  • Patent number: 6834134
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for generating short (e.g., picosecond) pulses using a 2 section 1553 nm DBR laser without gain switching nor external modulation. The center wavelength of the DBR section is modulated at 0.5 GHz to generate a constant amplitude frequency modulated optical wave Large group velocity dispersion is then applied with a chirped fiber Bragg grating to convert the FM signal to a pulse stream.

  • Publication number: 20040230778
Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that performs register file checkpointing to support speculative execution within a processor. During operation, the system commences speculative execution of a program from a point of speculation, at which the outcome of a long latency instruction is speculatively predicted. During this speculative execution, registers are updated by checkpointing an old value of the register, if the register has not already been checkpointed, and then updating the architectural state of the register with the new value. In this way, only registers that are updated during the speculative execution are checkpointed, instead of checkpointing all of the architectural registers prior to commencing speculative execution.

  • Patent number: 6763418
Abstract: A method and system to arbitrate requests of a plurality of ports of an interconnect device are provided. Every port receives combined pending request data that includes a pending request indicator associated with each of the plurality of ports. Each pending request indicator specifies whether a corresponding port has a pending request that needs to be submitted to a request bus of the interconnect device. Further, at each port, a turn to submit a request to the request bus is allocated to one of the plurality of ports based on the combined pending request data, a set of values stored in a mask register and a priority scheme associated with the plurality of ports.

  • Publication number: 20040133766
Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that dynamically allocates physical registers in a windowed processor architecture. The system includes a physical register file and a register map that maps architectural registers defined within an executing program to physical registers within the physical register file. The system also includes a window allocation mechanism that allocates a new name space for a register window without allocating physical registers for the register window, thereby allowing the physical registers to be dynamically allocated as needed instead of being allocated at window initialization time.

  • Patent number: 6648966
Abstract: A method for making a free-standing, single crystal, gallium nitride (GaN) wafer includes forming a single crystal GaN layer directly on a single crystal LiAlO2 substrate using a gallium halide reactant gas, and removing the single crystal LiAlO2 substrate from the single crystal GaN layer to make the free-standing, single crystal GaN wafer. Forming the single crystal GaN layer may comprise depositing GaN by vapor phase epitaxy (VPE) using the gallium halide reactant gas and a nitrogen-containing reactant gas. Because gallium halide is used as a reactant gas rather than a metal organic reactant such as trimethygallium (TMG), the growth of the GaN layer can be performed using VPE which provides commercially acceptable rapid growth rates. In addition, the GaN layer is also devoid of carbon throughout. Because the GaN layer produced is high quality single crystal, it may have a defect density of less than about 107 cm−2.

  • Publication number: 20030202798
Abstract: A parallel monitored and controlled optical PMD compensator comprises a branch optical signal split from an optical signal path. A polarization controller (PC) and differential group delay are disposed in each of the paths. A controller adjusts polarization compensation of the PCs in response to PMD dispersion of the branch optical signal. A PMD monitor is preferably disposed in the branch path providing a monitor signal to the controller for use in adjusting the PCs. A polarization rotator may inject a reference signal into the paths with the PC disposed in the branch path acting as a polarization scrambler. A state of polarization (SOP) of the reference signal may be monitored by polarimeters disposed in both paths and the SOP of the reference signal in the branch path may be provided to the controller for adjusting polarization compensation of the inline PC.

  • Patent number: 6574772
Abstract: A communication system employing Reed-Solomon error-correction coding which comprises an encoder (12) and a decoder (22). Either the encoder or decoder may be compatible with a first field polynomial selected to reduce the number of logic gates in the encoder or decoder. Before decoding, a converter (20) converts the code from a form compatible with a first field polynomial to another form compatible with a second field polynomial.
