  • Patent number: 4764278
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing the concentration of haloorganic compounds in water-contaminated with haloorganic compounds is disclosed. The haloorganic compounds are extracted from the water and concentrated into certain water immiscible alkane hydrocarbon solvent. The solvent is separated from the water, is regenerated by ultraviolet radiation to degrade the haloorganics, and is recirculated to contact additional contaminated water. After extraction the water separated from the solvent may be subjected to conventional drinking water treatment, or passed to groundwater.

  • Patent number: 4544541
Abstract: A process is provided for removing hexavalent selenium from an acidic sulfate solution containing at least one metal ion from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt and copper at ambient pressure and at a temperature not exceeding the boiling point of the solution. The solution is treated with an agent from the group consisting of a compound which will produce nascent hydrogen in the solution and finely divided metal from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt and copper resulting from in situ precipitation of the metal in the acid sulfate solution. Thus, following treatment with the compound, the hexavalent selenium is reduced to a form separable from the solution by solid-liquid separation.

  • Patent number: 4424888
Abstract: In a shoe and drum brake wherein the shoes can move circumferentially of the drum between first and second limit positions and are biased towards the first limit positions, there is provided for transmitting force from an actuator to the shoes a lever or hydraulic device capable of transmitting the force unequally to the shoes. The larger force urges the shoes towards their second limit positions while the smaller force urges the shoes towards their first limit positions. During forward rotation of the drum, the shoes remain in their first limit positions and can be applied radially to the drum by movement of the actuator. When the drum is rotating in the reverse direction, the larger force moves the shoes circumferentially of the drum so that the actuator fails to apply the shoes to the drum and establish a braking torque.

  • Patent number: 4343610
Abstract: A motion system is provided by a platform generally parallel to a base and connected thereto by a column and powered and controlled extensible members, at least three of which are connected between distributed points around the column. In a three degree of freedom device, the column is conical, rigidly supported at its base with a universal joint at its top. The points of attachment define triangles in the base and in the platform surrounding the column with one extensible member connected between each.In the four degree of freedom version, the column is modified by making it effectively a column which is pivoted or guided at the base or contains an extensible member, preferably retains its triangular shape and its universal joint connection to the platform at its apex. For stability four powered and controlled extensible members are provided between points in the base and platform distributed around the column, a preferred pattern of arrangement being a square with the column at the center.

  • Patent number: 4100043
Abstract: A method is provided for leaching comminuted nickeliferous sulfide matte containing by weight about 20 to 75% nickel, about 5 to 50% copper, non-stoichiometric sulfur in the range of over 4 to about 24%, over 0.5 to about 20% iron, the sum of the nickel, copper and sulfur contents being at least about 80% of the matte composition, with the balance gangue or slag and incidental impurities.Nickel is selectively leached from the comminuted matte using sulfuric acid or spent copper electrolyte solution at substantially atmospheric pressure while vigorously aerating the solution, wherein the pH is raised sufficiently to produce a nickel solution with an iron content of less than about 10 ppm and a copper content of over 5 ppm, the copper being thereafter selectively removed from the nickel solution by passing the solution through an ion-exchange resin selective to the absorption of copper.

  • Patent number: 4044096
Abstract: The leaching efficiency of nickeliferous lateritic ore is optimized by scalping the ore to remove a coarse low-nickel fraction and provide a fine nickel-rich fraction which is then high pressure leached in a sulfuric acid solution by controlling the parameters temperature, pulp density, the rate of acid addition, leaching time, agitation rate, etc., whereby a pregnant solution is obtained with the nickel to (Fe+Al+Cr) ratio exceeding about 2.

  • Patent number: 3991159
Abstract: The pregnant solution obtained from high pressure and high temperature leaching of nickel-cobalt bearing low magnesium oxidic ores is neutralized at high temperature and pressure by coordinating the leaching of the low magnesium ores with the leaching of nickel-cobalt bearing high magnesium ores, the leach slurry from said low magnesium ore being neutralized by mixing it with said high magnesium ore which is simultaneously leached with said solution to produce a final pregnant solution from which metal values are subsequently recovered.

  • Patent number: RE31100
Abstract: A drum brake, primarily for a trailer, which gives normal braking torque in forward direction and low torque in reverse. This is achieved by having a pivoted lever acting between the one ends of two shoes remote from the ends between which the brake actuator is located. The shoes act on the lever at different effective radii and the forces applied by the shoes to the lever hold it in a first position during forward rotation, thus allowing normal braking torque, and a second position during reverse rotation which allows the ends of the shoes acted on by the actuator to move apart thus allowing a limitation of the reverse braking torque by limiting the stroke of the actuator.
