Publication number: 20230369638Abstract: A constrained, wound lithium-ion battery cell with an internal fuse component that exhibits significant improvements in terms of life-cycle times is provided. Disclosed herein are lithium-ion battery structures and configurations utilizing at least one thin metallized film current collector that provides safety features with low thermal runaway potential, low internal resistance, with a simplified manner of providing external electrical conductivity simultaneously. The provision of a highly constrained and wound structure thereof unexpectedly allows for extended charge/discharge cycle life that is significantly improved in comparison with previous wound lithium-ion battery devices. A range of shear and compression forces accords such results, with such forces permissible through various pathways, including winding curvatures, number of windings within the cell housing, hardness of housing, and structural geometries therein.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 16, 2022Publication date: November 16, 2023Inventors: Brian G. Morin, Carl C. Hu, Drew J. Pereira

Patent number: 11799087Abstract: A lithium battery cell with an internal fuse component and including needed tabs which allow for conductance from the internal portion thereof externally to power a subject device is provided. Disclosed herein are tabs that exhibit sufficient safety levels in combination with the internal fuse characteristics noted above while simultaneously displaying pull strength to remain in place during utilization as well as complete coverage with the thin film metallized current collectors for such an electrical conductivity result. Such tabs are further provided with effective welds for the necessary contacts and at levels that exhibit surprising levels of amperage and temperature resistance to achieve the basic internal fuse result with the aforementioned sufficient conductance to an external device. With such a tab lead component and welded structure, a further improvement within the lithium battery art is provided the industry.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 2021Date of Patent: October 24, 2023Assignee: Soteria Battery Innovation Group, Inc.Inventors: Brian G. Morin, Carl C. Hu

Patent number: 11799125Abstract: Improvements in the structural components and physical characteristics of lithium battery articles are provided. Standard lithium ion batteries, for example, are prone to certain phenomena related to short circuiting and have experienced high temperature occurrences and ultimate firing as a result. Structural concerns with battery components have been found to contribute to such problems. Improvements provided herein include the utilization of thin metallized current collectors (aluminum and/or copper, as examples), high shrinkage rate materials, materials that become nonconductive upon exposure to high temperatures, and combinations thereof. Such improvements accord the ability to withstand certain imperfections (dendrites, unexpected electrical surges, etc.) within the target lithium battery through provision of ostensibly an internal fuse within the subject lithium batteries themselves that prevents undesirable high temperature results from short circuits.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 2020Date of Patent: October 24, 2023Assignee: Soteria Battery Innovation Group, Inc.Inventors: Brian G Morin, Carl C. Patent number: 11482711Abstract: A lithium battery cell with an internal fuse component without any welded tabs present for conductance from the internal portion thereof externally to power a subject device is provided. Disclosed herein are lithium ion (liquid electrolyte) battery configurations utilizing thin metallized film current collectors as conducting tabs that provide full electrical conductivity from one pole to another throughout the internal portions of the battery with sufficient space for liquid electrolyte flow as well. Such thin metallized film current collectors thus provide both safety features with low electrical charge runaway potential, low internal resistance, and high thermal conductivity with a simplified manner of providing external electrical conductivity simultaneously.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 2021Date of Patent: October 25, 2022Assignee: Soteria Battery Innovation Group, Inc.Inventors: Carl C. Patent number: 11171387Abstract: The present invention relates to a microporous polymeric battery separator comprised of a single layer of enmeshed microfibers and nanofibers. Such a separator accords the ability to attune the porosity and pore size to any desired level through a single nonwoven fabric. As a result, the inventive separator permits a high strength material with low porosity and low pore size to levels unattained. The combination of polymeric nanofibers within a polymeric microfiber matrix and/or onto such a substrate through high shear processing provides such benefits, as well. The separator, a battery including such a separator, the method of manufacturing such a separator, and the method of utilizing such a separator within a battery device, are all encompassed within this invention.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 2012Date of Patent: November 9, 2021Assignee: Dreamweaves Intl., Inc.Inventors: Brian G. Publication number: 20210012976Abstract: The capability of directly gelling an electrolyte within a lithium ion (or similar type) battery cell through the reaction of the electrolyte solution with a present battery separator is provided. Such a procedure results generally from the presence of suitable nanofibers within the battery separator structure that exhibit the potential for swelling in the presence of a suitable electrolyte formulation. In this manner, the capability of providing an entrenched gel within the battery separator for longer term viability and electrical generation is possible without externally gelling the electrolyte prior to battery cell introduction. The method of use of such a resultant battery, as well as the battery including such an automatic gelling battery separator/electrolyte combination, are also encompassed within this invention.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 31, 2020Publication date: January 14, 2021Applicant: Dreamweaver International, Inc.Inventor: Brian G. SINGLE-LAYER LITHIUM ION BATTERY SEPARATORS EXHIBITING HIGH LOW-SHRINKAGE RATES AT HIGH TEMPERATURES
Publication number: 20200403202Abstract: An insulating (nonconductive) microporous polymeric battery separator comprised of a single layer of enmeshed microfibers and nanofibers is provided. Such a separator accords the ability to attune the porosity and pore size to any desired level through a single nonwoven fabric. Through a proper selection of materials as well as production processes, the resultant battery separator exhibits isotropic strengths, low shrinkage, high wettability levels, and pore sizes related directly to layer thickness. The overall production method is highly efficient and yields a combination of polymeric nanofibers within a polymeric microfiber matrix and/or onto such a substrate through high shear processing that is cost effective as well. The separator, a battery including such a separator, the method of manufacturing such a separator, and the method of utilizing such a separator within a battery device, are all encompassed within this invention.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 30, 2020Publication date: December 24, 2020Applicant: DREAMWEAVER INTERNATIONAL, INC.Inventor: Brian G.
