the loading cavity to fix the second lens (e.g., an eye-side lens) into the lens stack of the first lens rim. The detachable rim piece is then re-attached to cover the loading cavity and the lens retention component.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 2, 2023Publication date: December 5, 2024Inventors: Bach Nguyen, Nabila Zaman, Geoffrey Gudgeon, Joshua Moore, Charles R. Schabacker

Publication number: 20240402513Abstract: An augmented reality (AR) or mixed reality (MR) eyewear display includes a frame with two lens rims. One of or both of the lens rims include eye-side lens installment features to remove or insert an eye-side lens into the lens rim. The lens rim includes a lens retention ring that extends around the lens rim between two ends of the lens retention ring positioned at a first side of the lens rim. The lens retention ring is configurable in an open state to remove or insert an eye-side lens in the first lens rim, and in a closed state to fix the eye-side lens in the first lens rim, wherein the two ends are farther apart from one another in the open state than in the closed state.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 5, 2023Publication date: December 5, 2024Inventors: Charles R. Schabacker, Bach Nguyen, William Kinzy Jones, JR., Nabila Zaman

Publication number: 20240168300Abstract: Embodiments of this disclosure provides systems and methods for displays. In embodiments, a display system includes a frame, an eyepiece coupled to the frame, and a first adhesive bond disposed between the frame and the eyepiece. The eyepiece can include a light input region and a light output region. The first adhesive bond can be disposed along a first portion of a perimeter of the eyepiece, where the first portion of the perimeter of the eyepiece borders the light input region such that the first adhesive bond is configured to maintain a position of the light input region relative to the frame.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 11, 2022Publication date: May 23, 2024Inventors: Stephen Richard RUGG, Ali KARVASI, Jason Donald MARENO, Bach NGUYEN, Philip F. Patent number: 11624929Abstract: An open cell foam is used to create a seal between a camera and a shell piece. The shell piece, camera, seal and a transparent window form a closed front cavity. Because the cavity is closed, dust can remain away from a lens of the camera.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 2019Date of Patent: April 11, 2023Assignee: Magic Leap, Inc.Inventors: Michael Derek Abbott, Aaron Mark Schuelke, Alejandro Lopez, Bach Nguyen

Patent number: 11624919Abstract: An example head-mounted display device includes a light projector, an optical assembly arranged to direct light from a light projector to a user, and an actuator module. The optical assembly includes a variable focus lens assembly including a rigid refractive component, a shaper ring defining an aperture, and a flexible lens membrane between the shaper ring and the rigid refractive component and covering the aperture. The refractive component, the shaper ring, and the lens membrane are arranged along an axis. The refractive component and the lens membrane define a chamber containing a volume of fluid. The actuator module is configured to adjust an optical power of the variable focus lens by moving the shaper ring relative to the refractive component along the axis, such that a curvature of the lens membrane in the aperture is modified.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 2020Date of Patent: April 11, 2023Assignee: Magic Leap, Inc.Inventors: Timothy Mark Dalrymple, David Tinch, Michael Anthony Klug, Clinton Carlisle, Jason Donald Mareno, Arno Leon Konings, Christopher Peter Couste, Charles Robert Schabacker, Bach Nguyen, Christopher John Laning, Roman Patscheider
