  • Patent number: 5733288
Abstract: The present invention is a surgical bone brush which provides a means to remove soft tissue from harvested autogenous and allografts bone prior to implantation of the bone into the human body. The invention is a surgical instrument with multiple fibers of surgical grade stainless steel or implantable material, wherein the fibers are held in place around a retaining ring, by a cap assembly, and extend outward forming a brush. The bone brush head, provided in a plurality of sizes and shapes, is attached at one end of a shaft, of a length and diameter providing for the insertion of the shaft into surgical grade rotary hand pieces. The bone brush provides a means to remove soft tissue from bone, decorticate, and contour bone. This is achieved when the shaft of the bone brush is inserted into a surgical rotary hand piece and the hand piece is activated thereby causing the brush head to rotate.

  • Patent number: 5729191
Abstract: A vehicle security system includes a controller for performing a function responsive to receipt of a corresponding command signal, and a remote transmitter for sending a command signal from a plurality of banks of command signals. More particularly, the remote transmitter includes a plurality of first momentary contact switches for transmitting a first respective command signal responsive to depressing the switch for less than a first time and for transmitting a second respective command signal responsive to depressing the switch for more than the first time. The remote transmitter also includes a bank selector switch for selecting one of the plurality of banks of command signals. A valet switch is included for placing the controller in a valet mode, such as to permit a service technician or valet to use the vehicle without triggering an alarm.

  • Patent number: 5725906
Abstract: A polymer concrete pipe liner is formed from a fluidized, but substantially waterless cement containing mixture applied to the pipe interior. The mixture contains inorganic cement particles, a liquid styrene mixture and one or more poly-olefinically unsaturated co-monomers in a greater amount than the styrene. The mixture substantially excludes acrylonitrile and acrylamide. The co-monomers are preferably selected from a group including trimethylolpropane-trimethacrylate, trimethylolpropane-methacrylate, divinyl benzene, and hexadiene. Mixing liquid and solid aggregate components forms a slurry which is transferred to a pipe interior and centrifugally cast to form the liner. The composition avoids the need for high temperature curing the toxic reactive unsaturates to co-polymerize and cross-link polystyrene.

  • Patent number: 5718896
Abstract: Methods and compositions for the prophylaxis and/or treatment of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are disclosed, in which amounts of a haloperoxidase, such as myeloperoxidase or eosinophil peroxidase, and a semen substrate-specific oxidase are administered to a human or animal subject in the environment of sexually transmitted fluids. In the presence of semen, the semen substrate-specific oxidase catalyzes the production of hydrogen peroxide, which in turn is utilized by the haloperoxidase to selectively inhibit pathogenic microbes present in the sexually transmitted fluids. At high concentration levels, the compositions additionally exhibit spermicidal properties.

  • Patent number: 5704041
Abstract: In an Open System Interconnection (OSI) environment, an agent Common Management Information Protocol (CMIP) platform maintains an up to date tree of all of the Managed Object Instances (MOIs), in order to perform scoping functions. The agent platform receives a message from an OSI manager which includes a base MOI and levels below the base MOI to receive the message. The agent platform recurses through the tree below the base MOI to determine which MOIs should receive the message. If the message is delete, the children of MOIs to be deleted are also deleted. The children of undeletable MOIs are not deleted. A current, accurate tree is maintained by the agent platform, which can register a new MOI in the tree when a valid request is received from the MOI or the manager. The agent platform can also deregister an MOI upon valid request from the agent associated with the platform.

  • Patent number: 5663704
Abstract: A vehicle security system includes a vehicle sensor, an alarm indicator, and a controller operatively connected to the vehicle sensor and alarm indicator. The controller includes a remote panic lock control feature for moving one or all of the vehicle door locks to the unlocked position and generating an alarm responsive to receipt of a remote panic signal from a remote transmitter and when the controller is in the armed mode. Accordingly, an owner returning to his vehicle may press the panic button on his handheld remote transmitter thereby causing the alarm to sound and the driver's door or all the doors to be unlocked to permit entry of the owner into the relative safety of his vehicle. The controller also preferably moves an unlocked vehicle door lock to the locked position a first time after receipt of the remote panic signal, such as in the event of an inadvertent pressing of the remote panic switch.

  • Patent number: 5658335
Abstract: An adjustable spinal fixator for insertion between adjacent vertebrae comprises a contoured housing defining convex edges to fit within the concavity of the vertebral body. An externally threaded core extends through the housing, and a pair of internally threaded nut assemblies attach to the core member. Four crown members with teeth are separately mounted within the housing and retract and variably extend with the movement of the movable nuts on the core member. Two of the crown members extend and retract from the top of the housing, and the remaining two crown members extend and retract from the bottom of the housing. The spinal fixator is positioned between adjacent vertebrae with the crown members retracted so that the teeth are below the convex edges of the housing. Following placement, the crown members are extended outwardly from the top and bottom of the housing by rotation of the core member which causes the teeth to penetrate the bone at an angle to secure the spinal fixator in position.

  • Patent number: 5654688
Abstract: A vehicle security system includes a controller for permitting addition of a coded remote transmitter capable of switching the controller from an armed mode to a disarmed mode, and generates a signal based upon a number of coded remote transmitters capable of switching the controller to the disarmed mode. The remote transmitter verification is preferably communicated to the user by flashing a dashboard mounted light a number of times corresponding to the number of coded remote transmitters responsive to turning vehicle ignition to the on position, and when the controller is in the disarmed mode. Accordingly, the user is ensured that only the coded transmitters under his control may operate the vehicle security system. The controller may also enter the disarmed mode responsive to receiving a predetermined coded signal from a remote transmitter, and generate an alarm based upon receipt of a coded signal other than the predetermined coded signal from the remote transmitter.

  • Patent number: 5642654
Abstract: This invention relates to a piston and a method of manufacturing the same. The piston includes a substantially cylindrical member having a first end and a second end. The cylindrical member includes an open cavity extending axially from the second end to adjacent the first end such that the second end has an inner annular surface defined by an inner diameter. The piston further includes a disk having a radially outer surface defined by an outer diameter fixedly secured to the second end of the cylindrical member. The outer diameter of the disk is substantially equal to the inner diameter of the inner annular surface of the second end of the cylindrical member. A circumferentially extending recessed area for receiving particles produced while fixedly securing the disk to the second end of the cylindrical member is provided on either the radially outer surface of the disk or the inner annular surface of the second end of the cylindrical member.
