  • Patent number: 5119226
Abstract: The present invention is for a radiation transmitter which transmits radiation to an illumination spot for forming reflected radiation. The transmitter includes a plurality of radiation transmission sources. Each of the sources transmits to a portion of the illumination spot. The transmitter includes means for alternately activating a portion of the transmission sources to illuminate a portion of the illumination spot for aligning a radiation receiver to receive the reflected radiation. Each resident of network transmits in turn its address and the address of each resident that it recognizes. Once a prospective resident can recognize each resident of the network it announces that it is joining the network and states its new address and the address of each resident it can see. Every resident then amends its list of recognized residents to include the new member.

  • Patent number: 5091699
Abstract: A frequency division network is disclosed in which a sinusoidal signal is converted to a digital format for frequency division and then converted back to the sinusoidal format, the sinusoidal output waveform having low phase noise. In a preferred embodiment the frequency conversion takes place in an m-fold plurality of edge triggered flip-flops, connected to divide by two, and clocked by the sinusoidal waveform. Each flip-flop is subject to jitter causing phase noise, which is minimized when the output of two sets of four flip-flops are averaged, and then filtered to obtain the sinusoidal fundamental. When a crystal filter having a very narrow pass band is employed, the phase noise is further reduced. The frequency division network uses low cost components and the phase noise of the output waveform approaches that of a stable crystal oscillator.

  • Patent number: 5073258
Abstract: An apparatus and method for skimming contaminants from a reservoir of a liquid such as an industrial solvent, including a tubular wand having an end inlet extending into the reservoir, a pressure air line extending along the wand, the air line protruding a side wall of the wand and terminating at a nozzle proximate the inlet, the nozzle being directed into the wand, away from the inlet for producing a vacuum. The wand is adjustably mounted to a base that attaches to the reservoir, and is connected to a vented container for collecting the contaminants that are drawn into the wand. • Patent number: 5072388
Abstract: A log analysis method can be used to determine a relative condition of a lined casing within a geothermal well from logged instrument data. Uncertain conditions, such as an unknown scale layer thickness, may perturb the indicators of a casing condition within the logged signals. The method can be used to detect the perturbed signals, discern a perturbed reference interfacial indicator in the data, searches for an adjacent interfacial indicator within a window, and axially aligns the adjacent indicator by shifting the data signal towards the reference indicator. The baseline indicator may be an arbitrarily selected signal indicator or a prior (non-scaled/non-eroded) condition indicator. A prior condition indicator can also be used to determine a second window for detecting an adjacent surface signal indicators.

  • Patent number: 5069485
Abstract: One or more rigid sealing segments are attached to pipe end sections and the assembly lined to form a fluid-resistant joint. A segment surface forms the primary sealing interface of lined pipe sections without the need for a conventional removable liner edge seal. The lining process and configuration sealably bonds the liner to the fluid-resistant sealing segment and to the non-fluid-resistant pipe. The manner of bonding both avoids (or limits) liner stress and covers the non-fluid-resistant material of the pipe. In an alternative embodiment, the sealing segments are engaged at mating threaded surfaces, the mated threads providing a single primary sealing and engagement interface. Redundant liner end sealing may also be accomplished by a sandwiched deformable material if added reliability of sealing harsh fluids is desired. In another embodiment, portions of the rigid sealing segments are slidably mounted relative to each other and the primary seal interface is temperature actuated.

  • Patent number: 5009413
Abstract: A tube with a restricted end is used to produce a spray of water by manually forcing the non-restricted end of the tube into a body of water. The resulting spray comes out of the restricted end of the tube. Thus, the spray is not in line with the direction of force needed to achieve the spraying action. The tube and restriction combination provides a device that can be used for aquatic amusements, exercise, etc., in an inherently safe manner.

  • Patent number: 4977618
Abstract: The present invention is an apparatus for wireless communications of information between two locations. A transmitter means modulates the information into infrared radiation at a first location. The infrared radiation is transmitted by the transmitter to a reflecting surface along a straight line path which is transparent to the infrared radiation. The infrared radiation is reflected at the reflecting surface forming reflected infrared radiation. A receiver means for receiving the reflected infrared radiation from the reflecting surface is positioned at a second location. The second location and the reflecting surface have a straight line path therebetween which is transparent to the infrared radiation.
