Patent number: 8539161Abstract: Retrieving content items based on a social distance between a user and content providers. The social distance is determined based on, for example, user interaction with the content providers. The content providers are ranked, for the user, based on the determined social distance. Prior to a request from the user, the content items are pre-fetched based on the ranked content providers and constraints such as storage space, bandwidth, and battery power level of a computing device of the user. In some embodiments, additional content items are retrieved, or retrieved content items are deleted, as a variable-size cache on the computing device fills or changes size.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 2009Date of Patent: September 17, 2013Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Bo Lu, Raghavendra Malpani, Joseph A. Publication number: 20130143326Abstract: Thin parylene C membranes having smooth front sides and ultrathin regions (e.g., 0.01 ?m to 5 ?m thick) interspersed with thicker regions are disclosed. The back sides of the membranes can be rough compared with the smooth front sides. The membranes can be used in vitro to grow monolayers of cells in a laboratory or in vivo as surgically implantable growth layers, such as to replace the Bruch's membrane in the eye. The thin regions of parylene are semipermeable to allow for proteins in serum to pass through, and the thick regions give mechanical support for handling by a surgeon. The smooth front side allows for monolayer cell growth, and the rough back side helps prevents cells from attaching there.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 20, 2012Publication date: June 6, 2013Applicants: University of Southern California, California Institute of TechnologyInventors: Yu-Chong Tai, Bo Lu, Mark Humayun

Patent number: 8265606Abstract: Targeted advertisements to social contacts is described. In embodiment(s), social contacts can be correlated based on messaging interactions between mobile communication devices that are associated with the social contacts. Feedback about an advertisement can be received from mobile communication devices that are associated with the social contacts, and the advertisement can then be targeted to one or more of the social contacts based on the feedback about the advertisement.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 2008Date of Patent: September 11, 2012Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Vishal V. Publication number: 20120197030Abstract: The current invention relates to the structure, synthesis of dialkyl(2,4,6- or 2,6-alkoxyphenyl)phosphine or its tetrafluoroborate, as well as its applications in the palladium catalyzed carbon-chlorine bond activation for Suzuki coupling reactions and carbon-nitrogen bond formation reactions. The dialkyl(2,4,6- or 2,6-alkoxyphenyl)phosphine or its tetrafluoroborate could coordinate with the palladium catalyst to activate the inert carbon-chlorine bond highly selectively and catalyze Suzuki coupling reaction with arylboronic acid or carbon-nitrogen bond formation reaction with organic amines. The current invention uses only one step to synthesize dialkyl(2,4,6- or 2,6-alkoxyphenyl)phosphine and its tetrafluoroborate is stable in the air. Compared with known synthetic routes of ligands used in activating carbon-chlorine bonds, the method of current invention is short, easy to operate.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 21, 2009Publication date: August 2, 2012Applicant: Zhejiang UniversityInventors: Shengming Ma, Bo Lü, Chunling Fu

Patent number: 7891260Abstract: An occupant presence sensor apparatus disposed in a seat includes first and second substantially non-compliant force translation plates generally parallel to the seating surface of the seat, an elastomeric mat disposed between the first and second force translation plates, and a switch mechanism disposed between the first and second force translation plates within an opening formed in the elastomeric mat. The elastomeric mat includes a distributed array of hollow protuberances that extend toward and contact the force translation plates, and the mat has a stiffness that normally provides a clearance between the switch mechanism and one of the force translation plates. When an occupant of specified or higher weight sits on the seating surface, the protuberances collapse and the force translation plates activate the switch mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 2009Date of Patent: February 22, 2011Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Mark C. Publication number: 20100198464Abstract: A diagnosable magnetic switch assembly and method for determining a seat occupant. A network in the assembly includes a resistor in series with a magnetic switch, and a resistor in parallel with the series combination. Such an arrangement provides distinct assembly resistance values when the magnetic switch is open or closed, and thereby provides a means for diagnosing the operational state of the diagnosable magnetic switch assembly. The diagnosable magnetic switch assembly may be included in a seat occupant indicator system that embeds the seat occupant indicator system and a magnet in a cushion of a seat assembly. When the seat assembly is occupied, the magnet is separated from the seat occupant indicator system by a sufficient distance so the seat occupant indicator system is in an open state. When an occupant sits in the seat assembly, the magnet and the seat occupant indicator system are brought closer together so that the magnetic field operate the seat occupant indicator system to a closed state.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 29, 2010Publication date: August 5, 2010Applicant: DELPHI TECHNOLOGIES, INC.Inventors: Randall T.
