    Abstract: An optical reader for reading indicia such as bar codes comprises a first and second light source for generating first and second laser beams. The respective laser sources generate light at different wavelengths and a dichroic filter is provided to allow either source to be used without parallax effects. The laser scanner beam can be used to aim the reader when carrying out field of view reading. The optical reader is further provided with a band-pass filter shaped to match the wave-front of light generated at a given location incident on the filter to reduce the band-pass bandwidth and hence the ambient noise. The shaped band-pass filter can be incorporated in the optical reader dichroic filter arrangement.

By directing the scanning laser beam across the fold mirror, a plurality of scan lines are created, at different distances from the scanner. This provides increased flexibility by extending the scanner's working range. In alternative embodiments, a collector mirror and/or a scanning mirror may be segmented. In addition, beam shaping may be provided by reflecting the beam from one or more aplanar surfaces.

A flexible member, such as a multi-wire, flat, electrical cable is connected to the light emitter. Reciprocation of the light emitter during emission of light by the light emitter causes the light to scan a surface, such as a surface bearing a bar code label. The cable flexes during such reciprocation.

    Abstract: An optical scanning system for reading indicia of differing light reflectivity has an optical scan module which is adapted to be mounted on a finger of a user. A first peripheral module, preferably in the form of a wrist watch, has a receiver which detects the reflected light. A second peripheral module, mounted on the other arm of the user, communicates with the first module by radio frequency transmission. According to other aspects of the invention, the light detector may be mounted in a housing which is separate and part from the optical scan module. According to another aspect, a laser pointer or scanner is mounted to a ring which is arranged to be worn on a single finger of the user.

Laser diodes are characteristically astigmatic, and when passed through a rotationally symmetric lens the beam typically forms a waist both in the x (scanning) direction and in the y (perpendicular) direction. The width of the beam envelope in the x direction is adjusted by means of a conventional lens. The width of the beam envelope in the y direction is adjusted by the use of a non-planar mirror, preferably a cylindrical mirror, as the rotating or oscillating element.

    Abstract: A bar code scanner employs an electronic means for causing the light beam to scan a bar code symbol, rather than using a mechanical device to generate the scan. A linear array of light sources, activated one at a time in a regular sequence, may be imaged upon the bar code symbol to simulate a scanned beam. Instead of a single linear array of light sources, a multiple-line array may be employed, producing multiple scan lines. The multiple scan lines may be activated in sequence, or activated simultaneously (time-division or frequency-division multiplexed. The multiple scan lines can provide signal enhancement, noise reduction or fault correction if directed to the same bar code pattern. Multiple scan lines may be generated using a single light source and a beam splitter, with mechanical scanning, as well as by the sequentially-activated light sources. Multiple simultaneous scan lines may be employed to generate a raster scan at lower mechanical scan frequency.

An optical component disposed adjacent the light source is provided for optically directing the laser beam along a path toward the surface and is capable of controlling and setting the predetermined scanning angle. Furthermore, the optical component may be automatically rotated so as to align the direction of scan with the preferred reading direction of the indicia.

    Abstract: An optical scanner module, for use in a bar code reader, has an electromagnetic coil across which is disposed a thin flexible strip. Mounted to the center of the strip is an optical element, such as a lightweight mirror, and a magnetic element, such as a permanent magnet. When an AC signal is applied to the electromagnetic coil, a varying magnetic field is produced which interacts with the fixed magnetic field of the magnet causing the magnet and mirror assembly to flex the flexible strip (e.g., in a twisting motion), thereby changing the spatial orientation of the mirror. By suitably driving the electromagnetic coil, the mirror can be made to oscillate, thereby converting a laser beam directed onto the mirror into a scanning laser beam. The entire module is compact, inexpensive to manufacture, and robust.
