  • Publication number: 20010050978
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed, which include an arrangement of message boxes that can be readily accessed by users from different communication networks. The storage of messages addressed to a user can reside on nodes at various locations. The location of the messages at each instant is controlled by a service computer or “Personal Assistant”. As such, the storage and retrieval of such a message can be described as a type of “meeting,” whereby simultaneous connectivity between the attending message sender and intended recipient is not required.

  • Patent number: 6272214
Abstract: One or more unique identifiers are created which are associated directly with an upcoming telemeeting. For example, a unique identifier can be a preselected telephone number in a PSTN, or a URL that identifies an address on the World Wide Web. In one embodiment, a telemeeting is administered automatically under the control of a communications network's service node. Intended participants are invited to the meeting by including the unique identifier along with a notification message, such as, for example, in a facsimile message, e-mail message, page message, voice mail message, or bulletin board announcement. Using the unique identifier and suitable terminal equipment, any recipient of the notification message can call the telephone number (or click on the URL). In response to such a call, the service node generates and distributes to the recipient caller a personal reference, which is a unique telephone number (or URL address).

  • Patent number: 6208959
Abstract: A digital input symbol is transmitted to a receiver by determining one or more formant frequencies that correspond to the digital input symbol. In one embodiment, a pre-programmed addressable memory is used to map the set of possible digital input symbols onto a set of corresponding speech units, each comprising a superposition of one or more formant frequencies. A signal is then generated having the speech units. The signal is supplied for transmission over a voice channel. This may include supplying the signal to a voice coder prior to transmission. In another aspect of the invention, a forward error correction code (FEC) is determined for the digital input symbol, and the one or more speech units are modified as a function of the forward error correction code. In this way, the FEC may also be transmitted with the encoded input symbol. The modification may affect any of a number of attributes of the speech units, including a volume attribute and a pitch attribute.

  • Patent number: 6115613
Abstract: Mobile radio telephone service is provided to a plurality of members of a subscriber group. Members of the subscriber group, which may comprise, for example, members of a family or employees of a small business, share a single subscription to the mobile radio telephone network which subscription limits the number of traffic channels which can be simultaneously occupied by the members. The group subscription avoids each of the individual members having to have a separate mobile radio system subscription and at the same time allows the network operator to spread subscriber traffic over a larger period of time during the day.

  • Patent number: 5966660
Abstract: A subscriber associated with a private branch exchange (PBX) terminal without a Direct-Inward-Dialing (DID) line establishes a first call connection with a particular service node via a mobile station. The subscriber then instructs the service node to originate a second call connection from the service node towards the PBX serving said subscriber. The first and second call connections are interfaced to enable the subscriber to communicate with a PBX operator answering the second call connection. The subscriber then instructs the operator to forward the received call to the subscriber's PBX terminal. Thereafter, the subscriber instructs the service node to originate a third call connection towards a particular called party terminal. The established third call connection is interfaced with the second call connection to enable the subscriber to communicate with the called party subscriber terminal via the PBX terminal. The first call connection with the mobile station is terminated.

  • Patent number: 5903833
Abstract: A mobile telephone is used to control the routing of an incoming or outgoing call in a mobile communications network. A number of registration devices having low energy transmitters are strategically located throughout the coverage area of the mobile communications network. Each registration device is associated with a number of nearby fixed telephones. As the mobile terminal enters the coverage area of a registration device, the mobile telephone receives a registration signal from the registration device. At the onset of a call, the mobile terminal displays a list of the fixed telephones to a user. The user inputs a preference to the mobile terminal to receive or make the incoming or outgoing call via one of the nearby fixed telephones or the mobile terminal. The mobile terminal transmits the preference to a service node, which sets up and appropriately routes the call. The mobile terminal thus remotely controls the routing of the incoming or outgoing call.

  • Patent number: 5680440
Abstract: A mobile radio network includes a number of mobile radio systems, each having a mobile radio services switching center which conveys calls between a number of cordless subscribers and a public switched telephone network which is common to the mobile radio systems which convey calls between a number of cordless subscribers, and a public switched telephone network which is common to the mobile radio systems which convey calls between wire-connected subscribers and also to the cordless subscribers via the mobile radio switching centers. If a cordless subscriber has roamed from its home system to a visitor system, a call from a third system can be transferred generally over the home system and the public network to the subscriber.
