Patent number: 5591952Abstract: In a bar code reader, a field of view which includes a symbol to be read is imaged upon a light-responsive array such as a CCD imager device. The output of this array is transferred to a memory array to provide a bit-mapped type of binary representation of the image including the symbol. The memory is scanned (instead of the field of view itself being mechanically scanned) to recognize and decode the symbol. Because the angular orientation of the symbol is variable, this binary representation may be interpreted to determine how the memory array is to be scanned to recognize the bar code symbol. For example, the distinctive patterns of characters used in bar codes may be found by scanning the memory and the relative positions of these patterns interpreted to determine the position, size and shape of the symbol in the memory, thereby defining at what angular displacement the memory array need be addressed to traverse the rows of the bar code symbol.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 1995Date of Patent: January 7, 1997Assignee: Symbol TechnologiesInventors: Mark J. Patent number: 5578810Abstract: A system for reading indicia having parts of different light reflectivity, includes a light emitter and optical detector supported by a ring to be worn on a finger of a user. The light emitter generates a scanning light beam which scans the indicia and produces reflected light of variable intensity reflected from the indicia. The optical detector detects the reflected light and produces an electrical signal indicative of the reflected light intensity. The ring is worn in a position such that a light beam emitted by the light emitter is directed away from the user.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 1995Date of Patent: November 26, 1996Assignee: Symbol Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Simon Bard, Boris Metlitsky, Mark Krichever, Jerome Swartz

Patent number: 5565671Abstract: A handheld data entry terminal includes a housing and a scanning head mounted to the housing for pivotal movement between at least first and second reading positions. The scanning head, when actuated, optically scans an encoded symbol and detects light reflected from the encoded symbol while in either of the first and second reading positions. As desired, a terminal user can establish either one of first and second trigger switches mounted to the housing as a scanning head actuating switch, leaving the other of the trigger switches to be established as a shift key for determining the type of characters entered by alphanumeric data entry keys of a keypad also mounted to the housing in conjunction with an LCD display.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1995Date of Patent: October 15, 1996Assignee: Symbol Technologies, Inc.Inventors: David Kirkeby, Boris Metlitsky, Mark Krichever, Jerome Swartz

Patent number: 5545886Abstract: A bar code scanner employs an electronic means for causing the light beam to scan a bar code symbol, rather than using a mechanical device to generate the scan. A linear array of light sources, activated one at a time in a regular sequence, may be imaged upon the bar code symbol to simulate a scanned beam. Instead of a single linear array of light sources, a multiple-line array may be employed, producing multiple scan lines. The multiple scan lines may be activated in sequence, or activated simultaneously (time-division or frequency-division multiplexed. The multiple scan lines can provide signal enhancement, noise reduction or fault correction if directed to the same bar code pattern. Multiple scan lines may be generated using a single light source and a beam splitter, with mechanical scanning, as well as by the sequentially-activated light sources. Multiple simultaneous scan lines may be employed to generate a raster scan at lower mechanical scan frequency.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 1993Date of Patent: August 13, 1996Assignee: Symbol Technologies Inc.Inventors: Boris Metlitsky, Joseph Katz, Emanuel Marom, Dean Gousgounis

Patent number: 5422744Abstract: In order to improve security for holographic labels which are positioned on a substrate base, a bar code symbol with regions of different light reflective properties is holographically recorded on the base. The base may be, for example an information card, such as a credit card, a label, or a container for a product. The bar code symbol can be recorded so that it is visible to the eye in white light (e.g., as a rainbow hologram) or so that it requires an appropriate reference beam for reconstruction. A reading apparatus (e.g., a bar code reader) directs light at the holographic bar code symbol and detects the reflected optical information with a detector such as a CCD array. The reading apparatus can be a stand-alone device or, in the case of a credit card, can be incorporated into a conventional swiper for reading magnetic information on a strip on the card. A non-holographic bar code symbol can also be provided on or near a holographic display element, e.g., a rainbow hologram.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1992Date of Patent: June 6, 1995Assignee: Symbol Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Joseph Katz, Emanuel Marom, Boris Metlitsky, Jerome Swartz, Ynjiun Wang

Patent number: 5414250Abstract: An apparatus and method for reading data in the form of indicia on a surface of a target, the indicia having a preferred reading direction, including a light source for illuminating a portion of the surface to be read with a laser beam in a scanning pattern at a predetermined scanning angle so as to scan spatially adjacent portions of the surface. A detector and a processor is provided that is operative for detecting at least a portion of the light reflected from the indicia and storing representations thereof, and further determining the angular difference between the preferred reading direction and the scanning angle.Type: GrantFiled: January 4, 1993Date of Patent: May 9, 1995Assignee: Symbol Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Jerome Swartz, Boris Metlitsky

Patent number: 5410140Abstract: To reduce the size and weight of an optical scanner, the present invention provides a mirrorless beam scanning unit wherein the light emitter itself moves back and forth. In the preferred embodiments the light emitter is a visible light diode (VLD) mounted on the axis of a rotatable shaft. The VLD emits light in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the shaft. A lever arm attached to the shaft and an induction motor for moving the arm repeatedly rotate the shaft back and forth through a small rotational arc. The mirrorless scanner is mounted on a finger sized ring. This allows a user to wear the miniature optical scanner on a finger. A separate unit houses the other components of the scanning system, such as the analog signal processing circuitry, digitizer, decoder and any necessary interface to a data processing system. The separate unit can be worn on the user's belt or in a pocket, and a cable connects the separate unit to the ring mounted scanner.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1994Date of Patent: April 25, 1995Assignee: Symbol Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Simon Bard, Boris Metlitsky, Mark Krichever, Jerome Swartz
