  • Patent number: 5854901
Abstract: An IP address is automatically discovered by a network endpoint, such as a PC or router. The endpoint listens for a broadcast network packet or promiscuously listens for a unicast network packet sent from a web browser from a host system. The network packet includes the IP address for the host system and a preselected IP domain name. The IP domain name is used to initiate the address discovery in the endpoint. The IP address from the host system is used by the endpoint as a seed for generating a proposed IP network address. The endpoint then uses an address resolution protocol (ARP) to determine whether the proposed IP address is currently assigned to any other device in the network. If no device in the network responds to the ARP request, the proposed IP address constitutes a unique address on a network segment. Because the proposed address is not used by any other device in the subnetwork, it is self-assigned to the endpoint.

  • Patent number: 5473599
Abstract: A system and protocol are provided for routing data packets from a host on a LAN through a virtual address belonging to a group of routers. The host is configured to point to the virtual address so that the packets it sends out of its LAN are always directed to a virtual router which may be any one of the group of routers. An active router in the group of routers emulates the virtual router. A standby router, also from the group of routers, backs up the active router so that if the active router becomes inoperative, the standby router automatically begins emulating the virtual router. The host router does not know which router from the group is actually handling the data packets it sends. If the standby router becomes inoperative or takes over for the active router, other routers in the group hold an election to determine which of them should take over for the standby router.

  • Patent number: 4780378
Abstract: A relief/check valve for venting an electric storage battery comprising essentially an annular sealing member having an elastomeric skirt engaging the sloping exterior surface of a valve seat. The skirt flares outwardly from the seat in direct proportion to the pressure in the battery such as to prevent excessive build up of pressure in the battery when the gassing rate is high. The skirt quickly returns to a sealing condition when the pressure within the battery drops below the opening pressure of the valve.
