  • Patent number: 6057961
Abstract: An optical film is provided which exhibits increased gain at nonnormal angles of incidence and which comprises a disperse phase of polymeric particles disposed within a continuous birefringent matrix. The film is oriented, typically by stretching, in one or more directions. The size and shape of the disperse phase particles, the volume fraction of the disperse phase, the film thickness, and the amount of orientation are chosen to attain a desired degree of diffuse reflection and total transmission of electromagnetic radiation of a desired wavelength in the resulting film.

  • Patent number: 6033662
Abstract: Methods and compositions are disclosed for producing air-activated, i.e., oxygen (O.sub.2) activated, disinfectant-sterilent solutions. Solutions containing a haloperoxidase (i.e., a halide:hydrogen peroxide (H.sub.2 O.sub.2) oxidoreductase, such as myeloperoxidase, eosinophil peroxidase or lactoperoxidase) plus a halide or combination of halides (i.e., chloride, bromide and/or iodide), an oxidase (i.e., a substrate:O.sub.2 oxidoreductase) capable of generating H.sub.2 O.sub.2, and a substrate specific for that oxidase, are separately prepared under aerobic conditions, but all of the component solutions are made anaerobic prior to final combination and mixing. The anaerobic formulations are dispensed into containers capable of maintaining the anaerobic condition (e.g., pressurized canisters). Dispensing the solution at the time of use exposes the formulation to air (i.e., O.sub.2) which activates its disinfectant-sterilent properties. O.sub.2 is the rate limiting component for oxidase generation of H.sub.2 O.

Abstract: A high density linear storage system comprising at least one storage unit mounted to a base frame assembly. The at least one storage unit may include a plurality of shelves or storage compartments for storing files, books, computer printouts and the like. A handle is mounted on an end of the at least one storage unit to facilitate the extension and retraction of the unit. The base frame assembly includes a stationary base frame and a movable carriage. The carriage further comprises a primary frame and an intermediate frame, which telescopically nest within the base frame when in a fully retracted position. Rollers are attached to the frame members of the intermediate frame and are configured to slidably engage channel members of the base frame and the primary frame. Retaining clips are provided to prevent extension of the primary and intermediate frames beyond a predetermined distance. • Patent number: 5999316
Abstract: The present invention provides light valves including polarizing elements in which light transmission can be controlled by rotating at least one of the polarizing elements about an in-plane axis. Although reflective polarizing elements are preferred in devices according to the present invention to reduce the problem of heat build-up, the use of absorptive or other polarizers may also be envisioned. The light valves according to the present invention may find use in any application in which the transmission of light (visible or otherwise) is to be controlled. Examples of specific applications include, but are not limited to: windows, luminaires, skylights, etc.

  • Patent number: 5988835
Abstract: The invention modifies light illuminating from a video/film production light system of the type that includes a lamp and fixturing to form a light beam about a substantially fixed direction relative to the fixturing. A mounting frame attaches to the fixturing in a substantially rigid manner, and a rod connects to the frame. A disc having a plurality of light modifying sections is constructed and arranged to rotate about the rod and within the beam such that the beam passes through any one of the sections selectively. Each section has an optical element that modifies the beam and, thereby, the light. The invention also provides a production light, including a lamp for projecting light onto a background scene, a reflector for collecting and directing the light toward the scene, light fixturing for housing the lamp and reflector, a dial for housing a plurality of sections, each section having a light modifying element, and an axle mounted with the fixturing.

  • Patent number: 5884016
Abstract: A data visualization arrangement facilitates the display of a selected region of a multi-dimensional data object in a selected one of a plurality of display modes. The arrangement comprises a data object store, an interface, an object region retrieval component and a display. The data object store stores the data object, the data object comprising a plurality of data items in a predetermined organization. The interface receives a region identification for identifying a particular region of the object and a display mode identification. The object region retrieval component retrieves data items from a region of the data object as identified by the region identification received by the interface. Finally, the display receives the data items as retrieved by the object region retrieval mechanism and displays them in the display mode as identified by the display mode identification.

  • Patent number: 5866272
Abstract: The invention provides a hybrid laminate and skin panels of hybrid laminate structure that are suitable for a supersonic civilian aircraft. The hybrid laminates include layups of layers of titanium alloy foil and composite plies, that are optimally oriented to counteract forces encountered in use, that are bonded to a central core structure, such as titanium alloy honeycomb. The reinforcing fibers of the composite plies are selected from carbon and boron, and the fibers are continuous and parallel oriented within each ply. However, some plies may be oriented at angles to other plies. Nevertheless, in a preferred embodiment of the invention, a substantial majority of, or all of, the fibers of the hybrid laminates are oriented in a common direction. The outer surfaces of the laminates include a layer of titanium foil to protect the underlying composite-containing structure from the environment, and attack by solvents, and the like.

  • Patent number: 5865831
Abstract: A laser is used to reopen the natural drainage passageways in the eye or to form new passageways to enable the drainage of the aqueous humor from the eye. In one procedure, an Er:YAG laser is used to ablate occluding tissue in Schlemm's canal. In another procedure, the Er:YAG laser is used to open occluded openings in the ciliary body. In yet another procedure, the Er:YAG laser is used to form a new passageway comprising a plurality of interconnected passageway segments from the exterior of the eye through the sclera to the anterior chamber to enable the drainage of the aqueous humor.

  • Patent number: 5857694
Abstract: A sports implement including an electroactive element, such as a piezoceramic sheet attached to the implement and a circuit attached to the electroactive element. The circuit may be a shunt, or may include processing such as amplification and phase control to apply a driving signal which may compensate for strain sensed in the implement, or may simply alter the stiffness to affect performance. In a ski, the electroactive element is located near to the root in a region of high strain to apply damping, and the element captures between about one and five percent of the strain energy of the ski. The region of high strain may be found by modeling mechanics of the sports implement, or may be located by empirically mapping the strain distribution which occurs during use of the implement. In other embodiments, the electroactive elements may remove resonances, adapt performance to different situations, or enhance handling or comfort of the implement.

  • Patent number: 5849172
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus is provided for the production of copper using a solvent extraction electrowinning process. Process streams formed during the process containing entrained liquids are fed to a cyclone to remove either organic extractant or water (aqueous solutions) from the stream. A raffinate stream fed to a cyclone removes entrained organic phase which organic phase may be recycled to the process. The separated raffinate stream would then typically be recycled to the copper ore leach step to form a pregnant leach solution without the loss of organic solvent and/or the environmental concerns associated with entrained solvent. In a preferred new process, mixers, preferably inline, are used in conjunction with cyclones to provide a solvent extraction electrowinning process which is continuous and efficient and the use of conventional mixers, and particularly settlers, are eliminated.

  • Patent number: RE36417
Abstract: A probabilistic method of detecting viral intrusion into an original computer file is disclosed. In the method, a protection file is first created. In the preferred embodiment, the protection files is created by generating a test string. The test string is compared to the original computer file and is discarded in the event of a match. The test string is kept in the event of a non-match. The protection file is created by storing a plurality of non-matching test strings. In the detection stage, the file to be screened for possible viral infection is compared to each of the test strings of the protection file. The computer file being screened is determined to be probabilistically free of a viral infection if all of the test strings in the protection file do not match the file being screened. However, in the event of a match between a test string and the file being screened, then a change in the file being screened is detected.
