  • Publication number: 20210250745
Abstract: Techniques for handling emergency calls in a fifth generation (5G) telecommunication network are discussed herein. Some 5G-compatible user equipment (UEs) support 5G emergency calls, while other 5G-compatible UEs do not support 5G emergency calls. If a UE supports 5G emergency calls, the 5G telecommunication network may instruct the UE during network registration to use the 5G telecommunication network for any emergency calls attempted later. However, if a UE does not support 5G emergency calls, the 5G telecommunication network may instruct the UE during network registration to instead use Long-Term Evolution (LTE) emergency fallback procedures for emergency calls. Such LTE emergency fallback procedures can cause the 5G telecommunication network to steer the UE to LTE for an emergency call almost immediately after receiving a service request from the UE, even though the 5G telecommunication network itself supports emergency calls.

  • Patent number: 11089527
Abstract: An access network can allocate a bearer for a network service associated with a quality-of-service (QoS) value (QV) and a retention-priority value (RPV), and determine a bearer ID for the service based on the QV, the RPV, and a supplemental priority value (SPV) different from the QV and from the RPV. Upon handover of a terminal, session(s) carried by a bearer allocated by the terminal can be terminated. That bearer can be selected using IDs of the bearers and a comparison function that, given two bearer IDs, determines which respective bearer should be terminated before the other. Upon handover of a terminal to an access network supporting fewer bearers per terminal than the terminal has allocated, a network node can select a bearer based on respective QVs and RPVs of a set of allocated bearers. The network node can deallocate the selected bearer.

  • Publication number: 20210105670
Abstract: Registration of a user equipment (UE) with a circuit-switched (CS) network can be controlled in an “on-demand” fashion by waiting for a trigger event before registering the UE with an available CS network. In some embodiments, CS registration of a UE may be triggered when the mobility management entity (MME) node receives, from the UE, a service request that was sent using Non-Access Stratum (NAS) protocol, such as an extended service request (ESR) or a short message service (SMS) over NAS request. In some embodiments, CS registration of a first UE may be triggered when the MME node receives, from a home subscriber server (HSS), a notification of an incoming session request originating from a second UE to establish a communication session over a CS network with the first UE.

  • Patent number: 10972896
Abstract: Methods, systems, and non-transitory computer readable media for intelligent steering of roaming of user equipment. More particularly, the methods include receiving, from a user equipment (UE) located in a visitor network, a registration message to register with a home network, the registration message including an identifier of the UE. The methods also include querying, by one or more processors, a steering controller using the identifier of the UE to obtain a roaming list customized for the UE. The methods also include pushing, by one or more processors, the roaming list to the UE.

  • Publication number: 20210029617
Abstract: Systems, devices, and techniques described herein relate to migrating a communication session from a path including a stressed user plane function (UPF) to a path including a replacement UPF. A communication session may traverse a first path including the first UPF. After establishing the communication session, the first UPF may be determined to be stressed. In response, the communication session can be proactively migrated to a second path including a second UPF. According to various implementations, the existing communication session can be maintained during the migration, thereby substantially eliminating interruptions caused by the stressed first UPF.

  • Publication number: 20200328904
Abstract: A Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF) can maintain a mapping table that associates gateway identifiers of gateways in a packet core network with corresponding IP address ranges. Based on an IP address of user equipment (UE), the PCRF can identify which of the IP address ranges in the mapping table over the UE's IP address, and which gateway identifier is mapped to that IP address range. The PCRF can accordingly contact the identified gateway to establish a Gx session for the UE with the gateway, such as restoring a previous Gx session or establishing a new Gx session.

  • Patent number: 10687195
Abstract: Multiple timers used by a device during setup of a communication session may include a first timer and a second timer, each configured to expire after different periods of time, and each configured to start in response to the device sending a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) request using a SIP INVITE method. The first timer is stopped on receipt of the first SIP response, which may include a 100. Trying SIP response, while the second timer is stopped on receipt of a non-100 Trying SIP response. If the first timer expires, the device may send an additional SIP request using the SIP INVITE method as a retry mechanism while the second timer continues to run. If the second timer expires, the device may halt the session setup and reattempt using a different type of access network.

  • Patent number: 10681762
Abstract: Multiple communication session requests received by a terminating UE within a period of time can be handled on a last come, first served basis. A terminating UE that is in the process of setting up a first communication session, upon receiving a session request to establish a second communication session, is configured to terminate first setup procedures for the first communication session, and initiate second setup procedures to establish the second communication session. The last come, first served treatment of a subsequent communication session can be implemented unconditionally, or selectively by evaluating whether a condition is met prior to accepting the subsequent communication session before finishing setup procedures for the initial communication session.

  • Publication number: 20200145465
Abstract: When a user equipment (UE) registers with an Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), a serving call session control function (S-CSCF) of the IMS can obtain user profile information associated with the UE from a Home Subscriber Server (HSS). The user profile information may include a priority indicator, such as an indication that a user associated with the UE is a Wireless Priority Services (WPS) user or other high priority user. In that situation, the S-CSCF can inform a proxy call session control function (P-CSCF) of the IMS that the user is a WPS user or other high priority user by sending a dedicated priority message to the P-CSCF, separately from sending a registration confirmation message to the P-CSCF.

  • Patent number: 10638534
Abstract: One or more timers can be used by an originating UE during setup of a communication session. The timer(s) can be triggered by an originating UE sending a request or receiving a response that uses a first signaling protocol. The timer(s) can further be terminated by the originating UE sending a request or receiving a response that uses a second signaling protocol different from the first signaling protocol, so long as the request/response using the second signaling protocol occurs before timeout of the timer(s).

  • Publication number: 20200112872
Abstract: Systems, devices, and techniques described herein relate to intelligently allocating network resources to Quality of Service (QoS)-sensitive data traffic. An example method includes identifying a request to deliver QoS-sensitive services to a User Equipment (UE) over at least one delivery network. The at least one delivery network may include at least one reserved resource and at least one pooled resource. The QoS-sensitive services are determined to be delivered over the at least one pooled resource. In addition, delivery of the QoS-sensitive services is caused over the at least one pooled resource.

  • Patent number: 10602562
Abstract: An originating user equipment (UE) that initiates a communication session as a real time text (RTT)-based communication may be configured to automatically downgrade the communication session in response to identifying one or more attributes of a response to a session request that indicate a communication session cannot be established with a full set of features requested by the user. For example, the originating UE can determine that a response to a session request indicates at least one of (i) an inability to establish the communication session, or (ii) an ability to establish the communication session without support for the exchange of the non-voice content via the RTT media stream. Based on this determination, a communication session can be established that does not support the exchange of the non-voice content via the RTT media stream. In this manner, rich RTT features are sacrificed in order to connect the user.
