  • Publication number: 20070220867
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for particulate filter regeneration. The apparatus includes a bypass exhaust channel configured to conduct exhaust gasses away from a main exhaust channel and reintroduce the exhaust gasses into the main exhaust channel upstream from a particulate filter, a burner, and a regeneration module configured to monitor exhaust gas variables and divert a portion of the exhaust gasses through the bypass exhaust channel in response to the exhaust gas variables. The system includes a vehicle having an internal combustion engine coupled to a transmission, and the apparatus. The method includes conducting exhaust gasses away from a main exhaust channel and reintroducing the exhaust gasses into the main exhaust channel, raising the temperature of the exhaust gasses, and monitoring exhaust gas variables and selectively diverting a portion of the exhaust gasses through a bypass exhaust channel in response to the exhaust gas variables.

  • Patent number: 6964270
Abstract: A preferred embodiment EGR valve permits exhaust gas to be induced into the intake line downstream of the compressor, while minimizing the need to reduce the size of the turbocharger. The preferred embodiment EGR valve exploits variations around the mean pressure in the EGR passage created by the engine cycle by selectively opening when the pressure in the EGR valve exceeds the pressure in the intake line. Thus, exhaust gas is recirculated even when the engine is running near torque peak. The preferred embodiment EGR valve also exploits the higher mean pressure in the exhaust line relative to the intake line at higher engine speeds by remaining open, in order to minimize the energy consumed in opening and closing the EGR valve.

  • Publication number: 20040102893
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for monitoring vehicular traffic flow in a road network (1) in an area served by a mobile telecommunications device network (7) having a call management system (10) provided with a mobile telecommunications device positioning system (11) providing positional data for active mobile telecommunications devices (12). The method comprises capturing geographical positioning data for individual active devices carried aboard vehicles (12) and converting these into probability vectors representing the likelihood of the vehicle having arrived at any of the possible road components (16) of the road network (7) compatible with the geographical positional data. As the vehicle (12) travels along, this process is repeated and new probability vectors constructed based on the probability of any of the available routes between the new probability vector mad component position and the immediately preceding probability vector road component position.

  • Patent number: 6105555
Abstract: An improved turbocharged internal combustion engine is provided having a system and method for preventing a rapid decrease of turbocharger power during rapid fuel reduction transients in engine operation due to reductions in fuel flow rate to the engine. The engine includes a turbocharger power enhancing system including an exhaust valve control device capable of varying the timing of opening of the engine exhaust valves. The turbocharger power enhancing system also includes a processor which generates a control signal when a reduction in the fuel delivery rate is detected. The control signal operates the exhaust valve control device to advance the timing of opening of the exhaust valves to cause additional exhaust gas to be delivered to the turbine thereby preventing a rapid decrease of compressor speed and preventing compressor surge.

  • Patent number: 4620863
Abstract: A radiation coloration resistant glass is disclosed which is used in a radiation environment sufficient to cause coloration in most forms of glass. The coloration resistant glass includes higher proportions by weight of water and has been found to be extremely resistant to color change when exposed to such radiation levels. The coloration resistant glass is free of cerium oxide and has more than about 0.5% by weight water content. Even when exposed to gamma radiation of more than 10.sup.7 rad, the coloration resistant glass does not lose transparency.

  • Patent number: 3944104
Abstract: A threaded bottle stopper for controlling the release of pressurized gases from a bottle is disclosed. The threaded bottle stopper is used in conjunction with an externally threaded bottle neck and comprises a cap having an internally threaded annular skirt depending downwardly therefrom and a tubular body portion extending downwardly from and integral with the underside of the cap. The outside diameter of the tubular body portion is such to permit insertion thereof within a neck bore of a bottle. The continuous thread on the annular skirt engages a continuous thread on the neck of the bottle where rotation of the threaded stopper in both directions moves the tubular body portion respectively into and out of the neck bore of the bottle. The bottle stopper is provided with means for sealing the discharge opening of the bottle neck.
